Author of the Week, Michael Loring, Interview

Michael Loring

Michael Loring was born in Bristol, Connecticut, but has lived in a variety of places such as Florida and Tennessee. He likes to think of himself as an amateur Lycanthropologist, studying werewolves ever since he was eight years old when he first saw An American Werewolf In London. He spent most of his life switching between home school and public school, always focusing on his passion of writing no matter what. His interest in writing was sparked in the second grade when his teacher encouraged him to write short stories for the class, earning him more than one award at school assemblies for Creative Writing. He currently resides back in his birthplace of Connecticut with a house full of women who like to drive him up the wall until he finishes his chores. Though they seem to avoid him during the night of the full moon for some unexplainable reason…

Holly: Hi Michael! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Michael Loring: Well, not much to say. I’m a nineteen year old guy who enjoys video games and boxing. I live in one of the smallest places in CT, Bristol, but even though I was born here I’ve moved around my whole life. I’ve lived in Florida, Tennessee, and a few other places I don’t remember because I was too young. Something else is that I’m a die-hard werewolf fanatic. It’s less than an obsession, but more than just an interest.

Holly: Can you tell us a little bit about your book Dehumanized?

Michael Loring: Dehumanized is a 522 page novel about scientifically created werewolves. These creatures are created due to an accident that happened in the late seventies, and the disease spreads throughout the world before it could be contained. Now, in an effort to maintain the “infected” governments have constructed camps to hold the people who “suffer” from what has been dubbed Lycanthropy. In these camps the subjects are brutally mistreated by the guards and by the scientists who are supposed to be helping them, and are locked in cages during the full moon. Ryan Zachery is the main character, and the novel is set in his perspective of the whole place. When an experiment allows him the ability to Change at will he concocts a plan to escape.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Michael Loring: A lot of people say the characters came first for them, but for me it really was the plot. It hit me one day the idea of werewolves being real and how people would react. My first idea was for them to be treated as second-class people, and for it to be mandatory for them to lock themselves up for the transformation, and if not then they’d be taken to a special prison for Lycanthropes. Then I thought, “What would a prison for werewolves be like?” And then Dehumanized was born!

Holly: You’re out demon hunting (because you’re that kind of awesome) and you come across one about to kill a young couple. He has not seen you yet; what is your first course of action?

Michael Loring: Distract him. Even if he’s looking at the couple, he’s still alert to the world around him. So if I can get him to place his attention on something else, thinking someone is coming from another direction, I could swoop in and take him by surprise at his flank.

Holly: Where can we purchase Dehumanized?

Michael Loring: At the moment it’s available on Amazon and on Smashswords. As for physical stores, we’re working on it.

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

Michael Loring: Just between you and me (and everyone reading this) I’m working on the sequel to Dehumanized, and a possible short-story collection. Though not everything is set in stone.

Holly: Can you tell us a little about your first publishing experience?

Michael Loring: It was wonderful. Bokheim Publishing was really the best choice for me, and I don’t regret for a second going with them. I was offered contracts from a few other places, but Bokheim was the best deal, plus I already found I enjoyed talking with them more than the others. They answered my questions, they didn’t try anything I didn’t agree with, and if I ever had any doubts they made sure to quell them. I’m very happy with how it all went.

Holly: How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?

Michael Loring: Quite a bit, I’d say. Not so much so that it’d be classified as a self-insertion, but enough for close friends to notice.

Holly: Is this the first novel you ever wrote or just the first published?

Michael Loring: It certainly isn’t my first attempt at a novel, probably my fifth, but it is definitely the first I’ve completed and published. I still have the first four chapters of another werewolf novel I started writing six years ago, and maybe someday I might get to finishing it.

Holly: What is your favorite part of writing?

Michael Loring: For me it’s the action scenes. I can easily get sucked into my writing, and when I’m writing a heart-pumping, fast paced fight scene I feel my own heart racing. It’s a rush, and I love it!

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Michael Loring: Mostly that I’m humbled that all of you are reading/have read my book. I worked very hard on it, and am beyond proud of it. A lot of people said to me that it’s harder for a teenager to write a book because the stereotype is that we have such short attention spans, but I proved them wrong by spending almost two years on Dehumanized. So thank you all, and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.

Random Quickies!

Holly: When do you prefer to read?

Michael Loring: At night, just before going to bed. People say you shouldn’t because it stimulates your brain and takes away from a full night sleep, but it’s when I’m most comfortable and when I can fully enjoy a book.

Holly: Vampires or Werewolves?

Michael Loring: Um…DUH! Werewolves baby!

Holly: Ebook or hardcover/paperback?

Michael Loring: I enjoy paperback the most.

Holly: Favorite book?

Michael Loring: Can I name a series? If so, my favorite is the Dexter novels by Jeff Lindsay.
