Interview & Giveaway with D.F. Lamont!!

D.F. Lamont is the author of the new YA novel The Jinx! You can read my review of his novel here.

Holly: Hello, D.F. Lamont! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

D.F. Lamont: Sure! I’ve been married to my wife Cecilia for 13 years and we have four kids. The oldest is ten and the youngest is one. I’ve been writing for a long time, and dabbled in some film and commercial production.

I’ve lived in a number of places in CanadaToronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Kingston, but I grew up in Winnipeg, right in the middle of the country. It has a strong arts community – maybe kind of like Austin, Texas – there are filmmakers, bands and writers who have had a national and international impact.

Holly: As a writer, musician, director, designer and owner of Manitoba-based Ad Agency Jetpack Media, you must be a very busy person! Did you set out to be all those things or did they just fall into place over time?

D.F. Lamont: I have a Master’s degree in English Literature, but during University I would try to get bands together, and I started a student newspaper. It was in 1989, right when the desktop publishing revolution started. And that side project turned into my living – writing, designing, being a journalist.

Holly: How did you go from a journalist, editor and speechwriter to writing fiction?

D.F. Lamont: I’ve been trying to write a book, or a story - and see it through to the end – for a while now. I wrote a couple of screenplays, one pretty good, the other not. I wrote some ideas for TV scripts. I had some false starts on stories – five or fifteen pages here or there - or I would sketch out a plot. The hard part was unfolding the whole thing. But I had a couple of communications jobs that required a lot of writing, every day, for press releases, and I would have to write quotes or speeches for several people.

That helped in two ways. First, it gave me the discipline of writing every day. The other is that I would have to figure out what each person’s perspective would be, and try to write sound bites. That helped me when it came to writing for characters.

Holly: When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

D.F. Lamont: I think I’ve wanted to do it for a long time. I read in Esquire one of those ridiculous lists of things to do when you hit 40, and one was “forget about that book you were planning to write,” which made me indignant. That’s not very hard. I spend a lot of time being indignant.

The other is that I had ideas that other people were turning into stories. I had an idea for a story whose working title was “Avatar.”

But the other thing that happened is that when I did PR or advertising, my copy was better than what I was writing about. So I would issue a press release that would get the media interested, and when they showed up they were disappointed. That is the opposite of what you want. You want people to be surprised at how good something is. So I thought “Maybe if my writing is the end product, it will work out.”

Holly: Can you tell us a little bit about your book The Jinx?

D.F. Lamont: It’s a sci-fi fantasy book for kids, aged about 9 – 13. It’s the story of Stephen Allan Grayson, a 13-year-old who finds himself having a string of bad luck so bad he starts to wonder whether he’s cursed, or whether he’s got the powers of a supervillain. He worries he may hurt his family by accident, so he runs away and finds out he’s the target of two groups – a cult obsessed with order, and a bunch of monsters called Chaons.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

D.F. Lamont: The plot. I usually think of stories first, then characters later. It’s an adventure story, so there is lots of action, and I tried to keep the suspense up.

Holly: What was your inspiration?

D.F. Lamont: I had a dream about three years ago where I had Stephen’s exact predicament – bad luck that affected only me, then was like a force field that extended beyond me, and I ran away, only to be faced with bizarre monsters made of boulders, and I used my bad luck to defend myself. When I woke up I jotted down notes, and then fleshed it out into a full story.

Holly: I really like the cover of your book, very eye catching; who designed it if you do not mind me asking?

D.F. Lamont: Thank you! I designed it, actually. It’s a digital illustration of a gadget used by a character in the book. So once kids read the book I hope they turn back to the cover to see what I’m talking about.

Holly: Where can we purchase The Jinx?

D.F. Lamont: It’s available as a softcover on Amazon.com and through the independent bookseller, McNally Robinson. (Mcnallyrobinson.com). You can also buy it as an eBook through Goodreads, iTunes, Amazon, Barnes and Noble for any kind of e-Reader.

You can find links to buy at my website, http://thejinxbook.tumblr.com/

Holly: Is The Jinx the first piece of fiction you have written or just the first novel you have published?

D.F. Lamont: I wrote a comic book a long time ago, but this is my first published work of fiction.

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in the future?

D.F. Lamont: Yes! I have a couple of ideas. It depends how they unfold. Sometimes something will seem like a great idea and it just won’t pan out.

Holly: Are you perhaps working on anything at the moment?

D.F. Lamont: I am – another sci-fi fantasy book for young readers. It will be a little longer than the Jinx, which is a quick read. It’s not a sequel – it will be new characters and a new situation, but I hope it will be thought-provoking and fun.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

D.F. Lamont: I want to say thank you for buying and reading the book! If you find me on Facebook I’m happy to answer any questions.

Holly: Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

D.F. Lamont: I am busy writing, so I am not doing as much reading. The one book I am reading is Panati’s Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Objects, which is a kind of book of lists that has the origin of everything from the toothbrush to fairy tales, to air conditioning. So it has details of how Egyptians made ice in clay trays using evaporation in 3,000 BC, or how Cinderalla was a Chinese folk tale before being collected and re-written by a French author who created many of the Fairy Tales that are classics today.

Holly: Thank you so much for being here today, Dougald!

D.F. Lamont: I appreciate the opportunity!
