Fun facts about Under a Texas Star by Lisa Mondello

1.      The hero in Under a Texas Star is modeled after my husband Tom who was a marine.  Some of the stories Tom shares with Brian are real stories from my husband’s time in the marines.  While this is truly a work of fiction, there is a lot of my husband and my husband’s family in the story.

2.      In the story, Tom talks about his grandparents, Oma and Opa, and remembers stories of past in Germany and coming to America.  Those stories came directly from my mother-in-law, Opa to our children.  My in-laws came over to America in the early 50s after surviving WWII as children.  I have always wanted to write the story of their survival as a family history so that my children would understand what it took for them to come to America.  So many people take freedom for granted.  I know I did as a child until I listened to my mother-in-law tell her childhood stories.

3.      Under a Texas Star was originally published by Harlequin Love Inspired as a Christian romance named Fresh-Start Family, originally set in Nebraska.  I always loved that cover, but hated the title.  It reminded me of kitty litter.  So for years I called this my kitty litter book even though I have always loved this story.  I revised the book to be a secular book without the Christian element, changed the title to Under a Texas Star and moved Jenna and Tag to Texas so they were part of my Texas Hearts series.  It gave me the opportunity to revisit some old friends in some of the revised scenes.  Readers get a chance to see what is happening with Mitch and Sarah of His Heart for the Trusting, and Mandy and Beau from Her Heart for the Asking.

4.      The idea to give Brian, a small child, a fatal kidney disease was a tough one on many levels.  As a mother, I hate seeing sick children.  As a writer, I know nothing pushes those emotion buttons faster than making your characters suffer.  So I chose to make them suffer.  But I have always loved the happy endings of romance, which is why I write romance and not mainstream fiction that sometimes makes you feel like crap when you get the last page.  So rest assured, not only with Jenna and Tag get their happily ever after, but Brian will have a happy ending as well.

5.      I have never played barrowball before.  I want to because it sounds like a lot of fun.  But I haven’t done it.  This will make sense after you read the book. <g>

Reaching back and securing his hands at the nape of his neck, he watched as the millions of stars that had dotted the blue-black sky just a half hour ago blinked out one by one in the morning light.

He didn’t want to be alone for this moment, but it was more than that.

He wanted to be with Jenna. Climbing into his truck, he headed over to the Jenna’s. There was a light on downstairs in the den, which Tag hoped meant someone was awake at the Atkins farm. Jenna had said that she had a lot of sewing to catch up on. Maybe she’d gotten up early to get started before Brian woke up. With any luck, she’d be awake.

Anticipation rolled through him. Within seconds Jenna came bursting out of the front door onto the porch. Despite the porch’s shadows, he could see from the light filtering out from the den window that it was her. A smile immediately hit his face, but then he saw the panic in her eyes when she came down the porch steps.

His stomach clenched as the quiet peace he’d been feeling during the drive over shifted into concern. Had something happened? Was that really why she was up so early?
