Interview with Deena Remiel, author of Elixxir! #FMBAuthor

Please join us today for an interview with Deena Remiel, author of Elixxir! :)

Holly: When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

Deena Remiel: I moved out to Arizona about six years ago. I was sitting in the library, with its floor to ceiling windows, looking out over the Superstition Mountains, and I started ruminating over its name. Then I wondered what could happen at the top of those mountains. I thought, why not write a story about it? And this fabulous group of angels came to mind, and then all the possible stories and missions they could go on, so a story turned into a novel and a series. I didn’t think for one minute to be afraid of trying to get it published. It was all very exciting and pie in the sky to me. I thought it would be a great way to satisfy my creativity.

Holly: Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

Deena Remiel: I start with the setting. I must know where I am. Then I move to the kind of characters I want and build up their biographical sketches. Then I work on a loose plot and write a very brief synopsis, like a long paragraph, of what I want to happen beginning to end. Then I put it all aside and write.

Holly: Can you tell us a little about the first two books in your Brethren series?

Deena Remiel: TRINITY is the first book I wrote. School teacher and single mom, Emma Livingston, has been through hell--and back so she thinks. While dealing with the night terrors and active imagination of her five-year old daughter, Hannah, she attempts to lead a normal life. That is, until the demon from those nightmares pays her a visit, too, and threatens both of their lives. Desperate, she reaches out for help--and finds Michael waiting.

Michael D'Angelo is known to everyone in Prophet's Point,
Arizona, as their loving elementary school principal. But to The Brethren, he is the most powerful Protector. Immortal and angelic does not mean he's without doubts or fears, as protecting Emma and Hannah from Evil tests his ability to fight his tortured past.

As the Trinity is formed, ancient secrets are revealed and faith is tested. When a prophecy is exposed, Hannah becomes the main target and Emma wonders if a normal life will ever be possible again.

RELIC is the second book in the series. Raphael, a Brethren Savior, an angel with a forgotten past, has lost his power to heal and is on a self-imposed guilt trip to get it back. If he can’t, his tour of eternal duty as Brethren Savior will be revoked. On his journey, he winds up enmeshed in a web of attempted murder and resurrection, all thanks to a woman he’s only seen in a photograph and by chance on an Arizona desert hiking trail.

Serena Sikes is a wanted woman. Desired by “undesirables” for a gift her brother gave her—a stolen relic with suspected healing powers. Hunted down in the
Arizona desert and left for dead, she is found by none other than the angel who cannot heal.

Raphael and Serena are inexorably bound together, for locked deep within the relic’s heart had lived the soul of his long lost wife. Now, it resides inside Serena. Evil lurks around every corner as Raphael tries to keep both Serena and his dead wife’s soul alive and lustful temptation at bay.

Three souls bound together by an ancient relic, bound by a timeless gift, and bound by a love that is eternal.

Holly: What was your inspiration for the world in which the Brethren series is set?

Deena Remiel: I love the idea of
having angels living among us and we have no clue. It’s comforting in some ways to think that help is right around the corner when we truly need it. I also am inspired by stories of people doing good things for each other and also doing evil. So, these angels have regular jobs and lives until they are called upon for help. That’s why I consider them superheroes. They are regular folk most of the time, and heroes when necessary, all for the sake of protecting and saving the human race from evil. One very important theme in all of my writing is that Good ALWAYS wins over Evil, even though there’s a lot of hell to go through first.

Holly: Can you tell us a little about book three, Elixxir?

Deena Remiel: Sure! Elixxir is the story of Nathanael and Callie, two wounded, broken, and vulnerable souls who find a safe haven in each other. For twenty years she’s been living a lie as Callie Worthington, hiding from the monsters who brutally murdered her parents for possession of the Elixxir of Life. Unsuccessful before, their killers have found her and will stop at nothing to acquire the Elixxir. And see her dead.

Nathanael has a couple of secrets, too. A nasty one in particular blurs the line separating Good from Evil. As an immortal Brethren Warrior, though, he must retrieve the Elixxir before it falls into the wrong hands. Just how he’s going to get it out of Callie’s is the big question.

Holly: Where can we purchase this book?

Deena Remiel: ELIXXIR is available at all eBook retailers. In particular: AMAZON, B&N, ALLROMANCEEBOOKS, DECADENTPUBLISHING.COM, and more!

