Author of the Week, Sass Cadeaux, Interview & #Giveaway!

Throughout life I've always hide my true passion, which was writing stories about supernaturals.

Years after completing The COTS Series, my son and his friend found my stories hidden in our computer.

Those stories were in a file marked ‘Family Budget’. My son wanted to know if we could afford to give him an increase in his allowance. This was when my family first began pushing me to publish my stories.

In late 2010, I began to share my stories online. I hit a few bumps and crevices along the way. Never-the-less, I was amazed at how well my stories were embraced by others.

In August 2011, I self published the first of The COTS Series, and in January 2012, book three of the series was released.

Throughout it all, I continue to call my fans, “Friends I’ve yet to have the opportunity to meet.” It’s truly how I feel.

Brightest blessings,
Sass :)

A note from the author:

When I receive an email from my readers, I personally answer each and everyone of them. I feel that it is the least I can do. If my readers take the time to reach out to me, I will always reach back. It is my belief that my readers are friends I've yet to have the opportunity to meet. One day I will ... whether in a restaurant, at book signing or in a grocery store. I will always say hi back, give a hug and listen to what they have to say. I've received my share of good and bad emails, but no matter what it contains ... I am thankful for them thinking of me, and taking the time to reach out. From the bottom of my heart, I thank my readers for giving me the strength to chase my dreams!

Holly: Hi Sass Cadeaux! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Sass Cadeaux: For years, I was an underground writer.  Writing was (and is) my security blanket. I have always loved writing about supernaturals, the metaphysical and mystical worlds, and for the longest time it was frowned upon by most. My being Pagan did not help the situation; I was and still am often misunderstood.

Holly: Your life is an action/suspense novel; your stuck on a ship and it’s about to blow. If it was just you, you would jump overboard and get away fast, but there are a few people that were being held captive on the ship too. What do you do?

Sass Cadeaux: Well I certainly would jump! I would try my best to free the others. I am no rocket scientist and therefore, I know I would not be able to stop the ship from exploding, and there is no way I could live with myself knowing that I didn’t try to save others.

Holly: When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

Sass Cadeaux: I have been writing since I was child, it was my solace.

As for publishing, I never considered publishing my stories; I always shared them with my close friends, but publishing them … that was my son’s demand.

He and a friend found my stories by accident while I was at work. When I arrived home, he and his friend had printed off their favorite stories and insisted that I publish them. He was quite upset when found all my stories; he said it was as if his mother had a secret life.

Holly: Can you tell us a little bit about your book The Coalition of the Supernatural?

Sass Cadeaux: The Coalition of the Supernural is book one of an eleven book series. It sets the stage, and gives the readers an understanding of the world they are about to enter.

Alexia Crandell is the main character; she is the first human to become an Enforcer for the Coalition. The Enforcers are the strongest, fastest, and most deadly of each being. Usually they are the second or third in command to the leaders of each pack, cult, group, or coven.

Within 24 hours of meeting her partners, Alexia’s understanding of the world quickly flips upside down, and she finds herself fighting for her life, and the right to be with a man she is forbidden to love.

The series is filled with vampires, necromancers, barbarians and more, and this tale puts Alexia through a gauntlet of adventure, testing her trust, values and heart. While leading up to the realization of which path she must take.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Sass Cadeaux: The plot came first. All my characters are based off the qualities I see in others. For example, I refer to my youngest son as a necromancer. Not because he tries to raise the dead, but because he brings life into old songs when he sings or plays them on the guitar. I refer to my other son as vampire, it’s not because he sucks the life out of things, but quite the opposite. I envision vampires as passionate creatures. My son is exactly that. Weather he’s playing the guitar, a ball game or if he’s found that special person in his life. He always gives it his all.

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel/series?

Sass Cadeaux: The world around me inspired this series. I am naturally shy, and this story is how I see the world, with a few twists of course. And no … I’ve never met a shifter or zombie in real life, but that doesn’t mean that I haven’t witness someone who had the qualities of a shifter or have the personality of zombie. Have you ever sat in a room and
watch a person who one moment is friendly and smiling, and the next moment, they are pouncing on another for stepping on their foot or saying something out of turn? That is what inspired my shifters, seeing how quickly they shift from one form to another. It’s how I see the world and how the world inspires my stories.

