Interview with Christy Hayes, author of The Accidental Encore! #FMBAuthor

Toady I have author Christy Hayes here with an interview! You may remember we reviewed her book The Accidental Encore a little while back. Read on below to learn more about Christy, her books, upcoming works and more! :)

Holly: Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself? :)

Christy Hayes: I’m a mom and a writer from Atlanta, Georgia. My two teenagers keep me on my toes when I’m not pounding out contemporary romance stories on my computer. I love cable news, exercise, and my two dogs.

Holly: Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

Christy Hayes: I usually don’t do anything but get the story straight in my head, but I’ve just begun book two of my Golden Rule Outfitters series and I’m using Larry Brooks’ Story Engineering to get an outline on paper. I’m a little afraid it will kill my creative juices, but I’m excited to have a framework BEFORE I begin. I’ll let you know how it goes…

Holly: I know authors get asked this a lot but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?

Christy Hayes: Write a lot, read a lot, get people to read and critique your material. You need thick skin and lots of perseverance in this business.

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

Christy Hayes: My daughter’s piano teacher inspired The Accidental Encore, which you recently reviewed. She’s happily married, but she’s very pretty and watching her with the kids at the recital got me thinking. I was also interested in having a character online date, as that seems to be the method most people use today. I did some research, talked to a few people, and all I can say is, “Thank God I didn’t have to do that.” Perhaps that’s why my character doesn’t meet the love of her life online!

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2013?

Christy Hayes: I’m working on book 2 of my Golden Rule Outfitters series (Book 1, Mending the Line, is currently available). I hope to have both books 2 and 3 out this year and at least begin another single title.

Holly: Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

Christy Hayes: I just finished Colleen Hoover’s Hopeless. Wow! Really good. I’ve been reading the successful self-published books (mostly YA and New Adult) and this is one of the best I’ve read so far. YA tends to scare me because my kids are very close to this age. I have to keep reminding myself that it’s fiction.

Holly: Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

Christy Hayes: I’ve got two women’s fiction books that are what I call romantic women’s fiction. Contemporary romance has a much broader appeal. I used to love reading mysteries and thrillers, but they kind of freak me out now, so I think I’ll stay in my happy place of romance :)

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Christy Hayes: I love my readers! I’ve received so many wonderful emails from readers who have enjoyed my books and felt a real connection to my characters. For me, there’s no bigger compliment.

Holly: What is the hardest part of writing in your opinion?

Christy Hayes: The hardest part is starting a new story. Every time I finish a book I start to feel the insecurity creep in all over again. Once the first few chapters are on the page, I don’t look back, but staring at the first blank page is hard.

Random Quickies!

Holly: Favorite kind of chocolate?

Christy Hayes: Dark

Holly: Cats or dogs?

Christy Hayes: Dogs

Holly: Favorite book to movie?

Christy Hayes: When Harry Met Sally

Holly: Favorite book or author? Yeah we know it’s hard to choose! ;)

Christy Hayes: I LOVE Nora Roberts

Holly: Do you own a laptop or desktop computer?

Christy Hayes: Both

Holly: If laptop what kind do you own and would you recommend it to other authors?

Christy Hayes: My husband just got me the small MAC Airbook. I love it.

My husband and I live outside Atlanta, Georgia, with our two children and two dogs. I have a journalism degree from the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!) and I’m a member of Romance Writers of America and the Women’s Fiction Chapter of Romance Writers of America. I’ve been writing seriously since 2004 and made the decision to indie publish in 2011.

I write romance and romantic women’s fiction from my little basement office in the South. I’ve cooked up all kinds of trouble for my flawed characters when I’m not driving my kids to one sporting event or another or walking my pesky rescue mutts through the neighborhood.

Please note that a portion of the proceeds from each book sold will be donated to charity.
