Review: Scary School by Derek The Ghost

4 Stars
Scary School Series: Scary School
Author: Derek The Ghost
Pages: 256
Book Description from Goodreads

"You think your school's scary?
Get a load of these teachers:
Ms. Fang, an 850-year-old vampire
Dr. Dragonbreath, who just might eat you before recess
Mr. Snakeskin—science class is so much more fun when it's taught by someone who's half zombie
Mrs. T—break the rules and spend your detention with a hungry Tyrannosaurus rex!

Gargoyles, goblins, and Frankenstein's monster on the loose The world's most frighteningly delicious school lunch
The narrator's an eleven-year-old ghost!
Join Charles "New Kid" Nukid as he makes some very Scary friends—including Petunia, Johnny, and Peter the Wolf—and figures out that Scary School can be just as funny as it is spooky!"

We really get to learn about a lot of different characters in this novel but our main plot is definitely the up coming Ghoul Games that has been chosen to host at Scary School this year. Which is great plot as Scary School is the only school that takes both humans and monsters.

I have to admit I enjoyed this book, though at the same time think it may be more suited for around the age of 12 and under.

There is talk about children dying at Scary School; the teachers killing them but at the same time no one really 'dies' at Scary School they all come back. It definitely wasn’t 'scary' in any way that I would not want my child to read it.

There are many different characters that go to Scary School which our narrator in the novel, Derek the Ghost focuses on through out the novel, but it’s always clear on which characters he is now focusing on. Nothing that gets confusing over time. Most all the characters 'learn a lesson' in the novel so there is definitely character progression at the end of the novel in my opinion.

I really loved the pictures I admit; I can not recall when the last time I picked up a novel that had pictures in it was; graphic novel not included. The illustrator Scott M. Fischer  does a very good job at matching the descriptions we get in the novel and giving them to us very detailed, I can only imagine that they look even better in the hardcover novel than they did in eBook format.

I have to say that overall I really liked this novel and I was more than impressed with again the authors writing style, you have to be good to keep kids attention and I do believe this will; as well as the illustrations. It was fun, light, made me laugh and an all-around good read that assures I will be picking up the next to hopefully lean more about Derek and find out what happens next at Scary School.

I would recommend this novel to anyone, well I would say up to the age of 12 maybe but then again I enjoyed the read so maybe any one who is looking for something light and elementary/middle-grade.
