Author of the Week, Debra Jayne East, Interview & #Giveaway!

Debra Jayne East was born the oldest of six girls, in Martinsville, Virginia. For as long as she could remember, she loved to keep journals, write poetry and short stories.

She researched her family tree and suddenly she understood why. Her distant relative, Violet Florence Martin was an Irish author, born in 1862, who co-wrote a series of novels with cousin Edith Somerville under the pen name of Martin Ross in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
After she encountered a near-death experience during a routine surgery, she realized her time had come to follow her heart and realize her calling to be a writer.

Her first novel, Radiance: Love after XOXO Publishing released Death in June of last year. Debra lives in North Carolina close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and enjoys photography, volunteering and spending time with her family. Her next book, Crimson Snow, her new paranormal romance, will be released later this year.

Holly: Hi Debra! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Debra Jayne East: Hello and thank you for having me today. I am a paranormal romance author and published my first book last year called Radiance: Love after Death with XOXO Publishing. I started my career a little late in life, I’m 56 but I’m loving it!

Holly: Can you tell us a little bit about your book Radiance: Love after Death?

Debra Jayne East: Forty-three year old Marena Jacobs woke up in the hospital recovering from her injuries. She had said goodbye to her happy life when her childhood sweetheart, Ben, had left her for another woman. Now, driving home from work, a terrible car accident nearly takes her life.

She wondered how
she even survived at all? The newspaper and town folks had called her a “miracle” woman. During a session of hypnosis, Marena discovers it was much more than that. Something happened in another realm of existence that she buries in her memory.

When David Martin finally shows up, parts of her past are beginning to unravel. Strangely enough, she finds herself attracted to this soft-spoken mysterious stranger. David is blind, but that’s not the issue. He’s also taken a vow of chastity. How do you love a man that was never supposed to fall in love at all?

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

Debra Jayne East: My novel, Radiance: Love after Death, was inspired by finding a white heart-shaped stone in the grass when I was out walking one day. Depressed from the break-up of my marriage, I had felt I was at the end of my rope. For an unknown reason, I reached down in the grass even though I couldn’t see anything visible. My hand pulled out the heart-stone as I call it and my life changed instantly. It seemed to say to me that even though your heart is broken and cracked like this stone, it’s still a heart and you can still love. I found that rock for a reason and its message seemed to resonate with me. It saved my life. So, I was inspired to weave it into a paranormal love story.

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

Debra Jayne East: Yes, it’s in final edits right as we speak. It’s called Crimson Snow.
Amera Roberts has lived all her life in a small cottage in the English countryside. Abandoned by her guardians, she finds a cryptic message that says that her husband to be will soon come. Her eighteenth birthday finds her nearly starving in the bitter winter months with almost no food and little firewood. While she is out in a snowstorm, a rider appears out of nowhere. Trying to get away from him, she stumbles to see a luminous sword land in the snow before her. She realizes her captor is someone she thought was a legend. Hope that whets your appetite for more!

Holly: Can you tell us a little about your first publishing experience?

Debra Jayne East: Yes, I was a novice to the writing world but Gina Cianfarani the publisher of XOXO Publishing and Penny Adams the acquisitions editor, both helped me develop a marketing plan and encouraged me to follow my dreams. They have been supportive and all my fellow XOXO authors have been like a family to me.

Holly: Why this genre(s)

Debra Jayne East: I always had an active imagination growing up. Every night when I would go to bed, I’d make up an adventure to make myself fall asleep. I still actually do that now. I go to sleep thinking about plots, different scenarios and what not.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Debra Jayne East: I appreciate all the wonderful reviews and support all of you have shown me for my writing. I’ve connected with many of you and it has been a joy hearing what you have to say. I’m feeling the love!

Holly: Cats or dogs?

Debra Jayne East: I love all animals but dogs are my favorite! I have a jack-a-poo, which is half Poodle and half Jack Russell. His name is Jacko and he is adorable. My other two dogs are Puppy, a black Labrador and a Chiweenie named Pix, who rules the roost. I always make a point to have dogs in my stories because they are so lovable.

Random Quickies!

Holly: Vampires or Werewolves?

Debra Jayne East: It’s always the vampires with me. Ann Rice really made vampires sexy and of course we have the Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyers. Edward has made us all swoon I’m afraid!

Holly: Favorite genre to read?

Debra Jayne East: I love paranormal and science fiction and sometimes I read biographies if they are especially relevant or uplifting.

Holly: Favorite movie?

Debra Jayne East: Braveheart was a very powerful love story and inspiration to me. William Wallace was a distant relative. It made it especially poignant to see his sacrifice and passion on screen.

Holly: Where can we purchase Radiance: Love after Death?

Debra Jayne East: XOXO Publishing

Marena Jacobs was not your typical heroine. She was in her forties, overweight, divorced and a workaholic. She never thought she would be looking for love again at her age. Driving home one rainy night to Eden, North Carolina, a near fatal car accident spirals her life into a nightmare or was it heaven? She lay dead on the sidewalk but her life was far from over. Marena had met the man of her dreams after she died.

Something happened in those seconds of time she passed from life to death. In the weeks ahead, she wakes up from a coma no longer overweight and haunted by what happened to her. She realizes her true love had been watching her all along. “Beware of strangers,” her grandma had always said. Now she knew why.
