Review: Death Masks (The Dresden Files #5) by Jim Butcher

5 Stars
Death Masks
Series: The Dresden Files
Author: Jim Butcher
Mass Market Paperback
Pages: 378
Read Count: 2
Book Description from Goodreads
"Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only practicing professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change. But now he’s getting more than he bargained for.

A duel with the Red Court of Vampires’ champion, who must kill Harry to end the war between vampires and wizards…

Professional hit men using Harry for target practice…

The missing Shroud of Turin…

A handless and headless corpse the Chicago police need identified…

Not to mention the return of Harry’s ex-girlfriend Susan, who’s still struggling with her semivampiric nature. And who seems to have a new man in her life.

Some days, it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed. No matter how much you’re charging."

I really liked this fifth installment of this series. So much so that I really don't want to get to in-depth about it because there is no way I can tell you about this novel without giving away too much about the plot. So I will give you a highlight version.

Harry goes on a TV show--again. Susan Rodriguez  is back in town. Murphy calls Harry to the morgue to take a look at a body. We have Michael and two other Knights of the Cross in this novel and we meet the main bad guys they 'fight' and try to save. Harry gets challenged to a duel by a very well-known vampire to 'end' the war that he started between the Red vampires and the White Council.

Also for those of you who are like me and think he is a great character in this novel--not so nice guy or not---will be glad to know that Gentleman Johnny Marcone is in this novel.

I really like the direction the novels are going in--to me this one just feel like the author is leading up to even more not exactly a filler novel--because you have lots of pertinent plot to the first books in the series but at the same time this kind of feels like the author is pushing off --almost like another 'first book' in the series if that makes sense.

Like the last books this one has mystery, action, some suspense, and more.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who has read the first books in this series and anyone who is looking for a good Urban Fantasy/paranormal read.