Holly: You’re out demon hunting (because you’re that kind of awesome) and you come across one about to kill a young couple. He has not seen you yet; what is your first course of action?

Sass Cadeaux: Hmm now that’s a tough one! My first course of action would be to quickly rush up and kill it before it harms the couple. However, if there is a small chance that the demon could possible kill one of the two before I got there, I would make noise to gain its attention giving the couple the opportunity to run away. I mean … since I’m that kind of awesome, I don’t need the element of surprise to kill it. :)

Holly: Where can we purchase The Coalition of the Supernatural?

Sass Cadeaux: You can purchase any of my novels from my website – or directly from my author spotlight at lulu publishing –

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

Sass Cadeaux: I am currently working on The Secrets Series. This is a dark novella series, which involves skin-walkers. I am hoping to have the first released in late November 2012 and the second released in the spring of 2013.

Holly: Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

Sass Cadeaux: Chasing Amanda by Melissa Foster.

Judging by the cover and first few pages, I initially thought Chasing Amanda was a story about a mother searching for her lost child. That is not the case! It is about believing in yourself and never giving up when you know you can make a difference. Chasing Amanda is an inspiring story, almost as inspiring as the author! I recommend this story to everyone!

Holly: Can you tell us a little about your first publishing experience?

Sass Cadeaux: My first publishing experience was a whirlwind of many life lessons all rolled into a ball of confusion, fear and mistakes. Thankfully, I have amazing readers who pointed out the flaws and I quickly corrected them. Again, I cannot express how much I cherish my readers.

Holly: Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

Sass Cadeaux: Yes and no. As a writer, my mood will affect my stories. If I’m down or in a dark place, my stories will reflect it. I have written psychological thrillers and teen fiction in the past. They are hidden in a volt with the rest of my stories that I am not ready to share just yet.

Most of my stories have some form of supernaturals in them, but not all have romance.

Holly: How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?

Sass Cadeaux: From the people I see in public, to friends and yes – including me, I would say we make up a good fifty percent of my characters. It is the qualities or traits that I see which help inspire the characters.

I must admit … when my brother died back in 1996, I hit an all-time low. I wrote a story in which the main character was me. All of me! It was a therapeutic way of dealing with that time in my life. I have yet to share that story with anyone, including my husband or children.

Holly: Is this the first novel you ever wrote or just the first published?

Sass Cadeaux: This is the first self-published novel that I wrote. I have and still am a ghost writer. I began by writing stories as a personalized gift. Soon people began sharing their stories and more requests came in.

When I’m commissioned to write a book, or novella for another. I provide them with a questionnaire. This gives me a good glimpse into who they are and what they are like. I have written personalized novellas as Christmas gifts, wedding and many other special occasions.

Holly: Do you think you will have a follow up book to this novel or is it just a stand-alone novel?

Sass Cadeaux: Each story in The COTS Series stand alone, however, they are linked, and there are small hint in each one that guides you toward that final novel.

Holly: Why this genre(s)?

Sass Cadeaux: That is the ultimate questions! Everything seems to have a label. The COTS Series in categorized as paranormal romance. The series should not be limited to just that, there is humor, action, adventure and, so much more.

Holly: What is the hardest part of writing in your opinion?

Sass Cadeaux: The hardest part is stopping. Writing owns me, there are many times where I wake and have to jot down my dream. Where I should be outside or somewhere, but I can’t … because until I write it down it will continue to haunt me.

Holly: Can you tell us some of your latest news, what are your plans for 2012/2013?

Sass Cadeaux: 2012 has been an amazing year! Sweet Expression and The Secrets of Albion Falls will be released in late November; I will also be in Reno Nevada that month for the Secrets Series.

2013 is looking bright. I am hoping to release Resurrect My Heart in the spring, as well as book two of The Secrets Series.

Holly: Can you tell us a little about what attracted you to this genre?

Sass Cadeaux: I cannot say. I have been writing this genre since I was twelve. That was the first time I wrote about barbarians. It is how I saw my twin brothers. They were big, blunt and feared no one.

