Review: Mercenaries Part II (Special Forces #3) by Marquesate, Vashtan, Aleksandr Voinov

4 Stars

This review is harder for me to write, though I did love the book, telling with giving it four stars and all. It was like the first two books in the Special Forces series with violence, lust, anger, ect. One thing I do feel is that in this book we got something of Dan back.

Dan McFadyen the SAS soldier I fell in love with in Soldiers, the brutal, strong, witty, beautifully harsh one, not "Mad Dog" from Mercenaries Part I.

In this third book of the Special Forces series we see Dan, ex- SAS soldier and Vadim, ex- Spetsnaz soldier in the horrible war in Balkans.

But First we see them planing the trip for R&R. This was very important to the book I think, and though we do get some pretty big revelations on into the book I feel it was here that we see the underling of it. If you read the ones before then you know they are going to go to Jean's wedding, with Dan being the best man, until then they plan to travel around. And the first place they plan to start with is Dan's family, which he hasn't seen in five years.
While talking about this Dan finds out that Vadim doesn't want his family to know they are partners. This didn't sit well with Dan and well eventually his brother and he have a heart to heart, but I think right there in this was a telling sign of what to expect through the book. Especially when we see how Vadim's past is still controlling the today.

When they finally do get to Balkans, the war is more than what they thought, being more of a slaughter from the other side, with them not being told to do anything about it. It is here that we have the dramatic scene when old secrets come into the light.

Now in this one we do get to see something of Vadim's past, I liked that. But also we see how the relationship with Dan and Vadim is under duress strain with the revelations of the past to the conflicted emotions of today. Even with the underling love they have for each other, this installment was another tidal wave of emotion and violence.

Again I did love the book, but I also saw all the problems as well with their relationship as well as ones to come, which I hope will be cleared up in the next book Veterans.
