Interview & #Giveaway with A. Sangrey Black, author of If Wishes Were Shadows! #FMBBooks

Today I have an author interview with A. Sangrey Black and a short character interview with Calinda Byer, the heroine of IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS! Also read on on below for an excerpt and giveaway! :)

Holly: Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself? J

A. Sangrey Black: Sure! Thanks for having me here, Holly. It's a real thrill to be on Full Moon Bites!

My real name is Heather, and I write BDSM, dark erotica, paranormal, and romance as well as LGBT romance as A. Sangrey Black. I also write "mainstream" books in paranormal romance and urban fantasy as H.A. Fowler. IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS is my first title as A. Sangrey Black. While fiction is my first love, I also have to make some kind of living, so I also do freelance writing to keep body and soul together.

I live in the northernmost tundra of New York, near the Canadian border in the Adirondack Mountains -- I'm always thinking it's a great setting for shapeshifter stories. Besides exploring the natural beauty of my region, I'm a voracious reader, a semi-skilled yogini, a meditator, a fan of train travel and vegetarian cooking, and sort of obsessed with being owned by cats.

Also, I love vampires. Vampire lore has been an interest of mine since before it was an appropriate interest to have.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

A. Sangrey Black: I have to thank them, above and beyond anything else. Of course I wouldn't have a writing career if no one was reading my stories, but  more importantly, I would feel a lot more like a crazy person if I was writing this stuff only for myself! Sharing my madness and having other people enjoy it is 3/4 of the fun of being a writer, imo!

If anyone has any questions, comments, whatever, I would love to hear from them here, on other stops on my tour, or anytime at my blog, Twitter, or Facebook. I can chat all day about my books or others… or just vampires, paranormal romance, or urban fantasy in general.

Holly: What do you do when you are not writing?

A. Sangrey Black: Reading, yoga, meditation, cooking, staring into space (aka "brainstorming"), watching bad horror movies, playing with my cats, traveling when I can.

Holly: Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

A. Sangrey Black: If it's longer than a short novella, I HAVE to outline… otherwise I'll get halfway through and completely forget where I was headed. For short stories I might sketch out a few scenes, but mostly I let the writing flow.

Holly: Is there an author or book that influenced you or your writing in any way growing up or as an adult?

A. Sangrey Black: Anne Rice started it all for me. I've been a fanatic reader since I was very small, but my current dedication to the fanged genre definitely stems from reading INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE when I was WAY too young to be reading it! Laurell K. Hamilton, Diana Gabaldon, La Nora, and Sherrilyn Kenyon are others who have really been the foundations for my writing.

Holly: I know authors get asked this a lot but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?

A. Sangrey Black: I love this question. It's such a simple one, yet so profound (and I hate quoting Nike, but there it is) JUST DO IT. Seriously.

What kept me from writing for years was a mixture of fear and the sensation that I had no idea what I was doing. I think unfortunately my college creative writing teacher (I wish I could remember his name so I could say it in vain) quite literally told me that I sucked and that I should never write another word for anyone to read ever again -- this after years of just writing for joy. It took me well over a decade to put pen to paper again.

You know what? FORGET PEOPLE LIKE THAT. Forget your inner critic (he or she is a jerk), forget the outer critics. Just write. Forget what's in style, forget spelling, grammar, all the things you're supposed to and not supposed to do -- JUST WRITE. You can read all the books about craft that you want (and you should), attend seminars and classes, learn to dissect the kind of books you want to write, but unless you site down in front of a blank page and put words on it, nothing will ever happen.

You can smooth your edges and worry about being publishable later. At this moment? JUST WRITE. Don't let anybody tell you that you suck or that you shouldn't, or that you can't. YOU CAN, AND YOU SHOULD.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

A. Sangrey Black: It's hard to say with this story. I had a basic idea of both, but it was one of those stories that I just sat down and write in two or three sittings, then went back and filled in later. The characters changed, I cut out entire scenes from the plot, I re-wrote a lot of dialogue. So it was like a maelstrom of materials that I slowly mashed into a story. Luckily, I think it turned out fairly well.

Holly: Where can we purchase this book?

A. Sangrey Black: It's currently only available from the publisher, Cobblestone Press, but it should be available at Amazon, B&N, and other major outlets shortly.

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2012-2013?

A. Sangrey Black: Absolutely! While I'm taking some time off for the holidays, I do have a number of proverbial irons in the fire under both my pseudonyms, including a number of short stories and novellas, and at least two novels. The Genres range from m/m contemporary to more ménage from the SHADOWS series.

