Interview & #Giveaway:The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting by Deborah Wilde @wildeauthor

Thank you so much for being here with us today Deborah Wilde!! Don't forget to check out an excerpt below, and a giveaway!

Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a former screenwriter, reader girl, and avid traveler who now writes sexy, funny urban fantasy romance. Think Bridesmaids meets Buffy with a dash of the seven deadly sins.

Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

I outline like crazy and then there’s a point at which I’ll deviate from it. I also tend to rewrite my first acts a lot to get the rhythm of the characters’ voices. So even though I’m diving into my fourth book with these characters, I still need to feel my way inside them.

Is there an author or book that influenced you or your writing in any way growing up or as an adult?

The book that had the most profound influence on me was The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I found it when I was nine years old, this book sitting a shelf with “Don’t Panic” written on the cover. When I took it home, it blew my mind. It was funny and surreal and I’d never read anything like it. I tell everyone that it was my Star Wars.

Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your book?

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter books center on Nava Katz. She’s kind of floundering in life. Her twin brother has been training his whole life for the day he joins the chosen demon hunters, while her dance dreams went up in smoke. When we first meet Nava, she’s doing the walk of shame up her parents’ front walk, where half-drunk, she crashes her brother’s induction ceremony, only to discover the secret society of hunters have been training the wrong twin all these years.

Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Sort of both. When I created Nava, I really wanted to play with what being an “unlikeable” female meant because I believe that even fictional women are held to a different standard than fictional men, especially around sexuality. And I also brought a lot of my issues around the sexism inherent in the Jewish religion (mine) to it. Nava and her story are very personal to me in different ways. But with this idea came the image of her doing her walk of shame and the disaster of the ceremony where she learns she has this huge destiny and doesn’t want it.

Where can we purchase this book?
Barnes and Noble:

Can we expect more novels from you in 2017?

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter came out in April, The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting releases June 26, and The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Need is up for pre-order. It will be available on August 18. Then I really need to focus on the final 3 books in the series.

Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

I actually started in another genre. I also write YA romantic comedies under the name Tellulah Darling.

How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?

Nava is me when I turn off my edit button. She’s snarky, self-defensive, and has carefully cultivated her hot mess status. This is a girl seriously in denial about the emotional baggage she’s carrying around from a couple of major life upsets. We share a love of tap dancing, smexy men, and craving our own happily-ever-after, which I have. Yay! (Buried under layers and layers of sarcasm.)

Number of pages: 420

Book Description:

50% boobs. 50% sarcasm. 100% new breed of hunter.

After a bumpy start as the only female demon hunter in the top secret Brotherhood of David, Nava Katz heads to Prague for her first undercover mission: unmasking a demon movie star. She'd be all kinds of thrilled if it weren't for the fact that her fellow hunter-with-benefits, Rohan Mitra, has reclaimed his rock star status and assigned Nava the role of groupie.

Rejecting her "be a good girl and follow orders" directive, Nava unleashes an alter ego guaranteed to hook their celebrity target and drive Rohan crazy. No downside-until she finds herself up against Rohan's past, the Brotherhood's antiquated thinking, and her own identity issues, turning her personal life into a bomb that could blow up the entire operation.

Sparkly and deadly; it's a plan.

Rohan’s arm shot out to the wall, blocking me. The two of us faced in different directions. How apt.
“Move,” I said
He didn’t budge.
I stared resolutely ahead.
Finally he dropped his arm.
I pulled my keycard from my coat, walking directly to my room. No passing go. No collecting $200.
“Don’t leave.” He spoke quietly but in the silence of the corridor, I had no trouble hearing him.
My hands balled up. Hadn’t it been enough for one night? That thread between us that had felt so comforting earlier threatened to strangle me now. Anger fueled my turn. I would have welcomed a corresponding anger in him, but the naked longing on his face and the defeat in the slope of his shoulders undid me. That and his sincere, “I love watching you dance.”
The hallway was empty but it suddenly felt hard to breathe.
He held out a hand.
I leaned back. The magnetic push/pull between us demanded a certain distance, a certain resistance, as much as attraction. Wrung out on every level, I couldn’t afford to let Mr. Force-of-Nature Mitra take advantage of my weakened boundaries to redefine our hook-ups into whatever vision he had of them.
The air conditioning kicked in and I wrapped my arms around myself.
“When you see my shower, you’ll thank me.” He scrunched up his face, a lock of hair falling boyishly over his eyes. “Nothing happens. Just sleep.”

I wasn’t sure if that sweetened the offer or not, but I nodded.

About the Author:

A global wanderer, hopeless romantic, and total cynic with a broken edit button, Deborah writes urban fantasy to satisfy her love of smexy romances and tales of chicks who kick ass. She is all about the happily-ever-after, with a huge dose of hilarity along the way. “It takes a bad girl to fight evil. Go Wilde.”
