Bad Movie, Good People
By Annabeth Leong
Thanks so much for hosting
me today!
It's easy to dismiss a bad
movie. I see it in the theater, I think it's poorly done, and I quickly forget
about it. When I was in college, however, my roommate convinced me to see a
mediocre movie with her in the theater fourteen times (she was personally
invested in the movie, and I was nice).
A funny thing happened after
many viewings. The whole thing started to seem better. I came to appreciate the
efforts of the supporting actors, the set designers, and the costume designers.
At some point, I started thinking about how much money, time, and labor go into
every movie, regardless of how it's received. I got interested in how it would
feel to work on a movie knowing it's not the best.
The characters in my
Rubenesque erotic romance, Design and Scandal, are tethered to an iffy science
fiction movie for various reasons. They have a feeling they won't be proud of
the final product. I enjoyed exploring what's driving each of them—why they are
stuck there, and what they are going to do about it.
Movie stars may be idolized
when they're doing well, but they also face intense public criticism and
harassment when they're not. It seems to me that being a Hollywood A-lister probably feels a bit like dangling above a snake pit. In a
circumstance like that, true romantic connections must come few and far
between. After all, who can be trusted?
In Design and Scandal, my
characters are all trying to figure out what this bad science fiction movie
means for their careers. I wanted the low point of being tied to a bad project
to serve as a catalyst for them, to make each of them go after their true
desires and embody more authentic selves.

Costume designer Kahala Lin didn’t get into her line of work to make clothes for tiny models. She dreams of creating high-fashion masterpieces for BBWs such as herself. When she’s hired to work on costumes for the science fiction movie Laser Sentinel, she passes up the opportunity to dress the film’s heroine and ends up with the hardest job on set—pleasing the demanding and devastatingly handsome star, James Corwin.
James is one of Hollywood’s best known actors, but he’s in trouble when he’s forced into working on this dud of a movie. James can’t relax and enjoy the shoot on Hawaii’s black sand beaches. He needs to prevent this film from becoming an embarrassment, starting with making sure he’s not shot wearing nothing but spandex, a headdress and a ray gun. His collaboration with the new costume designer starts out promising, but soon he’s so busy taking off her clothes that he’s hardly thinking about what he’ll wear at all.
The press, however, discovers their relationship almost before it begins, and the resulting scandal threatens both their livelihoods and James’ chances with Kahala.

James
shrugged. He glanced away from her for the first time that night, taking a long
look over his shoulder at the darkening ocean. “Maybe you’re right,” he said
finally. “An actor should shut up and act.”
“Hey.”
Kahala nudged him under the
table with her toe, trying to ignore the somersault her stomach performed at the mention of his co-star’s name. “I don’t know if I’d go that far. It sounds like you should check out directing. You might be able to settle down on set if you knew you were working on setting up your own thing too.”

James
brought his attention back to her, smiling again. “And you know that how?”
“If
this movie were my only design outlet, I’d be going crazy too. But I’ve got my
own designs at home, my own plans.” She touched her chest over her heart.
“That’s what belongs to me. This other thing is a job. It’s not who I am.”
He
considered her. “Every movie I’m in is who I am. That’s why I’m so uncertain
about being here. When people watch Laser Sentinel they’re not going to see my
character. They’re going to walk out of the theater and talk about what James
did. I’ve heard them. I don’t want them to see me look stupid and think…”
“That
you are stupid,” Kahala finished softly.
He
glanced up quickly, his face so naked and vulnerable that it hurt to look at
him. Then the moment passed and he put his movie star smile on again.
“Considering how many times I’ve complained about actresses being insecure, I
should know better than to talk like this.”
“If
you do something you care about it’s hard not to worry about how it will be
received,” Kahala said.
