Author of the Week, John C. Dalglish, Interview

John C. Dalglish

About the Author:

John Dalglish lives in Southwest Missouri with Beverly, his wife of 29 years, and 4 dogs. He wrote his first story over forty years ago.
He has three sons, three grandchildren, and another grandchild on the way.

Interview with John C. Dalglish

Holly: Hi John! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

John C. Dalglish: I am an avid reader and crossword puzzle aficionado. I live with my wife and 4 dogs. I am low man on the totem pole in this house. lol.

Holly: When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

John C. Dalglish: My son, David Dalglish, is a successful author of epic fantasy. One day my wife said to me, I can't put two sentences together. He must have got it somewhere. Why don't you try writing. So, I did.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

John C. Dalglish: Plot. But only vaguely. The most exciting part of writing for me is the evolution of story and characters.

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

John C. Dalglish: I was adopted as a child and got me to thinking of different paths it could take.

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2012?

John C. Dalglish: At least one and I have a collection of short stories I'm excited about.

Holly: Can you tell us a little about your first publishing experience?

John C. Dalglish: Putting a book on sale online is almost an out of body experience. My effort is out there for everyone to judge.

Holly: Can you tell us a few do’s and don’ts for aspiring authors?

John C. Dalglish: The biggest is a don't.  Don't put a book up before it's ready. Edit and re-edit, get edit help. No matter how good the idea, if it is unreadable because of poor editing, most won't finish it.

Holly: Why this genre(s)?

John C. Dalglish: The crime suspense genre was just what landed on the screen. It wasn't a conscious decision but just came natural.

Holly: How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?

John C. Dalglish: I said in the author notes of Bloodstain, that Jason Strong is the kind of detective I would want to be.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

John C. Dalglish: I can not tell you how humbling it is to have a reader email you and say they enjoyed your work. It makes it worthwhile.
