What is in a name by Elizabeth Inglee-Richards #fmbbb

Today I am turning over Full Moon Bites to Elizabeth Inglee-Richards! :)

I write Urban Sports Fantasy with a strong romantic component. Part of me wants to laugh at that first sentence. I mean, we all know that geeks and jocks don’t mix; likewise urban fantasy and sports romance shouldn’t mix.

It is all my husband’s fault.

I’ve always been a fan of science fiction and fantasy. It has been a lifelong obsession. I shouldn’t say life long - my mother and father were both fans before I was born, so I learned my fandom in the womb.

When I met my husband, a hockey player, my mother gave me the following advice, “you have to learn hockey. You don’t have to like it; you just have to know it.”

I spent a lot of time learning the sport. I watched games, watched specials about the game and read books. I was surprised that when I learned the sport, I fell in love.

When I started writing it wasn’t surprising that hockey players started showing up in my stories. Not only was it something I loved and something I had researched, something that was a huge part of my husband’s life, but it was also
an excuse to have characters from all over the country and all over the world.

But I couldn’t give up the characters of the genre that I’ve read and watched all of my life. I still love my ghosts, angels, fairies, werewolves and magic users. It took some time before the two things merged. It took work, but not more than it took to learn the game.

It became something that is completely mine. Urban Sports Fantasy with a strong romantic component.

But I can’t help but think the sub-genre needs a better name.  Any suggestions?
