Interview with John Zunski

Holly: Can you tell us a little bit about your book Cemetery Street?

John Zunski: Cemetery Street explores the mix of happiness and tragedy that accompanies us as we navigate our way through the volatile teen years and through the indecision of early adulthood. It reminds us that bonds we establish early in our life echo into our future, shaping who we are and how we relate to the world.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

John Zunski: The characters. Great characters come with interesting stories built in... It's part of their DNA.

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

John Zunski: The desire to pen “The Great American Novel.” It’s hardly an original inspiration, but it provided the courage to take on a dream. Once started, the process took me on an incredible ride of determination, emotion and self-discovery. Until then, I never truly understood that writing can be a courageous act. It is amazing the challenging places a muse will guide you if one has the intestinal fortitude to follow.  Most of the events in Cemetery Street are made up, but there are a precious few that were inspired by life’s events.

Holly: Where can we purchase Cemetery Street?

John Zunski: Paperback

Holly: When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

John Zunski: I was introduced to the world with a pen in hand, before I could crawl I drew squiggly lines on my crib. When I could walk, I found my way to the typewriter, maybe it the noise of the keys, that rhythmic ratta-tat-tat sounded more magical than music, or maybe it was the bell that dinged after a bunch of ratta-tat-tats.  Whatever it was, I found myself looking up, impatient to sit before it. When I finally did, I made lots of noise and a blizzard of scrap paper.

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2012?

John Zunski: Nightwatching - which is a ghost story will be released later this year. A date hasn't been set.

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

John Zunski: Montana Rural, which is the sequel to Cemetery Street.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

John Zunski: Life can’t be encapsulated into a single genre, neither can my novels. From stories of impossible love to forays into the darkest recesses of the mind, I explore the human experience. We all know life is often wondrous and at other times challenging, sometimes horrifying – my characters are not immune, and are often thrust into situations a reader wouldn’t wish upon an enemy. A reader experiences the richness of the character’s feelings, understands their fears, celebrates their triumphs, shares their joys, joins them in laughter and in tears. Like friends, my characters may find a place in a your heart.

Holly: When do you prefer to read?

John Zunski: Anytime I have a spare moment.