Holly: Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

A. Sangrey Black: I'm reading the hilarious FLIRTING WITH FANGS by Peg Pierson, the story of a vampire romance writer whose hero escapes from the fictional world into the "real" one -- shenanigans, naturally, ensue. I'm also reading the O COME ALL YE KINKY Anthology from Riptide Publishing -- awesome and truly kinky holiday stories, and the proceeds go to a very worthy domestic violence charity called the Domestic Violence Project of the National Leather Association Intl.

Holly: Can you tell us a little about your first publishing experience?

A. Sangrey Black: Oh, it was crazy! As H.A. Fowler, I sold THE VEIL as a serial to a new publisher… and they sadly went out of business very shortly before the story was supposed to go live! I was very lucky that Deanna Lee from Cobblestone Press asked to read the book and offered me a contract there. It was really awesome.

Holly: Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

A. Sangrey Black: I think this story IS all the genres! BDSM, Hardcore erotica, vampire, paranormal, ménage! I already write paranormal romance and urban fantasy, I'm working on m/m contemporary and paranormal. I go where the muses take me. But I admit I prefer paranormal stories, and I'll ALWAYS be a vampire girl.

Holly: Do you think you will have a follow up book to this novel or is it just a stand-alone novel?

A. Sangrey Black: This isn't a novel-length piece -- it's only a novelette. You can definitely read it alone, it gives you all the backstory you need and has an ending, BUT I do have other stories based in the same universe already planned. Some take place before IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS, some after.

Holly: Is there a genre that you love to read, and would like to write, but just cannot?

A. Sangrey Black: Scottish-based historical and time travel pieces. No, I actually want to be Diana Gabaldon and have created James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser, the best hero ever, and his awesome heroine, Claire. I couldn't possibly write in the genre, because that's what I'd end up trying to write, over and over again, and it would just not be a good thing. There's only one Diana Gabaldon, and only one Jamie Fraser.

Holly: What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?

A. Sangrey Black: "When I am dead, I hope it may be said, 'His sins were scarlet, but his books were read!'" ~ Hilaire Belloc

I don't know why, but I first read this one years ago, and it sort of fits my whole feeling about my life and my writing.

Holly: Can you tell us about your main character?

A. Sangrey Black: Calinda is a vivacious, powerful businesswoman with a kinky side who happens to be in love with a vampire, and has a private submissive side. After two years, she knows Adam, her lover, is the one for her, and she wants to join him in literal eternity. He lives what equates to a double life, however, and while she's aware that as a vampire, he indulges in a lot of… let's just say shenanigans… that she's not privy to, he insists that she has to experience at least some of it before he'll agree to turn her. Calinda really has to throw caution to the wind and trust him if she wants to keep him -- and since she's an adrenaline junkie, there's no question at all that she'll do it. She has a safe word, but the big question is whether what she sees will shock her enough to use it and let her lover go.

Random Quickies!

Holly: Why do you like hardcover/paperback more?

A. Sangrey Black: I love the feeling of a "real" book in my hands. I don't buy them much anymore, but when I do, it's like a special treat.

Holly: Right now in your line of site, how many books can you see?

A. Sangrey Black: Not counting on my eReader screen? 28

Holly: Do you own a laptop or desktop computer?

A. Sangrey Black: Laptop

Holly: If laptop what kind do you own ands would you recommend it to other authors?

A. Sangrey Black: It's an old Dell Inspiron 1501 -- almost 8 years old? I would definitely recommend it, because my baby has been through the ringer, and she's still going strong! (*knock on wood*)

Holly: What book are you reading today?

A. Sangrey Black: I'm actually reading a pile, but at the top is FLIRTING WITH FANGS by Peg Pierson.

Holly: Have you ever been out of the state where you live?

A. Sangrey Black: Oh, yes. Actually, I lived the first 17 years of my life in Connecticut (bless Newtown), and my family traveled all over the continental U.S., Canada, and Mexico. I added even more as an adult -- I followed the Grateful Dead around a bit when I was MUCH younger and crazier. LOL! I've never left North America, though.

Character Interview with Calinda Byer

Holly: What single thing or goal do you want most in life?

Calinda Byer: Honestly, I've achieved some of the biggest ones I set when I was young. I wanted to be successful in my own business. I wanted to have a great love, a home, and a family. Most of all, I wanted to find contentment. I've always been an adrenaline junkie, always restless. Since I've… joined with Adam, I have everything I need. Now when I travel, or try something new, it's because I want to. Because I'm curious, not because I feel like something is missing.

Holly: What do you fear most?

Calinda Byer: Fire. Beheading. Something happening to either of the guys. Angry mobs are pretty high on the list, but I don't think we're likely to run into one of those… here in America, anyway.

Holly: What’s your world like?

