Interview with Dilys J. Carnie, author of Her Passionate Protector! #FMBAuthor

Holly: Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself? :)

Dilys J. Carnie: Hello, thank you for having me.

I’m just an everyday kinda girl I live on the Island of Anglesey in Wales U.K. I have two grown up children who still live at home…I think that’s because neither of them knows how to cook or how to use the washing machine!
My dad died four years ago which was what started me writing again. I wrote a short story for our local newspaper about how his death affected me and I came second only losing out to first place by one vote.
I wrote for about two years and took each rejection on the chin not wanting to give up my dream of having a book published. However I have to say there were many days when I just wanted to give up but I’m glad to say that I didn’t and here I am a published author.
Annie Seaton( my editor) played a large part in my road to being published, without her patience and smart editing I have no doubt in my mind that I would still be a struggling writer.
I am an avid health freak, a vegetarian who is manic about working out in the gym and doing Pilates classes. I love clothes, makeup, having my nails and hair done. I’m just a girl’s girl.

Holly: What do you do when you are not writing?

Dilys J. Carnie: When I’m not writing which when I’m on a deadline is very rare I like to go to the gym, I love doing Pilates I find it gives me an inner peace and de-stresses me.

Holly: Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

Dilys J. Carnie: Usually I have an idea of what I’m going to write and I do a lot of research to begin with and I might jot a few things down but generally I like my characters to take me on their journey.

Holly: Is there an author or book that influenced you or your writing in any way growing up or as an adult?

Dilys J. Carnie: I have always been a varied reader; and I loved reading Mills & Boon as a teenager. I guess if I had to pick a favorite author of the moment it would be Nora Roberts.

Holly: How do you market your book(s)?

Dilys J. Carnie: I’m still learning at the moment, I do all the social networking, word of mouth and I find my blog draws a great deal of attention. I have to say I found it much easier to write the book than I have marketing it.

Holly: Can you tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published?

Dilys J. Carnie: The worst part of writing is finishing your story sending it out and getting rejections after rejection it’s a real stinger on your confidence. I found that I would wake up several times a night just to check my in box. I had several rejections before Secret Cravings publishing picked up on my manuscript…It was the greatest feeling in the world.

Holly: I know authors get asked this a lot but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?

Dilys J. Carnie: Never give up, if you really want it use each rejection as a learning curve and always send your work in polished to the very core. Get a friend to look it over or a writing group it’s amazing what they see that you don’t.

Holly: When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

Dilys J. Carnie: When my dad was dyeing we had many discussions while I looked after him and one of those was all the things he had wanted to do in his life but hadn’t. When he died I did two things I became a vegetarian and I sat down and wrote my first story which came second in a writing competition. I had always loved to write and thought that I couldn’t do it, but for my dad and his regrets I pushed myself and I did it and I guess he’s looking down on me now and saying ‘I told you so’.

Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Dilys J. Carnie: Plot

Holly: What was the inspiration for this novel?

Dilys J. Carnie: My inspiration for this book was everyday life, I wanted to write about something that does exist, and unfortunately violence is a part of the world we live especially for woman but for me putting the happy ever after means that there is hope of surviving it…there is hope of getting through to the light at the end of the tunnel.

Holly: Can we expect more novels from you in 2013?

Dilys J. Carnie: We certainly can, I signed a
four book deal with Secret Cravings Publishing. Tentative dates are: May 1st 2013, August 2nd 2013, November 3rd 2013 and February 4th 2014

Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?

Dilys J. Carnie: Yes I’m working on the final book of The Fitzgerald Brothers series.

Holly: Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

Dilys J. Carnie: At the moment I haven’t much time to read but I have plenty waiting on my TBR pile.

Holly: Can you tell us a little about your first publishing experience?

Dilys J. Carnie: It has been baffling, confusing, exciting and I have loved every minute of it.

Holly: Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

Dilys J. Carnie: Never say never I’m open to trying anything.

Holly: How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?

Dilys J. Carnie: Oh my goodness, people I know, little bits of them feature in all my books. Life is the greatest canvas board.

Holly: Do you think you will have a follow up book to this novel or is it just a stand-alone novel?

Dilys J. Carnie: There is room to do a follow up book and I might just do a story on Nic and Simon’s romance, it would be a feisty journey.

Holly: Why this genre(s)?

Dilys J. Carnie: Easy I love happy endings.

Holly: What is the hardest part of writing in your opinion?

Dilys J. Carnie: Promoting…argg it’s a nightmare.

Holly: Can you tell us some of your latest news?

Dilys J. Carnie: Four books contracted and being published has got to be the highlight of 2013. And I booked my months stay in North Carolina to stay with my friend and we are spending a week at the beach where I swim in the Atlantic Ocean.

Holly: Where do you see yourself at in five years—writing wise?

Dilys J. Carnie: Still pounding the keys with a few best sellers…yes that would be nice.

Holly: Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Dilys J. Carnie: Thank you!

Holly: Can you tell us a few do’s and don’ts for aspiring authors?

Dilys J. Carnie: Always send your work in absolutely to the letter in which the publishers require it. And edit, edit, edit.

Random Quickies!

Holly: Cats or dogs?

Dilys J. Carnie: Dogs

Holly: Favorite move?

Dilys J. Carnie: The Day After Tomorrow

Holly: Hardback/Paperback or eReader?

Dilys J. Carnie: All three…sorry I can’t choose

Holly: Why do you like eReaders?

Dilys J. Carnie: Convenient when you are traveling

Holly: Why do you like hardcover/paperback?

Dilys J. Carnie: I like to smell the paper of a brand new novel and feel the pages as I turn them

Holly: How many paperback/hardcover books do you own?

Dilys J. Carnie: At least two thousand if not more

Holly: Right now in your line of site, how many books can you see?

Dilys J. Carnie: Oh my goodness at least three hundreds

Holly: Do you own a laptop or desktop computer?

Dilys J. Carnie: Both

Holly: If laptop what kind do you own and would you recommend it to other authors?

Dilys J. Carnie: HP and yes I would recommend it.

Holly: Have you ever been out of the state where you live?

Dilys J. Carnie: Yes I like to travel

When Lucy meets Alex the owner of the new company her cleaning business has just picked up a contract for, her hard won self-preservation and quiet life flies out the window.
Smoldering heat ignites every time Alex comes near her.
He is confused by this independent, yet vulnerable woman and when her ex-husband returns, determined to hurt her, Alex fights for her life and their love.

“Give her time, Alex. She’s been through a lot.” The pressure of his friend’s hand was reassuring on his shoulder and he just nodded. It would take more than time. It was going to be one hell of an uphill battle.
At that point, Jack came wandering into the kitchen, rubbing himself around Alex’s legs.
“And what do you want, little one?” Alex picked up the cat, its purring hum showing he had settled down quite easily.
“Do you want some cream, buddy?” He poured some into a saucer and put it down, watching as the cat lapped greedily.
“Let’s take the coffee out now.” Alex picked up the try and followed Simon.
After they went out on to the balcony, and he set the tray of cups and coffee on the table, Nic got up from where she had been sitting with Lucy on the wicker sofa and put her arms around Simon.
Alex looked over at Lucy, her body hunched, the pain and sadness evident in her chocolate brown eyes.

I’m just an everyday kinda girl and I have lived on the Island of Anglesey in North Wales for thirty nine years. I have two grown up children Emma is a teacher and Christopher is involved in the family commercial business. I have three sisters; two of them live close by as does my mum.

If I am not in my office pounding the keys I’m sitting in my favourite chair reading on my new Kindle.
