Interview with Elizabeth Finn, author of The Devil’s Pawn!

Today I am thrilled to have author Elizabeth Finn visiting Full Moon Bites about her book The Devil’s Pawn! Also read on for more about her upcoming plans for the rest of the year, paranormal erotic romance, what attracted her to this genre and more! :)

Welcome Elizabeth!

Holly: Hi Elizabeth! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Elizabeth Finn: Hi! By day, I’m a Human Resources Specialist in benefits, I’m mother to a four year old little boy, and I’m a junior in a business management program, thanks to a very generous tuition reimbursement program through my employer. And pretty much every free moment I have, I spend writing!

Holly: When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

Elizabeth Finn: I started writing about five years ago, but I ended up shelving that part of my life until this past spring. I’m not sure why I decided to dust off that old passion, but there was a need of some sort that just pulled me back to it. I finished a partial manuscript (Brother’s Keeper) and then just kept going. I now have three releases, and I’m writing a forth book!

Holly: Can you tell us a little bit about your book The Devil’s Pawn?

Elizabeth Finn: Here’s a blurb!
When Ashton is left orphaned after her parents are murdered, her life becomes a hell she could never have imagined. Left to fend for herself, and responsible for a debt she doesn’t owe, she is swept into a life as a gentleman’s escort at a private men’s gaming hall. Her new manager makes it abundantly clear he doesn’t appreciate her inexperience, innocence, and shyness. On the contrary, he despises everything about her.

Derek can be “difficult,” she’s been told. And however dark and handsome he may be, he terrifies her in a way that chills her to the bone, but leaves her begging to understand him. As they are pulled along together, more secrets and threats than either one could ever conceive are revealed, and a common enemy emerges. This enemy will stop at nothing to bring Derek to his knees while using Ashton as the greatest pawn in his torturous game.

Will Derek be able to let down his shield of cold, harsh emotion before it’s too late? Will he be able to sacrifice himself to save Ashton, or will they both be destroyed by the secrets of their pasts?

Holly: Where can we purchase The Devil’s Pawn?

Elizabeth Finn: Lsbooks.com, Amazon, B&N, pretty much anywhere ebooks are sold!

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2012?

Elizabeth Finn: Oh yes! In addition to The Devil’s Pawn which released on 9/17/2012, I have two other 2012 releases – Brother’s Keeper released on 10/22/2012, and Restoring Jordan will release on 12/17/2012! I’m excited about all three!

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

Elizabeth Finn: I am. I have a paranormal erotic romance that is nearly ready for submission, so hopefully…. Fingers crossed… perhaps a spring release!

Holly: Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

Elizabeth Finn: My stats text book and my business law text book – oh it’s an exciting life I lead…

Holly: Can you tell us a little about your first publishing experience?

Elizabeth Finn: Well that would be The Devil’s Pawn, and I can say after three releases now, I already feel like a seasoned pro! I’m not of course, but I’ve learned so much. The experience was far easier than I expected it to be, and I was impressed with just how easy everyone was to work with.  It was actually a lot of fun… Cover art, edits, edits, edits….

Holly: Your life is a romantic comedy; what humors but very embarrassing thing happens on your first date/when you meet the love of your life?

Elizabeth Finn: Oh I write just such characters, and I can tell you that my females love to do things like trip over their own feet, try to knock themselves out. I love absurd goofy behavior and men that love those women anyway.  Even though my writing isn’t comical, it is full of sarcasm, and I write in a good deal of embarrassment.

Holly: Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

Elizabeth Finn: Leaving that open… But I love romance… so to consider taking that element out of my writing, I’m just not sure I could!

Holly: How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?

Elizabeth Finn: Lots of little bits and pieces, but no major life copying. It might be a quirky supporting character, or a particular humiliation that I suffered that makes it in to what I write.

Holly: Is this the first novel you ever wrote or just the first published?

Elizabeth Finn: The Devil’s Pawn is actually the second I wrote, the first book I wrote, Brother’s Keeper, was released on 10/22/2012 – I just happened to submit it after I submitted The Devil’s Pawn. I became engrossed in writing The Devil’s Pawn right after I finished Brother’s Keeper, and I just shelved Brother’s Keeper until I could get The Devil’s Pawn out of my head and into my computer!

Holly: What was your inspiration for this novel?

Elizabeth Finn: I truly can’t answer that. I’ve been inventing stories in my head all of my life and this is just one that’s been floating around and popping up over the past few years.

Holly: Do you think you will have a follow up book to this novel or is it just a stand-alone novel?

Elizabeth Finn: It is definitely stand alone.

Holly: Why this genre?

Elizabeth Finn: Good question. Because love and erotic romance is thrilling and exciting to read, and when I pick up a book, aside from a text book which I’m forced to read, I always grab for the smut! It’s what I love to read, and so it’s what I love to write.

Holly: What is the hardest part of writing in your opinion?

Elizabeth Finn: Find time amidst the job, school and parenting. It’s balancing everything but still maintaining the pace that I want to be writing.

Holly: Can you tell us some of your latest news, what are your plans for 2012/2013?

Elizabeth Finn: Just more writing!! Other than my two additional releases for 2012 (Brother’s Keeper and Restoring Jordan) – which have kept me busy in edits, I’m finishing my first paranormal romance that will be submitted soon, so I’m really hoping for a spring release too… We’ll see.

Holly: Where do you see yourself at in five years—writing wise?

Elizabeth Finn: With a long backlist of successful erotic romance titles! I want to be successful and show readers that I’m worth following and won’t let them down.

Holly: Can you tell us a few do’s and don’ts for aspiring authors?