Holly: How many books do you have planned for the Brethren Series?

Deena Remiel: I have three right now  and at least three more in the planning stages.

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2013?

Deena Remiel: It’s going to take a bit for the fourth book to be written in this series, so if folks are looking for more from me, they can pick up my other series, The Book Waitress. I also have a short story series in the TEASE line of Decadent Publishing coming out soon. So, there’s a lot to read!

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Deena Remiel: I’d like to thank my readers for their enthusiastic support and love of our angels. If new readers would like to become a part of the Sinners and Saints fan club, all they have to do is like our facebook fan page: facebook.com/DeenaRemielAuthor

Holly: What is your favorite part of writing?

Deena Remiel: I love writing the last sentence. Overall, though, I love bringing joy and excitement to readers through my stories. I love hearing how my words affect people in positive ways.

Random Quickies!

Holly: Favorite book to movie?

Deena Remiel: Princess Bride

Holly: Favorite book or author? Yeah we know it can be hard to choose! ;)

Deena Remiel: Favorite book AND author: Acheron, by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Holly: Hardback/Paperback or eReader?

Deena Remiel: Tough choice. I love my eReader because it’s light and travelworthy. I love paperback because I love the smell of the paper. I also like to look back at the cover frequently.

Holly: What book are you reading today?

Deena Remiel: I just finished Blood and Fire by Shannon McKenna, and now I’m steeped in edits and more writing. What’s next? Probably a historical romance. Any recommendations?

Callie has secrets, too many to count.

Tempers flare as Callie and Nathanael reach out to each other with their own hidden agendas. She needs his protection. He needs the Elixxir. Will their fiery passion lead to lasting love, or will their web of intrigue ultimately destroy them both?

Secrets, lies, and love’s loyalties tested. What price for immortality? What price for love?

And now for a SPECIAL, NEVER BEFORE SEEN excerpt from ELIXXIR:

Working out should have done him well, but instead, after talking with Joe, he bristled like a caged lion all over again. Two by two he took the stairs all the way up twenty-two flights. When he reached the door to his room, he slid the key in the lock and quietly opened the door. A shower was definitely called for at this point, so he entered the bathroom, stripped, and started the water running. When the steam enveloped the room, he stepped into the hot rain falling from the ceiling, closed his eyes, and wondered how long he’d been fooling himself. Every time he killed in the name of Brethren justice, Satan sneaked into his subconscious and tested his resolve, filling him with the sense of infinite power. And he reveled in it! But like a drug, the euphoria lingered only so long, and each time, it lessened in duration.
Frustration overwhelmed him and he banged a fist against the shower wall, letting the steady stream pummel his already pounding head. Why had E.L. refused to help him? Hadn’t asking him what he should do months ago been enough proof that he wanted to stay Brethren? Did he have to test his resolve now as well?
Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he saw the shower curtain undulate and heard the door click. Damn, he hadn’t heard it open!
“Nate? Are you okay?” Callie’s voice slid seductively in between the pelting water music.
He wasn’t.
And he couldn’t lie. He wouldn’t. Not to her.
“No, I’m not.”
She moved the curtain aside, but he refused to turn around, choosing to remain leaning against the back wall. He sensed her step in behind him and rest a gentle hand on his back.
“What are you doing?” His voice shook with restraint.
“I’m here to see what’s wrong. Nathanael, tell me what’s wrong.”
The insistent tone broke through his crumbling defenses. He reached behind him, grasped her hands, and pulled her close to wrap her body around his like a safety shroud. He held on, as though he would fall into an abyss otherwise.
“Jesus!” As she spoke, she clutched him even tighter. “What can I do? Just tell me. What?”
“Tell me I’m good.”
He waited. The crashing of water against his shoulders filled the space meant to reassure him of his worth. Even should she reply so, would he believe? Satan had been messing with him for so long now, he didn’t believe in much of anything anymore.

It was the mystique of Arizona’s history and landscape that called to Deena and catapulted her career as an author. When she’s not writing romance novels and poetry in the wee, small hours of the morning or in the deep, dark of night, Deena teaches language arts to middle school students. She currently lives in Gilbert with her husband and two children, but New Jersey will always tug at her heartstrings. She loves connecting with her fans, so find her at deenaremiel.com.
