Interview with Tendai Huchu

Holly: Hi Tendai! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Tendai Huchu: I was born and raised in Bindura, a sleepy mining town north of Harare, in Zimbabwe. I now live in Edinburgh, which is where I write and work. My first novel the Hairdresser of Harare was published in English, German and there is a French Translation to come.

Holly: When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

Tendai Huchu: When I was in my early twenties, I read a lot and I used to come across ideas in books which blew my mind. I think I fell in love with the power of words, the ability of the story to convey ideas and emotions.

Holly: Can you tell us a little bit about your book An Untimely Love?

Tendai Huchu: An Untimely Love is the story about Khalid Patel, a terrorist, who falls in love on the day he is supposed to martyr himself. We follow him as his ideas about the world, and how it should be, begin to change profoundly.

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

Tendai Huchu: The novel is divided into three novellas. The first part entitled, The Last Day of a Suicide Bomber, is modelled on Victor Hugo's The Last Day of a condemned man. A powerful piece on capital punishment. I was experimenting with that voice, and then I realized I could take my story a little further.

Holly: Where can we purchase An Untimely Love?

Holly: Do you think you will have a follow up book to this novel or is it just a stand-alone novel?

Tendai Huchu: No, it is a stand alone novel.

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

Tendai Huchu: Yes I am, but it's bad luck to talk about work in progress.

Holly: Can you tell us a few do’s and don’ts for aspiring authors?

Tendai Huchu: Do read, a lot. There is nothing about writing that you can't discover for yourself in a book. Don't give into despair and self doubt.

Holly: Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

Tendai Huchu: That's exactly what I am doing with my writing. I read across all genres and it seems that my work is beginning to reflect this. The Hairdresser of Harare and An Untimely Love have attracted very different audiences, a few of whom cross over, but they seem to be very distinct blocks. My next book is going to be different stylistically and thematically, because I think each story must be approached differently, and have its own soul.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Tendai Huchu: Keep on reading. Nothing warms an author's heart more than interacting with readers and talking about literature.

Holly: Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

Tendai Huchu: I am working my way through a Song of Ice and Fire. I think George RR Martin has done a fantastic thing with genre fantasy, and even though it is not a genre I work in, there is a lot to learn for a writer in terms of the technique and craftsmanship with which he has written this series.
