Interview with Krystal Wade, author of the Darkness Falls series!

Krystal Wade is author of paranormal YA series Darkness Falls which includes Wilde's Fire and the second novel Wilde's Army published by Curiosity Quills Press!

Holly: Hi Krystal! :) Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Krystal Wade: I'm a full-time LOT of things. I work very far from home while caring for a family of five. In my spare time, I write books and work for Curiosity Quills Press. Most of my stories center around things in my life that I love. For instance, the great outdoors is featured in pretty much everything I write. I love hiking, camping, and generally all things animals. Look for a connection to those things in my work, and you'll recognize the "me" in my stories.

Holly: When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

Krystal Wade: I realized I wanted to write in third grade, but didn't realize I wanted to be an author until a few years ago. However, I didn't sit down and allow the words to flow until 2011. Accepting that part of me was difficult but rewarding.

Holly: What is the hardest part of writing in your opinion?

Krystal Wade: Finding balance between all things "me".

Holly: Can you tell us a little bit about your first book Wilde's Fire?

Krystal Wade: Wilde's Fire is a story about a girl who believes to have a relatively perfect life, but that thought is shattered when she, her sister, and her best friend stumble into a world without sunlight. Kate soon discovers everything she's ever believed has been a lie, and that she's a supposed heroine to this new world. But as with many fantasy stories, she discovers there is light in the darkness.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Krystal Wade: The characters. Kate is someone who I've written about since I was a little girl.

Holly: The second book in your Darkness Falls series just came out July 4th, Wilde's Army, can you tell us a little bit about this second novel?

Krystal Wade: In Wilde's Army, Kate has a better understanding of who she is and what she can do, but she's alone. She decides to trust those around her, as she was instructed to do by a god, and sets out to find everyone she cares about and form an army. But Kate unravels more lies about her life, and even makes plans to tell lies. She struggles throughout the book to abide by everyone else's rules.

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel or series in general?

Krystal Wade: I saw an image of a girl reaching out her finger to touch something shimmering in a dense, green forest. That was all I had.

Holly: Why paranormal-young adult?

Krystal Wade: I love magic and war and politics and romance, so combine them all, and we get the paranormal/fantasy. Young adult because I find adult novels to be jaded, marred by views of the world. There's something young and innocent about YA novels. No matter the subject, there's always hope for a better tomorrow.

Holly: Do you have any idea yet of how many books might be in this series, should we expect a third novel feature the heroine Katriona Wilde?

Krystal Wade: The third and final installment of Darkness Falls will be out some time this year. ;-)

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2012?

Krystal Wade: I have a couple works up my sleeves, but they are pretty hush hush at the moment. You won't see them on shelves in 2012, but definitely 2013.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Krystal Wade: THANK YOU! That is all.

Holly: Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

Krystal Wade: I'm reading Providence by Jamie McGuire . . . I'm holding judgment until the end.

I’m happily married to the love of my life and raising three beautiful children in Virginia. We live just outside Washington, D.C., and every day I wake up to find myself stuck in traffic trying to get there.

The commute gives me plenty of time to zone out and think about my characters in full, brilliant details—I’m a safe driver, don’t worry. Stories give me a way to forget about the strangers sitting next to me on the fifty mile trek into town (I pick up hitchhikers every day. True story. If you don't believe me check out

I’ve been a part of organized hitchhiking for eleven years, so why don’t I have more books you ask? Well, when I was in third grade, I realized I loved writing, but a combination of spiral notebooks and cramped hands made me set my love aside. By the time everyone had computers in their home, I cared more about my social life than anything else.

Four years ago, one of my long-time characters knocked inside my head and begged to be released, and so I wrote . . . and I hated every word of it. She knocked again in January, and this time I listened and didn’t stop writing. Since then ideas have been coming from everywhere—and I do mean everywhere. From nature, from conversations, from out of nowhere. I’ve been jotting them down and plotting for each new book.

So for wishful thinking’s sake, maybe you’ll read all of my books one day and maybe, just maybe, you’ll like them.
