Interview & Giveaway with Carrie Pulkinen!

Carrie Pulkinen is author of, Sweet Release, To Catch A Spirit and Her Guardian Lover.

Holly: Hello Carrie and thank you for being here today! :) Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Carrie Pulkinen: I'm a paranormal romance author, mother of two, and a high school teacher all rolled into one. I live in Texas with my kids, my boyfriend, and three dogs. When I'm not reading or writing, you can usually find me peering through the lens of my Canon Rebel T3i.

Holly: I read on your blog that the Twilight Saga actually got you into not only reading but writing as well; how so?

Carrie Pulkinen: As I said in the blog, I was never a reader until I became an adult. The whole Stephenie Meyer story—how she was a stay-at-home mom, etc. and her first book became a best seller—got me thinking…why can't I do that? I'd never given much thought to writing fiction before. But, when my friends and I were at a Twilight Convention, I made up stories (fan fiction, I suppose) to entertain them while we waited in the massive lines.

They were impressed by how I could come up with the stories so easily. I'd been doing it all my life. I thought everyone made up stories in their minds when they didn't have anything to do. Apparently, they don't.

So, when I got home, I decided to give it a try. I started writing and couldn't stop!

Holly: Can you tell us a little about when you first began writing, did you go through a lot of stories before you settled and finished Sweet Release?

Carrie Pulkinen: I wrote a novel and a half before I wrote Sweet Release. I was writing the short story for a class I was taking, and lucked out when I discovered it was a perfect fit for the Breathless Press Halloween collection that year.

Holly: What was your inspiration for Sweet Release?

Carrie Pulkinen: I've always thought that being an EMT is one of the sexiest professions. So, I wanted the main character to have that occupation. The rest of it came to me one day when I was filling in for another teacher at work. The kids were taking a test when the story started flowing. I wrote it all down on the back of an exam and started typing it as soon as I got home.

Holly: Your second novel, which I reviewed here, To Catch a Spirit; can you tell us a little bit about the plot in this novel?

Carrie Pulkinen: A psychic who's afraid of ghosts and a millionaire with a haunted past and a hidden power find that only love can catch a spirit.

Psychic Allison Gray has a soft spot for Logan Mitchell, even though she's never met him. All it takes is one encounter for the millionaire's true emotions to slip through Allison's shields, and she is intrigued. He needs her help, but Allison soon discovers that the kind of help Logan needs is the kind she isn't willing to give. Logan has a ghost, and Allison doesn't work with spirits anymore.

But the ghost is the least of Logan's problems. Born an empath, Logan is constantly barraged with human emotions. And while his talent has come in handy in the business world, it's about to drive him insane. Literally. Logan has OCD, and his ability triggers unbearable attacks that have him counting and cleaning until he collapses from exhaustion.

Sex and money. That's all anyone wants from him. Even worse, he's plagued with recurring visions of his future wife's death, so Logan has spent his entire life avoiding love. He's given up hope of ever having a normal life, until he meets Allison. She's everything he's ever dreamed of, and now he has to decide if loving her is worth risking her life.

If she'll even have him. Allison's lost too much already - her mother to cancer, her father to suicide. But, Logan is so charming and so real, she can't help but fall for him. Now she has to overcome her fear of commitment...and ghosts...or face spending the rest of her life alone.

Holly: How did you create the characters from this novel?

Carrie Pulkinen: I wish I could tell you! The characters created themselves in this one. I found out more about them as I wrote the book.

Holly: Your newest novel, Her Guardian Lover which I loved, came out just this year. For those who have not picked this up yet can you tell us a little about it?

Carrie Pulkinen: April May Carter, a twenty-nine-year-old small town high school teacher, dreams of finding a man to whisk her away from the hickville she’s stuck in. She wants it all—the husband, the house, the kids, the car. But her dreams of living the perfect life are shattered during a school shooting.

Damian is supposed to keep her safe. But a tragic event in his past has left him so bitter and resentful, he's blindsided by the angelic beauty who's awakened a part of his soul he thought had burned out long ago. He won’t let anyone get close enough to care about him. April should hate him. But she sees through his abrasive exterior and finds the compassionate, loving man beneath. Can Damian let go of his past, accept his responsibilities, and let her love him? Or will he spend the rest of his existence alone and miserable?

Holly: How did you come up with the idea for the world you have created in this novel?

Carrie Pulkinen: I wanted to design a perfect world full of imperfect beings. Anything can be created in this word with a simple thought. It's lush, beautiful, and peaceful—a stark contrast to Damian, who can't seem to control his anger.

Holly: Can we expect any more works from you this coming year?

Carrie Pulkinen:  To Catch a Spirit will be available in print for the first time in late March!

Holly: Are you perhaps working on anything at the moment?

Carrie Pulkinen: I've got two things in the works right now. Hopefully I can get one ready to publish by the end of 2012.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Carrie Pulkinen: Thank you for reading my books. You are helping make my dream of being a full-time author come true.

Holly: If you could say something to Stephenie Meyer; what would it be?

Carrie Pulkinen: What wouldn't I say? Her books have touched so many people's lives. She changed mine forever. I would want to thank her for opening me up to discovering my potential and my passion.

I love anything and everything paranormal. I grew up next door to a cemetery. What more can I say?
