Review: Obsidian Butterfly (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #9) by Laurell K. Hamilton

4 Stars
Obsidian Butterfly
Series: Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter
Author: Laurell K. Hamilton
Pages: 596
Read Count: 3
In Laurell K. Hamilton's ninth installment of the Anita Blake series Edward is back and calling in his favor. He needs Anita in Santa Fa to help with an investigation.

Anita, is initially excited about being on Edwards home turf, hoping she might finally learn some of the mystery's about the man. But she never expected the big surprise she gets when she arrives in Santa Fa and finds Edward has a 'someone' named Donna. Now this not only surprised me but made me dislike Donna for no good reason other than I love Edward and wanted rid of her. And really, I did not see how she appealed to him especially with the two kids.

This was a setting I had never imagined Edward in. Edward is cold, ruthless, and nicknamed 'Death'. These things do not scream-- family or love in any way.

But after a while I could see that Edward really did care for them so I read on and began to wonder if the point of this novel was the authors way of saying that Anita and Edward would never get together. If that was it then I can understand that, as I have always had it in my mind that they should get together.

But on to the plot of the book. Edward has called Anita down to Santa Fa to help him as 'Ted Forrester, bounty hunter', with an instigation that has him somewhat stumped. He also has called in two others to help on the case--Olaf and Bernardo.

The bodies of the victims, who have been torn apart and survivors, who have been skinned completely, not only shock her but leads to the same problem Edward and everyone else has, she has no idea what it is.

We meet lots of characters all mostly revolving around this case, which I found very interesting and I thought this book also should us how much Anita has really changed not only in her personality but 'magic' wise as well.

Richard and Jean-Claude are not really in the book, though we do get a lot of mention of them and how she hasn't seen them for a long time. I have to say I did kind of like taking a break from them and getting a book that seems o be more what I thought about Anita in the first couple of books.

As the book progresses we get a lot of tensions, revelations and altogether fast paced suspense ridden plot wondering what will happen.

I would recommend this book to Anita Blake fans.

  1. I love this series and I remember when I got this book - it was just released and I had only recently read the series and was chomping to get the next book. I was rather surprised and I think disappointed that it focused on Edward and the boys were not in it - but I have to say today after reading the series over several times this has become one of my favorites. I am glad we got a better look at Edward and I think it adds a lot to the overall picture of the series as a whole. Thank you for sharing today you did a wonderful review.

  2. Thank you for reading, Denise! :)
