Return to Willow Lake

Genre: Contemporary Romance,
Publisher: Harlequin MIRA
Pages: 320

Return to Willow Lake is author Susan Wiggs ninth novel of the Lakeshore Chronicles.

I have never read a book by this author before so I did not really know what to expect going in but I found that I liked Return to Willow Lake. It is very much the love story, the kind you see in romance movies and novels all the time and it is very contemporary in setting.

In Return to Willow Lake we meet Sonnet Romano, her life is perfect. She has a great job and t might be getting better, the perfect boyfriend—daddy approved—she is on the fast track to somewhere big. Then her mother is tells her that she is pregnant and it is high risk—very high risk.

Sonnet doesn’t think twice about dropping everything to return to her home town of Avalon to be with her mother. And when she finds out just how high risk the pregnancy is Sonnet puts everything on hold, her job, the offer for the Fellowship which she just received—everything, thinking she will pick it back up when her mother is well and out of any danger.

This book was very…emotional. Honestly I have never read a book that focused on the subject mostly because I thought they would make me sad and I am not one to read sad books really and I was right, this book make me tear up n more than one place but it also literally gave me chill bumps in others.

The bond between Sonnet and her mother is unbreakable and the length Sonnet is willing to go for her, it was just truly wonderful and heartbreaking to read.

Sonnet s the daughter of her mother and a man who is running for Senator, Sonnet’s father was not a part of her life when she was little and now that she is older, and though he has another family with a woman and children, she is trying to have some kind of relationship with him. Being around her father she gained a high-standing boyfriend named Orlando.

But being the daughter of someone who is running for senator is no picnic as Sonnet will learn when they try to use her father’s relationship with her mother and her illegitimate birth against him.

I have to say that I did not like Sonnet’s father—in fact by the end of the book I kind of wished Sonnet would have cut ties with him but I guess in her own way she does. The same goes for Orlando, I did not like him at all—he was very, well cold, like the whole relationship was business, something he was supposed to do, and had to do even.

In Avalon though lives Sonnet’s childhood friend, Zach. Zach who after not seeing for years she had a one night stand with, Zach who is not the gangly geeky boy he used to be but a tall and handsome man.

In Return to Willow Lake, not only do we see Sonnet’s relationship and the trials with her mother but we also see the relationship forming between her and Zach, even though Sonnet fights it trying to stick to her life plan.

In the end Sonnet has to choose, does she go back to her old life and job, take the Fellowship that was offered to her? Or does she face up to her feeling and tell Zach, and stay in Avalon?

As above—I truly liked this book, t was much more emotionally involving that most I have read and do not let that make you think the whole book s sad, it is not and of curse there is a HEA. :)

We get the point-of-view form more than one character; Sonnet, Zach, and her mother Nina.

Please do not let that this is the ninth book of the series deter you if you have this book. I am pretty sure each can be read as a stand along they are all just set in the tiny town of Avalon.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good contemporary romance read.
