Choosing characters to launch a series by KH LeMoyne

Holly, thank you for hosting me on the Full Moon Bites blog. It’s wonderful to be here and be able to share with your followers. I thought I might detail some of my thought processes for developing the Guardians of Eden and targeting which characters should launch the series.

The question of whether humans have had supernatural help at critical times in our development set the general premise for the series. Out of those musings the Guardians of Eden were born, a race of people originating in the same Eden as Adam and Eve. This race is bound in a covenant to ensure the evolution of mankind, each Guardian child releasing the souls for mankind's spiritual well-being. The first book in the series, Betrayal’s Shadow begins in the present day, two hundred years after a plague has killed most of the adult Guardians on earth. At the time of the plague, the children under the age of maturity were sent back to the Sanctum in Eden for their protection. Children raising children with much of their history and direction lost. What remains is a finite group of people, representing segments of humanity from all over the world. Each adult Guardian in a generation is gifted with a unique power. Compliance with the covenant rewards each Guardian with a mate with whom they share a soul for eternity. Now adults, the surviving Guardians are unable to find mates within their race and the curse of the plague still hovers over them.

As with any being, be they human or the Guardians, there is always a problem with power, the drive to control others, and the serpent in the garden. The series delves into the lost history of the Guardian race and the consequences and temptations of power.

Resolution to the Guardians’ problem is a heavy challenge. I spent a lot of time considering the essential traits and motivations for Turen and Mia who search for answers in Betrayal’s Shadow. First I had to figure out what makes them tick, what lines they would refuse to cross, and then how to force them over those same lines by their own impetus. Their loyalty and tenacity set the stage for the major changes the Guardians will undertake to regain their footing in the world.

And because Mia and Turen don’t just meet on the street, a work place or through some social network, but in a drug lord’s prison cell, their survival depends on their responses to stress and their ability to determine that they can trust each other. Most important, their character development has to make sense.

Actually, relationships and bonds, what priorities people choose in their lives during a desperate situation is an underlying theme in this story. Turen’s membership in a secretive Guardian race and Mia’s human existence as a freelance writer offers them no middle ground to relate to each other. Almost. However add in their bizarre introduction, the repercussions of their being discovered, a potential end to the Guardian race and the ruination of mankind’s future and the result—a hero and heroine with strong motivations to ensure the other succeeds. Aside from the respect they develop for each other.

Situations drive goals and a person’s internal character will determine the choices they make, but it takes time and experiences for people to trust each other. Lasting commitments and solid friendships don’t sprout overnight. It takes a little nurture and the right mix of dangerous circumstances.

I still love that ‘love at first sight’ storyline, but I wanted more than just lust and chemistry to clinch the perfect match. A match where two people grow to love and trust each other, whether they can have each other forever or not. That is the type of relationship I tried to portray in Betrayal’s Shadow, and hopefully in each sequel in the series.

I’m knee-deep in writing the third book in this series, Destiny’s Mark, but my goal is still the same—developing characters I respect and enjoy, a storyline that keeps me interested through every edit, and a love that makes me glad I spent the time writing. I hope readers will enjoy this book and the ones to follow as well.

Best wishes.

Betrayal’s Shadow
Author: KH LeMoyne
Series: Guardians of Eden, #1
"What would you do to save your people from extinction?
What if your race held the key to mankind’s future?
One Guardian will risk hell to change the future.
Descended from the race of Guardians, Turen’s people have survived the last two hundred years, quarantined and isolated. Living in secrecy with no mates and no offspring, they fail to deliver on their ability to replenish and heal human souls through the birth of their Guardian children. Risking his life, Turen chooses capture at the hands of a comrade-turned-enemy to seek answers to change the future.

Mia Bowman has no knowledge of the secret Guardian race. Yet, her uncontrollable, nocturnal summons to Turen’s prison cell and her strong sense of justice leave her with little choice but to help him. She can heed his warning and stay clear of his people’s problems or she can ferret out the lies and unravel an ancient tale of murder and deceit. It will take an ultimate sacrifice to stop the unexpected evil and reverse a fatal ending to the Guardian line.

A race of beings created in a Sanctum at the far edge of Eden. Co-existing with mankind, they safeguarded human souls and the promise of eternity—until a virus killed all over the age of eighteen. The surviving children fled to the Sanctum for protection, children raising children without the full legacy of their history and knowledge. Two hundred years of solitude have produced a race of semi-immortals fortified with powers and intellect but lacking the mates who will make them whole and allow them to fulfill their covenant with mankind."
