Interview with Antoinette M-, author of The Vampire's Gallery! #FMBAuthor

Holly: Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Antoinette M-: Hello, may name is Antoinette M—, author of The Vampire’s Gallery. I worked as a scientist for about five years, and then I quit to write full time. My first book was a fantasy, which I wrote while I was still working. It was so dirty, I just started writing smut.

Holly: Is there an author or book that influenced you or your writing in any way growing up or as an adult?

Antoinette M-: The Garden of Eden by Hemingway. It was my first dirty book, and once I realized how racy the classics can be, I read a lot of them. Ancient Evenings by Norman Mailer was another of my favorites.

Holly: I know authors get asked this a lot but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?

Antoinette M-: Writing something awful doesn’t mean you’re an awful writer. We all write things that are terrible. Remember that.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Antoinette M-: The characters, I always start with the characters.

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

Antoinette M-: Louis XIV provided some inspiration for Jamie, especially Louis’s later years when he settled down with his wife Madame de Maintenon. More than anything, I wanted to write a story about a really ancient vampire. How does he manage to survive thousands of years? What’s important to him, what isn’t, and what slips by that he doesn’t even notice?

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

Antoinette M-: Always. I’m going to start editing the sequel soon. I’ve got a few other stories too. I love writing.

Holly: Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

Antoinette M-: The Rose by Jennifer Potter, which is a
giant book with all these beautiful pictures of roses. Also, Elite Squad by Soares, Batista, and Pimentel, which is good, but brutal. I wish I could read it in the original language.

Holly: Do you think you will have a follow up book to this novel or is it just a stand-alone novel?

Antoinette M-: I would say there are at least two more books in this series, maybe three.

Holly: Why this genre(s)?

Antoinette M-: Sex is really interesting. Whenever you take a closer look at history, there’s just so much sex. Cleopatra comes to mind, but even someone like Elizabeth I, the virgin queen, used sex to define herself.

Holly: Is there a genre that you love to read, and would like to write, but just cannot?

Antoinette M-: I like horror, but I have too much of a sense of humor to really pull it off. Even when I’m trying to write something that’s sinister, jokes sneak in.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Antoinette M-: Thank you! It’s exciting to have people read your book. I tried to keep the sex fresh and fun.

Holly: What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?

Antoinette M-: We were not ignorant of perspective. We deliberately ignored it. A flat world was ours and everything in it had a name once and all the names were ours once. With perspective, names escape from the paper and scatter into the minds of men so they can never be held down again.
William S. Burroughs
To me, this quote is about the power of language. Writers, regardless of what they’re writing, are “scattering names”. Even if we’re writing to titillate you, we’re thinking of new things and sharing.

Holly: Do you read more than you write?

Antoinette M-: Yes.

Holly: Favorite movie?

Antoinette M-: Tekkon Kinkreet

Holly: Hardback/Paperback or eReader?

Antoinette M-: Both!

Holly: Favorite color?

Antoinette M-: Orange.

Holly: How many paperback/hardcover books do you own?

Antoinette M-: A lot. I love being a writer—it’s a great excuse to buy more books.

Holly: Right now in your line of site, how many books can you see?

Antoinette M-: Thirty or forty, maybe more.

The Vampire's Gallery
Antoinette M-

Unlucky. Unloved. And now undead.

Maria hasn’t been touched in years and sustains herself on her friends’ sexual encounters. She's coerced into trying out internet dating, and she soon attracts the attention of a stud named Jamie. When he invites her out for a beer, she accepts, her mind focused on the one thing she wants—a warm body pressed against hers. Jamie makes her laugh and she invites him in, never guessing that he’s doesn’t want to bed her, but drink her.

The Vampire’s Gallery follows Maria as she leaves one life of dull city apartments for another of sex, sensation, and blood. She rattles the stilted hierarchy of Jamie's home when she makes the ancient, distant vampire feel again.

But what about the vampires that surround Jamie? Who are her enemies, who are her friends, who’s just pretending?

Antoinette M— had a grubby childhood in southern New Hampshire. She has always maintained that “cranky” and “Yankee” rhyme for a reason. Today, Antoinette writes smut. She lives in a crooked little house, with an awesome husband, and a very large dog. She enjoys reversing gender roles, playing with old stereotypes, and is currently working on the next installment of her series, The Vampire's Gallery.