Holly: Can you tell us a few do’s and don’ts for aspiring authors?

Sass Cadeaux: Yes! Do your homework! Check out writers beware at and have a written agreement before sharing your stories with others. We all know that there are some bad apples out there, you need to protect yourself. Please check out the credentials of the editors you interview and I cannot stress this enough! Join some support groups like the world literary cafĂ©. There you will meet aspiring and existing authors who can share their knowledge with you. You will build friendships and learn valuable lessons on how to promote and protect your work without having to live through them first.

Holly: Is there a genre that you love to read, and would like to write, but just can not?

Sass Cadeaux: Dean Koontz is my favorite author! I have loved his books since he released Lightening. I wish I could write like him, but I can’t because I am Sass and I need to have supernaturals in my stories.

Holly: If you are self-published, why did you decide to take this route of publishing?

Sass Cadeaux: I admit that I did not try as hard as I could have to publish my story the traditional way. I only submitted to four publishers. I am Canadian, and my genre limits the amount of publishers who are willing to take on a new author (such as myself) without an agent or endorsement.

My readers and family pressed me forward. They gave me the confidence to self-publish. Once again, it all comes down to me being lucky enough to have such incredibly supportive readers.

Holly: What are some of the pro’s and con’s of self-publishing verses being published by a publisher in your opinion?

Sass Cadeaux: In my opinion, a self-published author wears many hats compared to a traditionally published author. We must be the author, publisher, cover designer and, we must interview and find an editor. We must format the story, notify the press and we are our own marketing team. There is also the web design, emails and social networking that we must do.  I would love to be able to just write, but as a self-published author, I can’t. I must wear all those hats and many more. So to me the con is not having the time that I would like to answer my emails and be able to interact with my readers as much as I’d like to.

Holly: What is your favorite part of writing?

Sass Cadeaux: My favorite part of writing is watching the story unfold in front of me. When I write, I see it as a movie in my mind. I am merely transcribing the movie as clearly as I can so I may share it with my friends.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Sass Cadeaux: I cherish every one of you! You get me, you understand and accept me for who I am. Some of you understand me better than my family does. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s the truth!

My readers don’t judge me for my choice of clothing, religious views or my looks. They accept me for who I am, and they choose to read my stories because they like the stories, not because they feel obligated due to family relations or what not. Every one of my readers hold a special part in my heart.

Holly: What is your take on editing your work (pre-edits I suppose before it gets passed to an editor)—do you hate it? Is it a strong point for you?

Sass Cadeaux: I don’t like it but it must be done. It’s easy to skip over the little mistakes because we already know the story. I always change the font and I read it backwards, it’s my silly way of trying to catch those mistakes.

Random Quickies!

Holly: When do you prefer to read?

Sass Cadeaux: Whenever I’m not writing.

Holly: Ebook or hardcover/paperback?

Sass Cadeaux: There is nothing better than holding a book in hand. I love paperback; I will read the ebook while I wait for the paperback to arrive.

Holly: Night or day?

Sass Cadeaux: Night

Holly: Dark Chocolate or Milk Chocolate?

Sass Cadeaux: Milk chocolate!

Awards and Recognition

On August 24, 2012 I appeared as a guest author at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto Ontario. Here is Fan Expo's announcement.

An in-depth look at the self-publishing and small press horror scenes. How to break in, get published and get your stories in front of readers. With authors Sass Cadeaux, Stephen Pearl, Karen Dales and Alan Draven Moderated by Monica S. Kuebler.

While at Fan Expo - I sat on a panel with Indie and small press authors. We introduced ourselves and shared a small blurb about what our stories entailed. We talked with readers, authors and aspiring authors. We talked about the process of publishing our books, and although this was not an award ... for an underground writer like me, it was a huge stepping stone. I cannot say that I hid my stories in fear, more-so it was due to my shy personality and lack of confidence. Being disabled has it's drawbacks, and one of them is having the public see your disability before they see the real you.

Fan Expo was for the fans and about the fan, and yet ... Fan Expo gave me the courage to finally step out from behind the safety of the computer screen and see the world the way it truly is. That is something that I will never forget. So although it wasn't an award, it was and is an accomplishment that will last me a lifetime.
