Author of the Week, Michelle Clay, Interview & Giveaway

Michelle Clay

About the Author:

Even as a child, Michelle wasn’t afraid of the things that went bump in the night. In fact, the thought of a world where werewolves roamed and Dracula reigned king may seem like an eldritch dream to most, but was exciting to Michelle. Instead of turning on a light for comfort, she reveled in the dark, imagining the lives of what was out there roaming the night and frightening those who didn’t truly appreciate how interesting the supernatural really were.
Nowadays, her visions continuously take shape as she brings life to the worlds she has imagined since childhood. The wild imaginings that often got Michelle out of, or more often into, trouble as a young girl have informed and enriched her storytelling as an adult, bringing a fresh new voice to the paranormal romance genre.

Hi Michelle! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I think my love for all things horror is reflected in my writing. Although I primarily write paranormal romance, my pen tends to have a dark, gritty edge.

Who or what influenced your writing once you began?

I grew up in a house full of readers and everyone’s tastes were so different. Horror for my brother, sci-fi and fantasy for my uncle and my mom adored romance and mystery. With that many influences, how could I not become a voracious reader? I devoured everything in the genres they read. Sometimes I would complain that a certain book hadn’t ended right or that the hero should have done something different for a more satisfying outcome. One day, after one of these rants, my grandmother said, “Why don’t you try writing your own?” I did and by the time I was in high school, I’d written my first novella. Writing felt good and it felt right. I knew, without a doubt this would be what I wanted to do when I grew up.

Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Marcus Dane, the hero in Of A Darker Nature, came into existence long before the actual plot. I wrote his backstory first, then the mortuary scene. From there, the story took off.

Can you tell us a little about what attracted you to this genre?

How could I not be attracted to this genre? It has vampires, werewolves, and magic. These are all the things I love!

Where can we purchase [title here]?

Can we expect more novels from you in 2012?

Most definitely. Besides the WIP I'm working on now, I'm already planning Book #2 for the Darker Series and the Netherworld Series.

Are you working on anything at the moment?

Yes, my current WIP is something totally different, unrelated to what I've done previously. I don't want to give too much away, but will give a little taste. It has a badass biker dude, a ghost and an amnesiac heroine.

What is the hardest part of writing in your opinion?

The synopsis is the bane of my existence. I can write you an entire novel, but please don't ask me to sum it up in a just a few pages or paragraphs. It's torture.

How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?

People always ask me this lol. Actually, I think some of the characters do reflect people I know or have known at one time. Especially the ones I don't like!

Your life is a horror novel; how do you save the day from the bad guys?

Don't run upstairs, don't split up... basically, don't do anything the idiots in the horror movies do!

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

I'd like to say thank you for your continued support and interest in my books. Without them, none of this would be possible.

Random Quickies!

Vampires or Werewolves?

Vampires. I'm not a fan of overly hairy men lol

Supernatural or Psych? (TV Shows)

omg, that's not a fair question. Dean is hot, hot, hot... but Shawn is cute and funny. I have to say both.
Favorite book to movie?

Harry Potter (yes, I'm a total nerd)

Winter or summer?
