Review: Veterans (Special Forces #4) by Marquesate, Aleksandr Voinov, Vashtan

4 Stars

As I said with the first book, I love the cover, on all of these books. I am curious where they came from, was the picture's took for the purpose of being used as the covers for this series or just went well with them? Either way I love them. (Had to say this, now onto the review!)

Veterans is the fourth and last installment of the Special Forces series, the end of Dan's and Vadim's epic 25-year story. It was an emotional journey though their lives and I feel a rending in my heart at saying good-bye.

I loved this one even though it didn't quite live up to what I thought it would be. There were times when it would hit a height, and I thought "Okay this is it, now we're going." and I thought it would start to get into the same depth and intensity as the first books, but it never really did. I mean it was really good but I felt this book was more of closing all the loose ends. It was more calm, sexually, emotionally, and graphically than the first books. I was really sad that I didn't see any of that sexual flair from the other books, that was a little of a disappointment to what I was expecting, especially when there was a almost intense scene at one point but it never really got back to that. Though I wouldn't count this against the book, I don't think, as Dan and Vadim was going into a more mature stage in their life's at this point.

I am sad to be finished with this book though in a way happy that I saw it though to the end. I loved Dan and Vadim but I think Dan kind of lost something with the whole "Mad Dog" thing, though we did get some of him back in this installment, a more mature and mellowed him but more of the Dan I knew and loved from the first book. Vadim, I think, gained something good in this one as well, in the acceptance he finally achieved with himself about the past.

Veterans to me lacked in its intensity, it really was more calm, than the others, there was no physical war to be fought in this one, and that was good to see them together without the war in the front anymore, to be able to see "just them". I loved how it ended and I think it will be something that stays with me for a very long time, the whole series.

I do think I would like to go back soon and read the edited version of Soldiers though, to see if its any different.
