Review: The Secret (Highlands' Lairds #1) by Julie Garwood

5 Stars
Series: Highlands' Lairds, #1
Author: Julie Garwood
Genre: Historical Romance
Publisher: Pocket
Mass Market Paperback
Pages: 384
Purchase: Thriftbooks
The Secret is the first novel in author Julie Garwood’s Highlands' Lairds series, in it we meet Judith Hampton an Englishwoman who is set to come to her Scottish friend Frances Catherine’s call when the time comes that she is pregnant after having years ago made the promise she would help out, after the news that both her mother and grandmother died in or not long after child birth.

Frances Catherine’s husband, Patrick, promised before they married that she could come when the time came and he means to keep his word to her.

Laird Iain Maitland, his brother comes to his rescue in a sort to the council and ends up getting them to agree that the Englishwoman can come, though all seem to agree that they do not believe the woman will keep her word, she is English after all.

So Iain, as Patrick’s brother, sets off with three other warriors to go to England. Only to be surprised when the woman not only keeps her word and agrees to come back to the Highlands with them for Frances Catherine, but also that she is a very beautiful woman, and stubborn too.

Iain most of all notices this and is quite possessive of her from the very start, Judith herself notices the attraction to Iain and though at first she thinks it is harmless as she is English and he Scottish she comes to a different conclusion on the long trip to the Highlands and Maitland land.

Judith immediately is a cause for trouble, before they even arrive in Iain’s mind, not that the woman seems to realize it, for his three companions have all taken a liking to her and upon arriving back home she in no time gains the loyalty and trust from his people as well.

Mostly because of her loyalty to them, she helped birthing children even though she was terrified, and then came to the inquisition of the priest questioning her about it.

Soon though secrets that Judith would have best left undiscovered about her parentage comes out into the light and the worry over the Iain’s people’s reaction, pales almost in what his reaction to the news might be.

Iain and Judith are another couple that Garwood has written that falls in love almost immediately, again, even if one or both of them either do not realize it yet, or just does not want to admit it.

Another Garwood favorite and I can not wait to start the second novel in this series, Ransom.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for a good Historical Romance novel to read.
