In Heart of a Soldier we meet Warrant Officer Jameson Hunter, who is on leave healing a rotator cuff tear and Charlotte Mackenzie, called Charlie. Her son Evan is interested in joining the Army and Jamie is the man they both meet with to talk about it.

As Evan’s mother Charlie of course does not want him to join the Army, after losing her husband when Evan was just 12, he is all she has, but she does not want Evan to know how much she wishes he would not join—putting on a brave face the go to meet Jamie and talk about Evan’s future in the Army and what it would entail.

Jamie is as attracted to Charlie as she is him when they meet and asks her out on a date to ‘talk more about the Army’.

Things go from here and we get a very short but heart warming tale about a mother’s worry over her son and her relationship with the man who is essentially encouraging the Army future for her son.

I liked this short novella by author Tamara Hoffa. She is a new author to me but I will keep an eye out for more work(s) by her.

Charlie I think has the biggest part in the novella. She has her son and a new relationship for the first time since her husband’s death and it takes a lot for her to overcome that instinctive mother thing to protect her child and let him make his own choices.

I did not particularly dislike anything about this novella but one thing that did bug me was the use of the word ‘girl’ between Charlie and her friend (ex. I know, girl). I have nothing against the use of the word in books or anything but it just did not really feel like it fit in this novella or the characters to me. Others might think differently about this though.

This would be a great novella for anyone interested in a quick contemporary romance read.

*I received a hardcover/paperback/eBook copy/ARC of this book for free to review from the author/publisher/tour site; this in no way influenced my review, all opinions are 100% honest and my own.
