Review: Dead in the Family (Sookie Stackhouse #10) by Charlaine Harris

3 Stars
Series: Sookie Stackhouse, #10
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Vampires, Urban Fantasy, Mystery,
Publisher: Ace Hardcover
Hardcover
Pages: 311
Book Description via Goodreads
Purchase: Thriftbooks
We pick up sometime after the Fae War in this novel. After the things Sookie Stackhouse, barmaid and telepath, had to go through in the last novel, you would think she would try and lay low and stay out of the paranormal world, at least for a while, but with Eric Northman vampire and Sheriff of Area 5 as her boyfriend it’s kind of hard not to be drawn in.

As with most of the Sookie Stackhouse novels we really have two main important plot lines.

One involving vampires, of course—Eric’s maker or as Sookie calls him Eric’s ‘dad’, comes to visit with his newest child Eric’s brother for reasons unknown except that being around Eric will help the brother ‘condition’.

Right away you know this is not going to turn out well. I liked this plot line, I thought it gave us a little insight to Eric that we would not have had otherwise—but on the other hand I thought it was kind of unfinished, even after we learn of a second reason that his maker may have been there for . . .

The second main plot comes in the form of the werewolf pack. Once again Sookie gets dragged into their politics. On a side note we do get a lot more about how the world—mostly the government though—is taking the news that there are wereanimals.

Altogether I liked it, it was a pretty quick read but like the last couple of books and the first novel in this series I was sad to find that it to felt like it was missing the tension and build up that the other novels had.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who has read and liked the previous novels in the series.
