Interview with Virginia Nelson, author of Hypnotist!

Holly: Hi Virginia! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Virginia Nelson: Well, I’m a single mother of three wonderful children living on the frozen banks of Lake Erie.  I like to write, draw, sing off key and occasionally yell at inanimate objects. I only yell when the inanimate object deserves it, though.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Virginia Nelson: Thanks so much for allowing me to do what I love!!

Holly: Can you tell us a little bit about Hypnotist?
Virginia Nelson: Who knew quitting could be so hot?
Carnie Sabatina wants to break her bad habits, but is a hypnotist really the answer? Enter Doctor McSexy and a trip down the rabbit hole that not only makes her a believer, but sets her passion on fire.

Is it tempting fate to take control?

Mike Schommer’s love life crashed and burned when his ex dumped him for his best friend, but can playing with fire really save his heart? Enter Patient McHottie whose bad habits open a pandora’s box of secret cravings for hypnotist and patient...

Burning Up

One hypnotic suggestion sends them up in flames, but will temptation and passion be enough to turn their parlor tricks into happily ever after?

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

Virginia Nelson: I came across, somewhere on the internet, the idea theta waves are used for both hypnotism and the creative process. The idea is that the area of the brain that is active when you’re writing or making a work of art is the same area of the brain hypnotists use when bringing you to the induction, or first, stage of hypnosis.  I’d always thought before that the stronger your personality, the less likely you were to submit to hypnotism but the idea that writers dwell in that part of the brain anyway meant that artistic types might be even more susceptible than the average person to hypnotic suggestion. Add in the idea of a hypnotist who suggests his patient dare to do what she dreams and you have the questions I asked myself when writing this story.

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2012?

Virginia Nelson: Not in 2012 but I have two more books already contracted for 2013 and two more out on submissions.  There are four more waiting in the wings so hopefully you’ll see much more of me in the future!

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

Virginia Nelson: Yes, I’m writing a paranormal BDSM featuring bounty hunters and grim reapers.  It’s been a blast to write because the heroine is quite feisty.

Holly: What is the hardest part of writing in your opinion?

Virginia Nelson: Saying goodbye to the characters.  They become like friends and you fall a little in love with every hero so it’s always hard to say goodbye.

Can you tell us some of your latest news, what are your plans for 2012/2013?
Aside from more books, I will be at a few conferences next year.  I’m going to attend the Sassy Seven Naughty Sleepover, Epicon and hopefully Lori Foster’s to start out the year.

Holly: What is the easiest part of writing in your opinion?

Virginia Nelson: Ideas.  There are so many ideas but so few hours in the day…

Holly: Can you tell us a few do’s and don’ts for aspiring authors?

Virginia Nelson: Do create a support system of other authors.  Remember, you’re only competing against yourself so the more you can build up your network of author friends, the more people who understand what you’re actually doing.  Don’t be afraid to dream too big.  Do write every day. Don’t let anyone take your dream from you.  This industry is set up in a way that it will weed out those who don’t believe in what they’re fighting for.  If it’s what you want, you’ve got to want it more than everyone else.

Random Quickies!

Holly: When do you prefer to read?

Virginia Nelson: All day long

Holly: Vampires or Werewolves?

Virginia Nelson: Vamps. I don’t like hair in my teeth.

Holly: Witches or Zombies?

Virginia Nelson: Witches.  Zombies smell funny.

Holly: Supernatural or Psych?

Virginia Nelson: Neither.  Once Upon a Time or Dr. Who…lol

Holly: Ebook or hardcover/paperback?

Virginia Nelson: Both.  Ebooks are easier to hold but hardbacks look great on my shelves and paperbacks are just handy…

Holly: Favorite color?

Virginia Nelson: Slate blue

Holly: Dark Chocolate or Milk Chocolate?

Virginia Nelson: Dark.  Never white, though.  White is just vanilla with delusions of grandeur.

One hypnotic suggestion sends them up in flames, but will temptation and passion be enough to turn their parlor tricks into happily ever after?

Excerpt:

As her eyelids fluttered open, a refreshed sense of peace and energy washed over her, as if she hadn’t stayed up past three a.m. then got back up at six that morning to meet a deadline.
No, not just refreshed and energized.
Impassioned.
Flicking a glance at the man next to her, so calm and cool, she knew what she wanted.
I want him to burn like I do.
Never having experienced that kind of immediate need for someone before, she was at a loss. She normally followed her impulses but….
I dare.
He smiled at her and it was weighted with exhaustion. He came across like a nice guy. A really nice guy.
She wanted to see him be a naughty guy.
Practicing powers of seduction she didn’t even know she had, she adjusted herself on the couch, intentionally allowing her skirt to ride up.
“Look, I am sorry that the hypnotism didn’t work on me. I mean, you gave it a shot.” She tossed her hair back, wondering for a moment how it came down.
His lips curled up slowly. “Thanks for that.”
“Mmm. I could reward you for giving it a shot, anyway.”
His brows dropped. “Huh?”
One of her hands dropped to his thigh, resting on the couch next to her, and she slowly caressed the tight denim. “I mean, you tried. The least I could do is give you a kiss….”

Virginia Nelson spends her days chasing three very active kids around.  When she is not doing this, or plotting taking over the world, she likes to write, play in the mud, drive far too fast and scream at inanimate objects.  She can often be found listening to music that is far too loud and typing her next fantastic tale of blood, sex and random acts of ineptitude.  Romance, in Ms. Nelson's opinion, is not about riding off into the sunset on the back of a horse with the knight in shining armor- it is about riding the dragon.  If the knight can keep up… well, that is love.
