Review: Paradise Island by J.L. Manning

2 Stars
Author: J.L. Manning
Pages: 214
In this novel we meet Josh and Anna Micmilon who have just won an island in a contest. With their neighbors and friends; Fill, Amy, Mark, Kim  and John a contractor who knows them, they get together to go check out the island.

Upon arriving they all have grand ideas and leave John to get to work on the island. But John soon finds that finding workers for the island is tricky as the workers say they experience strange things on the island. Eventually though, with the help of a certain fruit that grows on the island, they get the work done and ready for the return of John's friends. John even manages to score two full-time workers for the island Laura and Adam. But soon it is not only the workers that is experiencing strange things but everyone on the island.

This book in my opinion was okay. Mostly it was little things about it that bothered me. One is there doesn't seem to be a passage of time, and while I know that weeks were passing because weekends are mentioned a couple of times but other than that I don't really have a passage of time. If that makes sense.

Another thing was Amy, I built an intense dislike for her. From the very beginning she just seemed snobbish, whinny and lazy. I know the island was meant to be for relaxing but it seems she should have helped out and contributed to the island more.

The way the book ended was slightly..abrupt to me. Though truthfully I do guess as endings went it was an okay one because you could draw most of your own conclusions from what you knew. But to me, I didn't like it, I think there could have been more detail of what was going to happen after the events that went on and a more solid closing.

I do have to say though the concept of the book really did, and still does, appeal to me as I think it will others. A paradise island where you can go relax away from the world, and the "strange things" that was going on sounded really exciting and interesting to me.

So, though not really my cup of tea, I do think some readers in the fantasy/fiction genre would love this book.

*I received an Ebook copy of this book for free to review from the author.
