Interview and Giveaway with T.R. Mousner!!

T.R. Mousner is the author of the debut novel, Being.

HP: T.R. Mousner, can you tell us a little about yourself?

T.R. Mousner: I fell in love with books as a child and feel incredibly blessed to be able to put my writing skills to good use.

HP: What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?

T.R. Mousner: I have two:  Hate destroys the hater, not the hated --- Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

Do or do not; there is no try – Yoda.  I love these quotes because they resonate with me and I have a special fondness for Jedi Knights.

HP: When and why did you begin writing?

T.R. Mousner: I started writing as a teen, stories featuring my girlfriends and their crushes for entertainment purposes.  This was before the internet, lol.

HP: Your novel Being came came out March 8th 2011 and is available at Amazon Kindle. Can you tell us a little about the novel and the world you have created?

T.R. Mousner: Being is about an extraterrestrial whose ship crashes in California after colliding with space trash orbiting Earth.

But Being is also about family and the connections we share with those we love most.  The story showcases two families, one human and one extraterrestrial. My extraterrestrials are similar to humans in many respects, except they have different philosophies and a different, more peaceful way of being than humans do.

HP: What inspired you to write Being?

T.R. Mousner: Many things. Initially, Being started as my response to the Bush Administration’s antics, but over time it became much bigger. I hoped that by writing this story I could make a difference in the world, by planting seeds in young minds.  Our world can be a different and better place, but it’s on us to make the necessary changes.  People have so much good in them; it only needs to be brought out.  If humans act different and behave better, the world will get better. We can do it; I believe in us.

HP: Who designed the cover?

T.R. Mousner: My award-winning creative director husband deserves most of the credit, but the background photograph is one I took.

HP: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

T.R. Mousner: There’s more than one. I’m concerned about the world children are inheriting.  It’s critical to everyone’s future that we treat each other and the planet with more respect. Our changing climate is evidence that we can’t continue much longer down our current path without suffering terrible consequences.  We must strike a balance before it’s too late.

HP: At the end of Being--which I personally loved--you have left an opening for a second novel. Do you have any current plans for another yet? Or was it just a just in case kind of thing?

T.R. Mousner: Being’s sequel is in the works.  I hope to get a trilogy out of the series, but that depends in part on the characters’ cooperation and they’re a little angry with me right now for neglecting them. Hopefully I can coax them into forgiving me.

HP: Do you think, maybe sometime in the future you will write out of the Young-Adult genre?

T.R. Mousner: I believe that most anything is possible.  Only time will tell.

HP: Can you share a little of your current work with us?

T.R. Mousner: I’m currently working on Being’s sequel and it’s my intention to pick up right where book 1 left off. However, that being said, it’s not entirely up to me but that’s the way it’s looking right now.

HP: Being is a self-published novel. Can you tell us a little about your experience self-punishing? Why did you self-publish, if you don't mind my asking?

T.R. Mousner: I’m so glad you asked this question.  I chose to self-publish Being because my gut demanded I do it, not because I’d exhausted every other option. In fact, I only queried one literary agent before moving forward with self-publishing.

Publishing is in such turmoil currently. I know several writers who’ve received emails from their agents saying they’re leaving the industry, which means my friends have to start all over and find new representation, which is a long and time-intensive process.  Because of the subject matter Being deals with, I felt compelled to get Being out there as time is of the essence.

HP: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

T.R. Mousner: Please be patient while I craft Being’s sequel. While I’m anxious to complete it, art will not be rushed and I’m determined to make book two even better than book one.

HP: What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing this novel?

T.R. Mousner: Besides realizing my dream of being an author (a title I’m extremely proud of) readers really get Being, which thrills me.  Furthermore, for the first time in my career, I truly feel like I’m the master of my own destiny.  It’s a heady feeling.

HP: Thank you for this taking the time to do this interview, T.R. Mousner! :)

T.R. Mousner: Holly, thanks again for accepting Being for review and for everything you’re doing to promote my work!