Calinda Byer: It's beautiful. Everything is sharper, smells better, feels amazing. My body can do things I never even imagined. I don't want to get too personal, but let's just say scenes in the playroom have been turned up to about a million, and they can go on for days. Being next to indestructible is fantastic! Being rich and powerful with two sexy lovers doesn't suck either.

Holly: Are you presently in love or do you hope to find someone special?

Calinda Byer: Like I said, I have two awesome lovers. They're so different, it's like having three relationships: one with each male, and one with all three of us together. It's indescribably fulfilling. Sometimes they fight over me, which, I hate to admit, is fun sometimes, even if it's not politically correct.

Holly: Sum up your life in the last few weeks in 150 words or less.

Calinda Byer: Preparing for Christmas. You wouldn't think that vampires did it, but WOW do we. George William is like a toddler about the whole thing. He even has to go get his picture taken with Santa… which is really weird, and if the Santa is sexy… let's just leave that alone. Basically, we picked out half a dozen trees for all over the country house, plus a few for the apartment, and went all out decorating. Thankfully, the outside is George William's job -- and it sort of looks like all the Christmas decorations in the universe out there. It's been a lot of fun.

Holly: Do you have any words of wisdom you think everyone should live by?

Calinda Byer: If you have a dream, go for it. Don't wait -- life is very, very short.

For most people, anyway.

Holly: If you could change one thing of your past would you? If so, what would it be and why?

Calinda Byer: Not a moment of it. Not a decision, not a step, nothing. If I did, I wouldn't be who I am or living the life I live now, and I wouldn't trade those for anything.

Title: If Wishes Were Shadows
Series: The Shadows Series, #1
Author: A. Sangrey Black
Genre: Paranormal, Erotica, Menage (m/m/f), BDSM, Vampire,
Publisher: Cobblestone Press
Words: Approx. 14,000

Book Description:

Calinda Byer is all assertiveness in her daytime life, but when it comes to the bedroom, she leaves her will at the door with her clothes. Her vampire Dom, Adam Straton, refuses to turn her until she has witnessed the darker side of immortality and the true depths of his sexuality -- including his male vampire lover.  A weekend at his country estate promises dark, twisted delights the likes of which Calinda could never have imagined. All she has to do is use the safe word, and she can return to the "normal" world alone. But will she?

“Are you certain you wish to go on?” he asked.

Calinda grinned in spite the horror-movie air and his grim demeanor and nodded. There were no shadows dark enough that would keep her from taking this journey with him. Nothing she wouldn’t do if he asked it of her, just as she knew he would, if he hadn’t already tasted all of her secrets.

Satisfied, Adam took her hand, pressed a small switch on the wall beside them, and led her down a narrow set of stone stairs, now illuminated by a dim red light. The stairway curved sharply, and he was guiding her down and down forever, circling into the depths of who knew what. She had learned from experience that the border between the heavenly and hellish was very fine indeed. She liked it that way.

Calinda’s heart thundered, her stomach fluttering with nerves, and she relished each sensation, tucking it away in her memory like some women might keep tickets to a show she’d attended with her lover. She had been an adrenaline junkie since the day she was born. Instead of drugs, she far preferred driving fast cars, jumping out of airplanes, and dating ancient, sadistic vampires than pills or needles. This occasion, with its mysteries and uncertainties, was better than any shot of pure heroin straight into her system, and the vampire she loved was giving it to her. He had become so many things to her in the two years they’d been together, and adrenaline dealer had been one of the greatest of them from the moment they met.

She remembered with an electric shiver through her system the first moment when she realized what he was, when she invited him home knowing what he could do to her. The biggest charge of her life. She gave his hand a squeeze in thanks. No, she had no difficulty in taking this journey. There was only one thing that could be at the bottom of this staircase, spiraling them into the depths of the earth together: the darkness he kept talking about, made manifest. The deepest shadows inside him. She was so eager to see it she was already wet.

Alexia enjoys the darker side of entertainment, including literature from the classic gothic style to the modern horror novel, erotica and romance that walks in the shadows off the beaten path. She loves horror movies both psychological and gory, and nurses a fascination for and dedication to the rights and practices of alternative lifestyles. What two or more adults do in the privacy of their dungeon is her... rather THEIR business. Vampires are her great fictional (or are they?) love, but all things that hunt the night, human or otherwise, forever capture her imagination and demand that she tell their stories. A denizen of the Adirondack Mountains of New York, there are plenty of legends, ghost stories, and creepy happenings in the deep forests and abandoned caves to keep her writing for the rest of her life.

A. Sangrey Black also writes more mainstream paranormal romance and urban fantasy as H.A. Fowler. She loves to hear from readers of both styles, so feel free to drop her a line or visit her blog or Facebook.