Elizabeth Finn: Don’t let discouragement stop you, no matter what, just write! Do keep after it even if feels daunting and overwhelming. With writing, I think you never really realize that you’re capable of doing it until you look down and realize it’s done.  It can feel so overwhelming, but you just have to plug away at it.

Holly: If you could live in one of your books or series’ which would you choose and why?

Elizabeth Finn: I love the world of Restoring Jordan. It’s a contemporary erotic romance that’s set in present time Chicago at an architectural and interior design firm. I love design, and it’s a personal passion of mine, so to have written these characters that I love into this world that I would love to experience, I really have to go with that.

Holly: If you are published with a publisher, how long did it take you to get published?

Elizabeth Finn: From the time I submitted my first manuscript, it has been three to four months. Liquid Silver Books is great about reviewing manuscripts quickly and getting a response back to you. The responses always show that they really have reviewed every last detail of the story, so the feedback is always relevant and well thought out.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Elizabeth Finn: Oh gosh… I’m excited to share my releases with you! I really hope you’ll check them out and fall in love with my characters as much as I have. I always welcome feedback and would love to hear from you, so please feel free to give me shout – you’ll hear back from me!

Holly: What is your favorite part of writing?

Elizabeth Finn: Finishing a manuscript. It’s an amazing feeling – like nothing else in the world… Then the next day hits, and your brain starts churning and figuring out what you want to write next.

Random Quickies!

Holly: Vampires or Werewolves?

Elizabeth Finn: Vampires, what can I say, I’m a Twi-hard fan.

Holly: Witches or Zombies?

Elizabeth Finn: Witches – have you ever met a sexy zombie.

Holly: Supernatural or Psych? (TV Shows)

Elizabeth Finn: I haven’t watched either, but Supernatural is on my must watch list – Thank goodness for Hulu Plus.

Holly: Ebook or hardcover/paperback?

Elizabeth Finn: Ebook – I’m in love with my Kindle

Holly: Favorite book?

Elizabeth Finn: This is impossible for a writer to respond to – it looks more like a long multi-page list…

Holly: Favorite genre to read?

Elizabeth Finn: Erotic Romance – I’ll read nearly any sub-genre of that.

Holly: Favorite movie?

Elizabeth Finn: To End All Wars, After the Wedding (Danish film), The Joy Luck Club… I could go on, but these are top fav’s!

Holly: Favorite book to movie?

Elizabeth Finn: Any one of the Harry Potter movie/books

Holly: Cats or dogs?

Elizabeth Finn: Dogs, but I love my geriatric twenty year old cat too.

 The Devil’s Pawn
by Elizabeth Finn

Once in the fitting room, Derek takes the chair again while I start to remove my clothes. I intentionally wore ugly, stretched-out, white cotton underwear that is entirely too big on me in the event he should be here. My mouth isn’t the only thing that can get me into trouble—my sarcasm knows no bounds when I’m unhappy.

As he sees the appalling excuse for an undergarment, his eyes move up to mine, narrowing darkly at my obvious defiance. I look coolly back at him before looking away dismissively. My anger and resentment of him from the humiliation he subjected me to the previous morning, not to mention his treatment of me over the past two weeks, have charged me into a bold, fiery bitch that no longer cares what retribution I might face. While my tongue usually gets me in trouble, today I decided to let my underwear do the talking.

Jacob enters with an armful of dresses for me to try on, and he cringes as he takes in my defiant granny panties, hated the world over by men, including, apparently, gay men.
He turns to Derek, and with a scrunched-up face, he worries out loud. “The dresses aren’t going to lay right over those…” He tosses a nod in my general direction.

Derek wastes no time at all reassuring Jacob and striking back at me. “No worries. Ashton was just taking them off. She won’t be wearing underwear anymore.”

I glare defiantly back at him as I drop the loose fabric to the floor. He returns the glare for a moment before letting his gaze travel down my body to my sex, and as it lands there, smoldering with heat, I turn abruptly from him, intentionally showing him my backside instead. I look to the mirror in front of me, and I catch his eyes flit away from me in annoyance. He worries his lip with his thumb and index finger as he contemplates, and the slightest of smirks crosses over his mouth. Jacob is standing by looking from one to the other of us, obviously wondering just exactly what he’s gotten himself in the middle of.

Derek finally looks back to Jacob. “Get on with it.”

I try on one after the other of the dresses. Some are perfect; Jacob pins in additional alterations in others. Derek sits by bored, only glancing up from his cell phone occasionally. One such occasion is when Jacob remarks that I’m “just not curvy enough for this one.”

Derek looks up to Jacob, but he shifts his eyes to mine before commenting, “Yes, well, if you can figure out some way of making her look female, you let me know.”

Jacob again lets his eyes pass between us, seeming to wonder all the while what he’s missing. As I hold Derek’s eyes with my own, my anger falters, and the pain that is behind my fury pushes through. I try to wrangle my tears into submission, but it’s no use. In defeat, first one, and then another spills from my eyes and slides down my cheeks. Jacob regards my state and excuses himself from the room.

I stand on the hemming block in the center of the room, refusing to look at Derek. But he’s looking at me, and as my hurt continues to work through my entire body, I let my tongue do what it does best. “Why do you hate me so much?”

He says nothing, but stands and moves to me. Reaching around behind me, he pulls the zipper of the dress down, and then, returning his hands to my shoulders, he pulls the straps down, exposing first my small breasts, and then the rest of my naked body as it falls to the floor.
He leans in to my ear and speaks. “You don’t know anything about me.” He then takes me by the hand and pulls me to stand in front of the mirror, and leaning to my ear once more as I watch him in the mirror, he speaks gently. “Lean forward and put your palms on the mirror.”
