Holly: Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself? :)
Tessa Bailey: My name is Tessa Bailey. I’m 29-years-old. And I’m a hummus addict. I live in
with my husband and young daughter. Protecting
What’s His is my first published work :) Brooklyn, New York
Holly: What do you do when you are not writing?
Tessa Bailey: I’m with my baby girl or working part-time for my father’s construction company. I love a good night out with my friends in
. Cocktails are usually involved. Manhattan
Holly: Can you tell us, in your own words, a little about your book?
Tessa Bailey: “To steal or not to steal?” is the opening line of the book. Ginger, our mostly fearless heroine is deciding whether or not to steal fifty-thousand dollars from her passed-out stripper mother. Ultimately, she decides to take the cash (and her little sister, Willa) on the run to
. She thinks she’s gotten away with it until she
meets homicide cop and sexy new neighbor, Lieutenant Derek Tyler. Chicago
Holly: Can you tell us about your main character?
Tessa Bailey: Ginger: A bombshell who doesn’t take anyone’s shit. She grew up rough in
, bartending to support herself and her sister. She’s
been presented with an opportunity to make a better life and although she’s an
honest, hard-working person, she decides to take it. Nashville
Derek: A sharp, possessive, potty-mouthed, alpha-male who falls for Ginger the second he sees her and never wavers in his pursuit of her.
Holly: Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?
Tessa Bailey: In this case, Ginger came to me first and I built the plot around her. It works this way for me most of the time. Characters are what we remember when a book ends.
Holly: Are you working on anything at the moment?
Tessa Bailey: Yes, quite a lot. Since Protecting What’s His released, I’ve turned in #2 in the Line of Duty series, which is about a hot shot hostage negotiator who falls for his mentor’s daughter. I’ve also written a novella and planning on starting a new project this week!
Holly: How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?
Tessa Bailey: A lot – in terms of the female characters. My girlfriends inspire a lot of the banter between girls. Even some of the situations/predicaments my characters find themselves in have happened to my friends in real life.
Holly: If you could live in the world you have created, would you? If no, why not?
Tessa Bailey: A world where sexy, emotionally complicated alpha-males walk around shirtless and I eat chocolate all day? Try and stop me!
Holly: Pepsi or coke?
Tessa Bailey: Coke
Holly: Favorite kind of chocolate?
Tessa Bailey: Milk chocolate with almonds
Holly: Cats or dogs?
Tessa Bailey: Big ‘ol slobbery dogs
Holly: Do you read more than you write?
Tessa Bailey: No – I write way more.
