Author of the Week Xavier Edwards, Interview & #Giveaway! #FMBAuthor

Xavier Edwards (it might be his real name, no one is really sure) has spent his life surrounded by women, and writing.  Growing up in rural Australia before the age of the Internet and cable television, there was no better refuge than in books.  Any and all genres were absorbed as he and his three sisters grew up far from the hectic pace of the big smoke.  The wide expanse of open country and natural beauty have carried across to his writing, forming evocative backdrops to the sensual dance taking place in his stories.

After leaving school, Xavier joined the military and has served with honour in the Air Force, from leading brave men and women into combat to searching for, and finding, people lost at sea.  Joining him on this journey has been his wife, three daughters, and two cats.

Behind it all, Xavier continued to write.  Freelance journalism proved lucrative and gave him his first taste of a readership that found his writing engaging and evocative.  The imagery that continued to dance through his mind, would not suit this audience and when he did write it down and gave it to a small, trusted circle of readers, it had amazing results.  Quite by accident, he had discovered a knack for Erotica.

Holly: Hi Xavier! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Xavier Edwards: I hail from the wide brown land down under and have been writing in one form or another pretty much since I learned to write.  Growing up in the country I found a refuge in books and absorbed all sorts of genres and writing styles.  I was raised in a tight-knit family with three sisters and so grew up having to understand the female mind.  It was essential when trying to survive living with them when they were all teenagers.

Following secondary school, I joined the Royal Australian Air Force, serving with honour as active military aircrew, attended university, met my wife, got married, and started my own family.  It was while in a ground posting that I rediscovered my love of writing and nurtured it in private for a few years before being encouraged that other people would enjoy reading what I was writing.

It took a couple more years to build up the courage to actually publish, but here I am.  I’ve found a niche for my writing style in erotica and erotic romance and will probably spend the next few years writing within the genre and sub-genres.  I’m currently writing a lot of short stories but am starting to branch out into novellas and longer.

I’m currently living with my wife, three daughters, two cats, and fish in not-quite-rural Australia.

Holly: Which come first for you, the characters or the plot?

Xavier Edwards: With most of my writing it is a bit of an even split.  Some stories I
have an idea for a character and the story then flows around them.  Others, I have an idea for a plot line and find that characters come along to fit into it, making their own little place for fun.

Holly: Where can we purchase your books?

Xavier Edwards: Although an indie self-pub, my titles are available on Amazon, iTunes, Smashwords, Kobo, Google, All Romance Erotica, and are appearing via aggregation with some other major booksellers.

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2013?

Xavier Edwards: There are plenty of shorts that are bubbling away on my drafting table.  For stories less than 10,000 words I try to work around a fortnightly release cycle.  Because of the time involved with editing and proofreading, the pipeline extends back a good couple of months.  I am always trying to keep enough books flowing through the system to clear my backlog of short story ideas and keep supplying readers with the stories they love and adore.

Holly: Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

Xavier Edwards: I’m currently reading my way through the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett.  It’s allowing me to clear my mind from my own writing and refocus on what it is I want to achieve from it.

Holly: How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?

Xavier Edwards: Too much at times.  Re-reading what I have written it can be plainly obvious that a character or couple are drawn from either real life experience or those who I know.  The trick is to abstract it enough that the link can’t be made.

Holly: Who or what influenced your writing once you began?

Xavier Edwards: My wife.

Holly: Can you tell us a few do’s and don’ts for aspiring authors?

Xavier Edwards: Do write
Don’t listen to the naysayers
Do publish
Do develop a thick skin and be able to take criticism.

Holly: If you are self-published, why did you decide to take this route of publishing?

Xavier Edwards: When I was looking around at the options for getting an agent and a publisher, I couldn’t really find a lot that were suitable to my needs at the time.  One of the biggest things I realised I needed was to have a portfolio of works and the only way to do that was to self-pub.  Since then, using my business background, I have been quite happy to self-pub and interact with readers on a one-to-one level.  I haven’t ruled out an agent or a publisher in the future, but for now things are fine.  Some of my longer works might end up being routed through a major publisher, but that’s a future decision.

Holly: What is your favorite part of writing?

Xavier Edwards: Getting published and receiving fan mail / emails.  To know I have such a strong effect on readers across the globe is very gratifying and helps motivate me to write when I’m struggling with plots and characters.

Holly: What is your take on editing your work (pre-edits I suppose before it gets passed to an editor)—do you hate it? Is it a strong point for you?

Xavier Edwards: It gets really difficult trying to go back to something once it’s written and go over it with a critical eye.  Sometimes I find that I’m putting more and more content in and that the places that are weak or full of errors are being overlooked.

Random Quickies!

Xavier Edwards: Red

Holly: Cats or dogs?
