Interview with KH LeMoyne, author of Dragon Rider's Gift!

KH LeMoyne is author of more than five novels, to name a few, Betrayal's Shadow, Shepherd, Rebel’s Consort, Return of the Legacy and Dragon Rider's Gift.

Holly: Hi KH! Would you tell us a little about yourself?

KH LeMoyne: Holly, thank you for hosting me today. Hmm, what to say? My life isn’t as action packed as my characters. Which is good. I’m a mom, a wife, and a dedicated corgi lover. I worked in the computer technology industry for many years before I turned to writing full time.

Holly: How did you first become interested in writing?

KH LeMoyne: I’ve enjoyed reading since I was a kid. I would curl up on the couch on a summer’s day and read old books I found in my grandparents attic. I loved to escape into a story. At some point, I started rewriting the endings I didn’t like in my head. It wasn’t much of a leap from that to creating my own characters and stories. I read across genres, but I write adult romance with elements of fantasy. Something about mixing a well-matched couple with supernatural elements appeals to my muse.

Holly: You have a couple series going on at the moment, one being your Phoenix series, the first novel called, Rebel’s Consort. Would you mind telling us a little bit about this novel and the series in general?

KH LeMoyne: The Phoenix Legend stories take place on Earth in the 22nd century after a virulent outbreak of salmonella infects crops and livestock, wiping out eighty percent of the world’s human population. The result: civilization has decayed, new ruling parties of Regents have assumed control, and the society of middle and lower classes must adapt or perish. There is also a black market for human parts run by the Regents. I won’t get into that too much, as its key to the first story. But those who reject this horrid approach find their way to join the underground rebellion and fight.

I admit, I’ve watched too many episodes of the History Channel’s ‘Life After People’. However, the breakdown of roads and facilities happens very quickly in a world with no one to maintain civilization. In the Phoenix series, only a few technology-based cities have survived, built on top of old civilizations. Humans live above in a semblance of normal society, while others live below in a harder life of barter and secrecy, avoiding the Regent guards. Rebel’s Consort and book two, Shepherd, revolve around the lives of underground rebels in this society and the challenges and love that are the basis of their humanity.

Holly: What was your inspiration for this series?

KH LeMoyne: Rebel’s Consort was originally a futuristic cyberpunk romance written for a publisher’s open call. The world building I have to credit to the history channel and a bit of my own background in computer network and technology. The characters, Analena, Trace, Shepherd, Esme, and of course Ty, evolved in my imagination as future warriors in this society. Everyone has a past, no one is who they seem, and everyone has an opportunity to shape the future.

Holly: You have two other series The Guardians of Eden and The Portals of Destiny. Both series were published last year along with the Phoenix series as well. Do you have any more plans for a third book in The Guardians of Eden series and/or a second novel for The Portals of Destiny series?

KH LeMoyne: The third book in the Guardians of Eden, Destiny’s Mark, is due to go to my editor in mid June, with a Sept 12th release date. I’m really pleased that readers have enjoyed the Guardians and their difficulties. The second book in the Portals series, Reward of Valor, won’t be out until next spring. The Portals of Destiny is a five book that culminates with the confrontation of the Makir bloodline, the portal gatekeepers, and the mage of Brennagemore.

Holly: You newest novel, the first published in 2012 is called Dragon Rider's Gift. Can you tell us a little bit about this novel?

KH LeMoyne: Dragon Rider’s Gift is an adult fantasy romance. I developed it as a spin-off of my Portals of Destiny series, which takes place across several magical dimensions and follows the rise of an evil mage in the world of Tir Thar and his war for supremacy. Dragon Rider’s Gift brings one battle to the homeland of the dragon riders.

Here’s the overview:
Roark of Nedres spent his life absorbing lore, legend, and rumor to claim his dragon beast in order to save his people. Nothing has prepared him for the ultimate bond fate will demand.

Princess Nira Meriel Estar was born with the power of prophecy. Her most recent vision forecasts a dire fate for her people, promises few answers, and will deliver the country of Fyrhall a victorious future or crushing defeat.

Kraz, an ancient dragon of mythical power and knowledge, has eluded capture for a thousand years. However, only a dragon of great wisdom would consider an eternal bond to his warrior rider to save his dragon race.

Holly: Is this going to be a stand along novel or might it have a second novel follow along in the future?

KH LeMoyne: Dragon Rider’s Gift is the first story in a dragon rider trilogy. These are shorter books, following the resurgence of the dragon riders to the glory they held before the mage of Brennagemore began his war.

Holly: I love your book covers, especially Betrayal's Shadow, it has to be my favorite—who does your cover art?

KH LeMoyne: Robin Ludwig does my covers. She is incredibly talented and wonderful to work with. A full view of her covers can be found at http://coversbyrobin.deviantart.com/gallery/ .

Holly: Do you have any plans for more books in 2012?

KH LeMoyne: After Destiny’s Mark, I’m plan to start Guardian book four and then the second story in the dragon rider trilogy.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

KH LeMoyne: Thank you for reading and spending your valuable time with my stories. And a special thanks to those of you who have sent me notes and emails. You are my motivation!

Roark walked slowly to the edge, squatted, and stared into the cavern below.
Rivers of molten rock and magma lakes covered the cavern’s perimeter. Occasional lava sprays reached for an island rising from the center. Spider webs of heavy iron chains on the spit of land covered a chrysalis of leathered flesh.
Clamped and manacled, the object of his quest remained motionless. Then, as if in response to Roark’s presence, the flesh flexed. Narrow bones spread like a Merian dancer’s fan to expose mountains of thick muscle covered in glistening ruby and bronze scales.
The creature shifted. A thick iron collar circled a neck the size of an elephant. More iron connected claws and hind legs to chains riveted to the four compass points of the cavern.
In awe, Roark watched as the huge head turned toward him. Two nostrils flared and exhaled smoke. From beneath a browridge longer than Roark’s body, moon-sized marbles of orange and black zeroed in on his position.
He forced a smile. He could fake confidence if need be. “Before you consider blasting me to hell and back, it’s fair to let you know I’ve come to release you.”

A former technology specialist, KH LeMoyne writes sensual romance: urban and high fantasy, and scifi/futuristic. She lives in Maryland with her wonderful husband and corgi. Much to her dismay, she rarely encounters supernatural beings other than on paper. Visit her website: http://www.khlemoyne.com/
