A Writer's Resolutions by Sandy Williams

Fireworks by bayasaa2011 has certainly been an interesting year. I’m not quite sure what is going to stand out the most for me: the pregnancy from hell, the birth of my twins, or the release of my first book. Honestly, the whole year has been one big blur. It didn’t go quite the way I planned (due to the hellish pregnancy), so in 2012, I’m going to start anew. I don’t usually make New Year’s Resolutions. They never seem to last for others, so I always doubted they’d last for me. I’m making an exception this year, though, because I need a list of resolutions to keep me focused.

1. Read more! I just checked my Goodreads account, and I only read twelve books this year. Twelve! That’s a ridiculously small number. I usually average around 50 books a year – not a huge number for some readers, but for me, it’s a nice, comfy pace. Now that I’m a full-time writer and full-time mom, though, I need to set a realistic expectation. I’m going to aim for 25 books this year. Hopefully, I’ll beat that number!

2. Write two books! I’ve written four complete books in the last few years. Each one took me a year to write from start to finish (I’m not including edits on The Shadow Reader or its sequel, The Shattered Dark). I really want to write more than that. I’ll be finishing up the edits on The Shattered Dark in January/February, and after that, I’ll be writing a third book *crosses fingers* in The Shadow Reader series, but I hope to write something unrelated this year as well. Maybe that sci-fi romance that’s always screaming for my attention!

3. Blog more! Back when I started writing, I blogged almost daily. It was fun! And I met writers and readers and all sorts of fun people. But during the blur that was the year 2011, I barely blogged at all. My brain was mush during my entire pregnancy, and afterwards…? Well, two babies take up quite a bit of time. I wouldn’t say it’s twice as much work as one baby, but I’ve had very little free time to spend on blogging. That’s going to change in 2012. The babies are (mostly) sleeping through the night, so I can stay up later and get up earlier to accomplish my goals.

4. Go to a big conference! I haven’t decided if that big conference is going to be Romantic Times or the RWA Conference, but I would love to go to either one. I had a good reason (er, two good reasons) for not going to a con this year, but a little part of me has been putting it off because I get so nervous around real authors (The whole published book thing still seems like a dream). I’m going to suck it up and go this time, and I’m going to have fun and be social!

5. Update my website! Over the summer, I had Croco Designs create this gorgeous website for me, but I haven’t updated it (other than the occasional blog) or done half the things I planned to do with it. I want to update it every quarter with appearances, a list of guest blogs, helpful links, etc. If you want to see how long I keep these resolutions, you can stop by my blog. If you do, please say “hi”! Are any of you making resolutions this year? If so, what are they?

Sandy graduated from Texas A&M University with a double major in political science and history. She thought about attending law school. Fortunately, before handing over her life’s savings, she realized case studies weren’t nearly as interesting as novels and decided to get an MA in Library Science instead. She worked as a librarian until her husband whisked her off to London on an extended business trip. She’s now back home in Texas, writing full-time, raising newborn twin boys, and squeezing in time to play geeky board and card games like Settlers of Catan, Dominion, and Runebound.

She loves hanging out with other readers and talking about books. For recommendations, check out her Goodreads account. And if you have a favorite book or author, she’d love to hear from you on Facebook, Twitter, or via email.

  1. Write more is definitely on my list of resolutions. I have one book that needs to be revised/polished, and another that need to be plotted/written. Hoping I can up my productivity in 2012!

  2. Sandy,
    Interesting post. Wow...what a year you've had!
hey, if you need any guest bloggers for your blog this year I have 13 backstory essays on the origins of most of my past books you can have if to run you'd like. rdgriff@htc.net Oh, and as a writer now for over 40 years I've been where you've been as well, starting out, a fledling, a professional and now an old timer...and let me tell you this...writers (famous and not so famous) are all mostly alike, I've found. We're sort of clones of each other. Just people. Grin. Keep writing...author of 14 published novels and 8 short stories and 2012 EPIC EBOOK AWARDS FINALIST NOMINEE for her romantic end-of-the-world horror novel THE LAST VAMPIRE-Revised Author's Edition, Kathryn Meyer Griffith rdgriff@htc.net www.myspace.com./kathrynmeyergriffith www.authorsden.com/kathrynmeyergriffith

  3. Hmm. I already replied here once before, but it doesn't look like it took.

    One more try!

@Amanda Maybe we can keep each other accountable on the word counts this year!

@sashagirl I keep trying to remind myself that we're all just people, but other writers seem to have everything way more together than I do! :-)
