Guest Post: Backup of Sex in the Eighteenth Century by Sharon Cullen, author of The Notorious Lady Anne!
5:39 AM | Edit Post
Please help me welcome author Sharon Cullen to Full Moon Bites today with a guest post about sex scenes in different genre's! :) Sharon Cullen is author of The Notorious Lady Anne, coming out Feb. 11th 2013!
There are two universal
truths known to me. 1) Sex scenes are tough to write. 2) I don’t like writing
sex scenes.
I know, I know, I’m a
romance author, isn’t it all about the
sex?
As I tell all those people
who poo-poo romance, there are 300 pages of other things and maybe, maybe 50
pages of sex. So, no, it’s not all about the sex.
However, I’m a romance
author, so I understand that the sex really is a big part of writing a romance.
So write them I do. And I’ve written many, in as many different ways as you can
imagine. Standing up, sitting down, lying down, in a lake, in a car. The list
goes on and on.
Holly asked me to write
about the differences between sex in a historical versus a paranormal and/or a
contemporary. I really had to think about this, because, even though sex is
sex, there is a difference.
Paranormals deal with
shape
shifters, or other beings, and those character traits must be included in the
sex scene, just like they’re included in any other scene. However, what’s the
difference between a contemporary sex scene and a historical sex scene?
When I write these scenes I
always have Linda Howard’s 12 Steps to Intimacy close at hand. It’s an amazing
article based on her research and her years of writing romance that really
breaks down the sex act. What I love about the article is that it forces me to
slow the scene down, to concentrate on certain aspects, instead of rushing
through it.
For me, romance is all about
the emotion. There may be bad guys following you. You might be constricted to the
rules of your time period, but in the end, the basis of a romance is the
emotion. And so should the sex scene.
So for me, a paranormal, a
contemporary and a historical are all fundamentally the same. The sex scene
should drive the story forward as it’s driving the characters toward each
other. The emotions should not only be prevalent but the driving force behind
the scene.
The language might be
different, the location might be different, even the century might be
different, but fundamentally, the emotions are not.

From rising romance star Sharon Cullen comes a tale of the fiery passion between a noble naval officer and a female pirate that’s as tempestuous and as unpredictable as the sea.
Nicholas Addison, celebrated captain of the Blackwell Shipping Fleet, has agreed to take Mrs. Emmaline Sutherland aboard the Pride and ferry the raven-haired beauty across the Atlantic on what he imagines will be a routine trip. But when the ship is attacked by pirates, the seemingly innocent passenger is revealed to be none other than the infamous marauder Lady Anne, whose name strikes fear in the hearts of sailors everywhere—and whose seductive wiles commandeers Nicholas’s affections.
Lady Anne, a legend of the high seas, has spent the last eleven years plotting revenge against her father, the owner of Blackwell Shipping. She’s targeted the Pride in hopes of plundering its captain’s company secrets. But beneath her fierce courage and bitter determination, Anne has the delicate heart of a woman—a heart that cannot help falling for Nicholas. Now Anne must make a difficult choice: bring down Blackwell or surrender to love.
After earning a degree in
journalism from Ohio University , Sharon found the stories inside her head were more
interesting than what was going on in the world around her. Yet, it wasn’t
until years later that she decided to pursue her secret dream of writing a
romance novel. Since then she’s been published in romantic suspense, paranormal
romance and contemporary romance and historical romance.
