Author of the Week, D. VonThaer, Interview & Giveaway

D. VonThaer

About the Author:

Dayna Ranelle was born late July, 1976 in Niles, Ohio. (She shares a birthday with Harry Potter and his creator, Ms. Rowling.) A born and bred writing gypsy and veritable vagabond, she trolled around the east coast and London before sinking her feet into southern soil. A prolific writer, she has nearly twenty unfinished manuscripts collecting dust. One-by-one she is dusting them off and adding a coat or two of polish for publication. That is until another idea pops into her head and takes over.

Interview with Dayna VonThaer

Holly: Hi Dayna! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

D. VonThaer: Hi, I'm Dayna but most people just call me D. I'm a mother, a wife, and a gypsy living in suburbia. I've been writing forever and I hide away all my stories when I am done with them. I went to school for psychology, clearly not listening to my inner voice. Finally, I decided to listen (with a ton of encouragement from my husband) and refocused my life on my passion for storytelling.

Holly: Can you tell us a little bit about your book Tuatha and the Seven Sisters Moon?

D. VonThaer: Tuatha and the Seven Sisters Moon is the first in the series and it begins on Halloween during the full moon. The proverbial veil falls the world over, bringing ancient myths to the modern world. However, their prophecies and rules are not working, nothing is in place, and they are all scrambling to reclaim their former glory. In Tuatha, we meet the ancient Celts of the Tuatha De Danann and their All-Father Aodh, who has risen after a 2000 year long slumber. He meets a witch living on the coast of Ireland, and together they try to unlock their world so they can rebuild. Of course, nothing goes as planned.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

D. VonThaer: The characters. I worked for years on building the back story for every character in this and subsequent novels. Some of them cross paths, across genres and book series. Some characters may not see the light of day as a published story, but they are there and important all the same.

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

D. VonThaer: The story, the very first taste of Tuatha, began when I was pregnant with my daughter in 2003. I was hot, there was no way I could feel cool enough to sleep. One night I went downstairs to get some relief from the scorching summer heat and started writing about a pregnant witch living on the Irish coast. I fantasized about cool mists and bright moonlight for the final months of my pregnancy.

Holly: Where can we purchase Tuatha and the Seven Sisters Moon?

D. VonThaer: Tuatha is available in bookstores, and online at the following retailers: http://www.amazon.com/Tuatha-Seven-Sisters-Moon-ebook/dp/B004U6WM7O

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2012?

D. VonThaer: Yes! The second Tuatha book is called Serpentine Souls and it will be out beginning of summer. I have another novel, the horror story Niles which is based in my hometown of Niles, Ohio due in a few weeks.

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

D. VonThaer: After Serpentine Souls and Niles will be a book called Blue Moon. I've been working on this for years and I am so excited about it, I can barely breathe. It is a werewolf book, but like most of my writing, the history and characters make the story. The wolves are almost secondary, however, they are created by the history of the region. The research is such a great time when I'm writing a book. I love doing research. I feel like if I've done my job researching material and places, then the reader can just sit back and sink their teeth into the story, any story.

Holly: Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

D. VonThaer: Absolutely! I love writing, and for me, there is no set genre that cages my brain. I have several literary fiction books that I would love to publish. All in good time!

Holly: Do you think you will have a follow up book to this novel or is it just a stand-alone novel?

D. VonThaer: There are seven books in the Tuatha series.

Holly: What was your inspiration for this novel, or the series in general?

D. VonThaer: A few years after the birth of my daughter, I went to London and had dinner with a friend and his family. His father was a fabulously loud Irishman that took great pleasure in ribbing me about my name, Dayna. Dana, or Danu, is the Irish Mother Goddess. We talked for hours and the story of Tuatha was born out of the marriage of my Irish witch and the chance meeting with my friend's father.

Holly: Who or what influenced your writing once you began?

D. VonThaer: Places really influence me. I lived in London and Salem when I was writing Tuatha. The book was finished in Dallas, but writing for the entire series happened between castles and witches.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

D. VonThaer: I hope my readers enjoy each story I write and I hope they can envision themselves in the story, living it with the characters. I also hope that as more books come out they remain engaged. I also hope they enjoy the different types of genres I write, even if they have a favorite. I would love for them to love my woves as much as my goddesses.
