Review: Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson #1) by Patricia Briggs

In author Patricia Briggs second Mercedes Thompson novel Mercy gets called in on a favor she owes Stefan, known to some as the Solider, a vampire who helped her out in the first novel.

Nothing was supposed to go wrong, Stefan just wanted Mercy to come along as a coyote because she is mostly impervious to magic and as her animal-self, no one would suspect her anyways—she was just, insurance to tell what happened if something went wrong while Stefan visited a vampire who was under suspicion.

Everything goes wrong. Mercy does get hurt. Stephan loses it. And a demon possessed vampire is killing in the Tri-Cities.

I really enjoyed this second novel, Mercy is a wonderful character; she is strong, funny, and loyal to her friends and more. The plot of the book was pretty fast paced; I actually wish the book would have read slower so I could have enjoyed it for longer.

In this novel, the werewolves have ‘come out’ like the Fae did, we picked up the ‘coming out’ in the end of the first novel really, but in this one we get some more details though I wished there would have been more. I guess that will come in the next few books, I hope.

We have recurring character in this novel, ones the series could not live without in my mind—Adam, the hunky oh-so-wonderfully dominate Alpha who lives next door to Mercy. Stefan, of course, her (only) vampire friend—who happens to drive a Scooby-Doo vehicle and I think care about
Mercy WAY
more than she knows.

Samuel, her teenage love who has for some reason decided to stay with her instead of going back home in the last novel and has gone lone-wolf. Two dominate aggressive, wolves who like/love Mercy living side-by-side, oh, my. I really can’t decide who I love more of the two, or which I think Mercy should be with but everything to me says its leaning toward Adam, who I think should be more, I do not know, I feel like him and Mercy are not really involved unless something bad is happening.

Also we have Bran Cornick, the leader of all Alpha’s in North-America who also happens to be Samuel’s dad. I really like Bran, I have to say that I would love it if he was in the novel’s more than he already is—and if he was not mated already I think I would want him and Mercy to be together. He is fun, not to mention he sounds very dangerous and dominate in an unassuming way if that makes sense.

Mercy learns more about herself in this novel as well, as a Walker she had always known she can change shape, she learned in the last novel that she had some immunity to magic/vampires, and why the vampires did not like her.

Now we learn she can see ghosts.

Altogether this was a wonderful, plot and action filled novel with touches of romance, some humor and suspense. I would recommend this series to anyone.
