Interview with Desiree Finkbeiner

Holly: Hi Desiree! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Desiree Finkbeiner: I am an artist/author from NW Arkansas. I love education, reading, writing, art, family etc Not much of a social butterfly, but I do love people. I just don't get out much ha ha.

Holly: When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

Desiree Finkbeiner: I actually wrote my first novel when I was 12. My sister read it and told me that I should continue writing. I dabbled with it here and there but never pursued it as a career because, at the time, I was more focused on touring with my rock band and completing my art degree. Now that motherhood has taken a priority, I am able to relax and write the books I've always wanted to write. I wrote a long novel in 2012 but didn't have much luck with it, so I set it on the back burner. However, when the idea for Ethos popped into my head, I KNEW I needed to pursue getting it published.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Desiree Finkbeiner: The plot struck me first. The dragonflies were actually the first characters I developed, so I needed a plot to stick them in. The rest was born from there.

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

Desiree Finkbeiner: For Ethos, it all started with a dragonfly. I was recovering from a surgery and was all loopy on the painkillers (I hate those things ha ha) when they started to play tricks on my brain. I saw a big purple dragonfly floating around the room. So I let imagination take control and it led to the creation of Ethos.

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2012?

Desiree Finkbeiner: Yes, book #2 of the Ethos series comes out later this year. Also, sometime in late May, a special edition print edition will be release which will include 20+ detailed illustrations of my art for the series.

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

Desiree Finkbeiner: Aside of the sequels to Ethos, I am also working on a steampunk/mystery/sci-fi series.

Holly: Can you tell us a little about your first publishing experience?

Desiree Finkbeiner: When I sent Ethos out to publishers, pitching it for publication, I was a bit leery- thinking I would get nothing but rejections... But I was very surprised to receive 3 offers within only a couple weeks. The choice was not hard though, when I started becoming familiar with each of the presses, Hydra Publications gave me a great vibe, so I signed with them. And I don't regret it one bit.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Desiree Finkbeiner: I'd love to hear from you. Your opinions, suggestions and ideas are valuable to me (no matter how small). Feel free to contact me through my website or comment on one of my social networking sites. I spend the most time on Facebook, and that's the best way to be in touch with me. A good relationship with the people who follow my work means a lot to me, so don't be strangers!

Holly: Where do you see yourself at in five years—writing wise?

Desiree Finkbeiner: I hope to have at least five more books out. Fantasy is my favorite genre, but I love many of the sub-genres too, so I will probably experiment with them.

Random Quickies!

Holly: What do you prefer to read?

Desiree Finkbeiner: Non fiction, especially on conspiracy theories. But I also love fantasy.

Holly: Vampires or Werewolves?

Desiree Finkbeiner: Vampires. They are more civilized, ha ha.

Holly: Witches or Zombies?

Desiree Finkbeiner: Witches, I don't care for brains on the menu.

Holly: Supernatural or Psych? (TV Shows)

Desiree Finkbeiner: Supernatural. But I hate TV, I don't watch it.

Holly: Fangs or Fur?

Desiree Finkbeiner: Depends on what they are attached to ;)

Holly: Ebook or hardcover/paperback?

Desiree Finkbeiner: ebook. Save the trees! Declutter!

Holly: Fast Food or Organic?

Desiree Finkbeiner: Organic. You are what you eat.

Holly: Morning person or night owl?

Desiree Finkbeiner: Night owl. I write when everyone else in the house is asleep.
