Review: Because of You (Coming Home #1) by Jessica Scott #FMBBooks

Title: Because of You
Series: Coming Home #1
Author: Jessica Scott
Genre: Contemporary Romance,
Publisher: Loveswept

Format: Ebook
Length: 262 pages
Purchase: Amazon
Book Description:

From the war-torn streets of Baghdad to the bittersweet comforts of the home front, two wounded hearts navigate the battlefield of coming home from war in this explosive eBook original from newcomer Jessica Scott.

Keeping his men alive is all that matters to Sergeant First Class Shane Garrison. But meeting Jen St. James the night before his latest deployment makes Shane wonder if there’s more to life than war. He leaves for Iraq remembering a single kiss with a woman he’ll never see again—until a near fatal attack lands him back at home and in her care.

Jen has survived her own brush with death and endured its scars. And yet there’s a fire in Shane that makes Jen forget all about her past. He may be her patient, but when this warrior looks her in the eyes, she feels—for the first time in a long time—like a woman. Shane is too proud to ask for help, but for Jen, caring for him is more than a duty—it’s a need. And as Jen guides Shane through the fires of healing, she finds something she never expected—her deepest desire.

Wow. I have to say I did not really know what to expect with this one except that it was contemporary military romance as I just started reading (it has been months since I had read the book description) but Because of You surprised me—in good ways.

I will be honest; I do not have any real life knowledge about the war or what our soldiers go through. I have watched movies, shows and read books of course but very few present a real look on things in a fictional setting. Because of You did. Perhaps the reason why is because of author Jessica Scott’s background. She is a career army officer.

In Because of You when Shane is injured and sent home it is understandable that
he is upset and unsettled. He has always protected his men and now he has injured soldiers, men still back at war that needs him and he cannot even use the bathroom on his own. He protects and helps; not the other way around and now he has been put in a situation where he needs help.

This frustration leaks out onto Jen, his nurse, but she is understanding, having been there before. Jen tries to convince Shane that his injuries do not define who he is now through most of the book but when it comes down to it Jen realizes that she has never really let the same thinking apply to herself and her scars.

I really liked this—not only do we get the emotional journey of Jen and Shane, but also that of some of the other army wives. Because of You tugged at my heartstrings in all the best ways.

I would recommend Because of You to anyone who is looking for a great contemporary military romance read.
