From USA Today Bestselling Author
Bronwen Evans
A Thirst for Revenge Challenges a Need for Love
Addicted to the Duke
Bronwen Evans
Series: Imperfect Lords Book 1
Genre: Regency Historical Romance, Victorian Romance
Publisher: Random House Loveswept
Publication Date: June 13, 2017
A lovestruck lady charms the duke of her dreams during an expedition on the high seas in this sexy, swashbuckling novel from USA Today bestselling author Bronwen Evans.
Alexander Sylvester Bracken, Duke of Bedford, has a mission: sail to the Mediterranean and track down Lady Hestia Cary’s missing father. It is a straightforward task, but for two rather vexing complications. First, the sea holds painful memories; second, for her own safety, Hestia is to accompany him. As Alex battles the demons of his past, he must also resist Hestia’s surprisingly skillful attempts at seduction. After all, Alex has sworn to leave her untouched, and he intends to honor that vow—until he can properly ask the Earl’s blessing.
Ever since His Grace rescued Hestia from the arms of a Turkish pirate six long years ago, her heart has belonged to Alex. So when he agrees to help find her father, Hestia is thrilled. Although Alex tries to hide it, there’s passion in his eyes—and a frisson of desire in the air—whenever they meet. On board ship, miles from home, Alex won’t be able to deny her any longer. But with scoundrels lying in wait, she may not live to tell the tale of her conquest.

Interview with author Bronwen Evans

Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Bronwen Evans: Hi everyone, waving from a wintery New Zealand. I’m a USA Today bestselling romance writer (you know that already) who lives at the bottom of the world and loves being part of the huge, friendly romance community.

I live in a wine-growing region of NZ with my two little dogs, Brandy and Duke.  They are Cavoodles, part Poodle and part Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

I share a house with my twin sister, Leigh. She is my harshest critic, and really helps me with my books.

I’m also currently President of Romance Writers of New Zealand, so life is pretty busy at the moment.

I’m a reader of all genres of romance and write contemporary and historical romances.

What do you do when you are not writing?

Bronwen Evans: I am Executive Director of a surgical association that oversees the training of general surgeons in NZ, and I work with the Government on health initiatives. We have free public health care in NZ and I love helping to ensure that continues. I work 2.5 days for them and I love it.

I also enjoy playing bridge and walking my dogs. AND of course reading.

Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

Bronwen Evans: I am plotter. I use Michael Hauge’s Six Act Story Structure, it never lets me down.

Is there an author or book that influenced you or your writing in any way growing up or as an adult?

Bronwen Evans: I don’t think it was ever just one author or book. I love Judith McNaught, Sarah Donati, Stephanie Laurens, Penny Jordan.

How do you market your book(s)?

Bronwen Evans: That’s a tough one. My publisher of course uses their large database of readers to email new releases to. But mostly I rely on writing a good book and hoping readers’ find it, from my social media, blog sites, or word of mouth. I think writing the next good book helps a lot, especially if you write a series. This is book one in a new series for me, Imperfect Lords, and it doesn’t mean readers from my successful Disgraced Lords will simply follow across to my new series. I have to start again and hope they love this group of characters just as much.

Can you tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published?

Bronwen Evans: Oh dear, this is not that much of a story. Invitation To Ruin was my first book published and the first book I ever finished writing – I had many half written books but something about this book made me finished it. I finaled in some contests with it and one judge said, ‘my editor would love this’ so I sent it to her and yip, Kensington Publishing bought it. It was an RT Book Reviews Best First Historical finalist and it won the RomCon Historical Readers Crown.

I know authors get asked this a lot but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?

Bronwen Evans: It’s a tough business with a lot of luck in it. Being in the right place at the right time has helped many of us. There is no doubt that it’s difficult for new authors to build readers at the moment as the market is so very crowded—over 90,000 books a month are published on Amazon. I guess I have to say it starts with writing the best book you can write. And then don’t expect things to happen overnight. The more books you have published the higher the chance of a reader finding you. It’s like any business, you need to build your brand, find readers and write more books to sell.

When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?

Bronwen Evans: Great question. I left it late to get into writing even though I have stories galore in my head, because I’m slightly dyslexic. I never thought I could become a published writer. My current publisher, Random House NY, is very patient with me. I used to have to get my books edited before I could submit them to publishers, but Random understands my situation and works with me. I’m so grateful to them.

