Interview & Giveaway with Kirsten Weiss!

Please help me welcome Kirsten Weiss, author of The Metaphysical Detective!

Holly: Hi Kirsten! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Kirsten Weiss: I spent over fourteen years working overseas in the microcredit industry, making very small loans to people with tiny businesses to help those businesses grow.  It was fun and rewarding, and there are probably some mystery novels in that experience, especially since life in third world countries can often be quite lawless.

Holly: How did your interest in writing begin?

Kirsten Weiss: Like so many other mystery writers, it started with Nancy Drew.  I started reading Nancy Drew novels when I was five and decided I wanted to be a girl detective too.  At some point, I realized that wasn’t going to happen, and the next best thing seemed like writing mysteries.  I also remember winning a writing contest in kindergarten, which probably helped spark my youthful ambitions.

Holly: Can you tell us about your novel, The Metaphysical Detective?

Kirsten Weiss: It’s a paranormal mystery based in the San Francisco Bay Area, featuring a tough, no-nonsense metaphysical detective, Riga Hayworth.  At heart, she’s trying to understand why her life has been so odd.  Her parents named her after Rita Hayworth, and she grew up to look just like Rita.  Streetlights go off when she gets close to them.  And she can see ghosts.  The story opens with a new client, who’s convinced her husband is trying to kill her.  The catch is, her husband has been dead nearly a year.  Riga is skeptical – is the client insane?  Is someone else trying to kill her?  But then her client dies and she feels honor bound to bring the culprit to justice.

Holly: Where did you get the idea for this book?

Kirsten Weiss: I was driving down the road on an eerie sort of day - grey and raining hard - and the giant eucalyptus trees lining the road seemed like sentinels from an ancient time. The idea of a metaphysical detective popped into my head and I started plotting what that person’s name would be, what she would do, what her office would look like. Riga
Hayworth was born!

Holly: What traits and other tidbits do you share with your main character?

Kirsten Weiss: I wish we shared more – she’s a lot more direct and self-sufficient than I am. She’s got a strong moral code and she really doesn’t care what people think of her, which I aspire to. Like me, Riga also worked in Afghanistan. On a more superficial level, we both practice Hapkido and Tai Chi (she’s better), and both enjoy a good wine.

Holly: Did any of your inspiration for this book originate in your real life experiences?

Kirsten Weiss: A lot of it came through my experiences working in the third world. While I was overseas, I had a lot of time on my hands (no TV), and in my off hours was able to pursue my interests in local mythology and mysticism, as well as an interest in Tarot.
Those experiences with Shamanism, mythology, and modern magick come through in the book.

Holly: Do you have another project in the works? If so, what is it?

Kirsten Weiss: I’m currently editing the sequel, The Alchemical Detective. I hope this isn’t a spoiler for The Metaphysical Detective, but at the end, Riga goes through an upheaval which affects her magic. In the sequel, she has to deal with that loss and its ramifications, which include the murder of some local metaphysical practitioners.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Kirsten Weiss: Buy my book!  But I’d also like to add that I tried to incorporate magical practices as they’re actually done today.  For example, I interviewed local ghost and demon hunters to try to be as accurate as possible in Riga’s ghostly encounters.

Holly: What made you decide to self-publish?

Kirsten Weiss: I’ve got nothing against traditional publishing, but I felt impatient. The process of finding an agent and a publisher takes such a long time and I really just wanted to get this book out there. I also like the control it gives me, but it requires a much bigger marketing effort when you’re on your own

In today's global economy, businesses need people who understand how to market and manage across cultures.

Kirsten Weiss is an international marketing consultant based in San Mateo, CA, and works at the intersection of culture, marketing and organization. She graduated with honors from Thunderbird, with an MBA in International Management and a specialization in global marketing. Having neither international nor management experience at the time, she joined the Peace Corps and was sent to a cold part of the former Soviet Union, where she ended up in the marketing department of the Estonian Tourism Board. There, she developed a plan for the country’s tourism sector, and key strategies from that plan are still in use today.

She then embarked on a 14 year career in development finance, which took her around the fringes of the former Soviet Union, into Afghanistan, North Africa, and the Middle East. There, she successfully managed projects and marketing programs in these challenging, often volatile, emerging markets. Her clients have included global institutions such as the World Bank, IFC and USAID but her passion is helping small to mid-sized businesses understand their client needs and meet them.....Read full bio here