I took the plunge to learn how to craft stories because I had a friend, a very good friend, called Jock who was very ill and he made me promise that I would try to follow my dreams. The year he died I joined RWNZ and decided to learn my craft. That was in 2006 and in 2009 my book sold. I dedicated my first book to him.

Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your book?

Bronwen Evans: My hero, Alex is a man filled with self-loathing due to things in his past and he’s consumed with seeking his revenge, because he thinks killing his captor will heal him.

Alex many years ago rescued my heroine, Hestia, and she falls in love with Alex thinking he’s her hero.

Five years later when Hestia’s father goes missing she turns to her hero for help, and together they set out to find her father.

On their journey Hestia learns that Alex is just a man, not a hero on a pedestal, and she realizes infatuation is not love. Can she love this wounded but honorable man? While Alex learns that revenge does not heal, only love can heal, if he can let Hestia in and deem himself worthy of love.

Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Bronwen Evans: Characters, always characters. Usually the hero but I have a new series developing, which is heroine centric, and my agent loves it!

What was the inspiration for this novel?

Bronwen Evans: A movie called High Road To China. An old Tom Selleck movie which I loved!

Can we expect more novels from you in 2017?

Bronwen Evans: Yes! I have A Love To Remember book #7 in my Disgraced Lords series coming out in August. I have Want Me, book #3 and Need Me, book #4 in my contemporary Coopers Creek series out in October, and contemporary Reckless Curves, book #1 in my Drive Me Wild series in November. I’m also in a Scottish Historical Christmas Anthology coming out in December with A Scot for Christmas.

Are you reading anything interesting at the moment? If so, what is it?

Bronwen Evans: I’ve just finished reading Under The Stars by a newly published contemporary romance author (it’s her first book) from NZ called Kendra Delugar. It’s a story about a dyslexic fire fighter, Gabe who starts a love affair with the town’s school teacher, Sophie, who happens to be a genius. I really loved the book and see big things ahead for her. She’s a fabulous storyteller and her character development is second to none.

What is your favorite part of writing?

Bronwen Evans: I love meeting the characters. I love finding them their perfect other half and then making it difficult for them to fall in love. Plotting out their journey to their happy ever after is very rewarding.

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?

Bronwen Evans: Be fearless in your pursuit of what sets your soul on fire. It’s not known who came up with this quote but I love it because I’ve always been ready to follow my dreams and give something a go but when I do I throw myself into it, I don’t do it half heartedly.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Bronwen Evans: Just to say a friendly hello and that I love talking (as I’m in NZ talking is usually virtual on social media or via email) with lovers of romance books. I really love my tag line and it sums up what I look for in a book. Read. Feel. Fall in Love.

Random Quickies!

Pepsi or coke? Bronwen Evans: Neither

Favorite kind of chocolate? Bronwen Evans: Whittakers – NZ chocolate company who make the best chocolate ever. Hokey Pokey is my favorite

Cats or dogs? Bronwen Evans: Dogs

Do you read more than you write? Bronwen Evans: Yes

Favorite movie? Bronwen Evans: Love Actually

Favorite book to movie? Bronwen Evans: The English Patient

Favorite book or author? Bronwen Evans: Yeah we know it can be hard to choose! ;) Gaelen Foley – her Knight’s Brother’s series

Hardback/Paperback or eReader? Bronwen Evans: eReader

Why do you like eReaders more? Bronwen Evans: I’m long sighted and can’t read small print. In addition, convenience. I’m never without a book as I can download one on my phone, ipad, or kindle etc

Why do you like hardcover/paperback more?  Bronwen Evans: paperback

Favorite color? Bronwen Evans: pink

How many paperback/hardcover books do you own? Bronwen Evans: Hundreds but I’m culling them down and now have hundreds on my Kindle.

Right now in your line of site, how many books can you see? Bronwen Evans: 10

Do you own a laptop or desktop computer? Bronwen Evans: Both

If a laptop, what kind do you own and would you recommend it to other authors? Bronwen Evans: I love my Mac Book, it’s just as light as the Mac Air but has a bigger memory

Addicted to the Duke Teaser
What book are you reading today? Bronwen Evans: The Reluctant Duchess by Sharon Cullen, I’ve not read it before.

Have you ever been out of the state where you live? Bronwen Evans: I live in New Zealand but I also lived in England for 8 years and I’ve traveled pretty extensively. I’d say I’ve visited every continent. I also go to the USA regularly and my father lives in Canada. Kiwi’s (name for NZer’s) travel a lot because we are so isolated from the world, which sometimes can be a good thing.
