Guest Post & #Giveaway: Rum Runner by Tricia Leedom

Rum Runner, book one of The Key West Escape Series, is a funny, sexy, action-packed tale about an uptight British Socialite who travels to Key West, Florida to find her biological father, a treasure hunter, and inadvertently steps into the crosshairs of his enemies. She turns to an irreverent ex-Navy SEAL for help, but he’s got a shady past and his own agenda. Together, they set off on a dangerous Caribbean adventure.

While researching and writing Rum Runner, I traveled to Key West a couple of times for inspiration and ideas, and to work out the details so a reader who knew the island wouldn’t be thrown by a glaringly incorrect detail. Now, in some cases, I used creative license because I had to, but I tried to make the changes either based on real places or something that would fit into the setting without raising an eyebrow. The Key West in my novel is a fictional world in a real place. All of the other islands the characters visit in the book are as well.

I used YouTube to help research the places I’ve never been to myself. Like Saba, for example. A beautiful little Caribbean island mostly untouched by tourism, it’s situated about halfway between Saint Martin and Saint Kitts. I discovered the island in my research, and then used YouTube to take a tour. Videos not only offer stunning visual details to work with, but they often give you a sense of the people and a general feel for the place. I try to convey those types of things in my novels. I also used YouTube to see what it was like to fly in the cockpit of a float plane, and I watched videos on special ops training. It really is an invaluable tool for writers.

Living in Southwest Florida, I’m fortunate to have friends and acquaintances around me who are native to the Caribbean islands. I enjoyed picking their brains for details I could work into the story. Sometimes I asked about the political climate of a particular island or just about daily life. I learned so much from chatting with people.

The heroine in Rum Runner is British, and while I’ve visited the UK several times, and I’ve been an anglophile for as long as I can remember, I’m no expert on British dialects. I really didn’t want to overdo the heroine’s Britishness or use so much slang the American reader would be distracted or confused by it. So, I focused more on phrasing and threw in the occasional expression or term just to remind the reader of the character’s accent. Late in the process of editing, it occurred to me to reach out to friends who live in the UK and ask for help with some of the questions I had. They directed me to a woman named Jeni Hackett, who I met on a previous visit to the UK when we were both attending an Outlander fan gathering hosted by the Facebook group Outlandish UK. (I’m a huge Outlander fan from way back.) Jeni was great. She was always available to answer a random question or offer suggestions. My only regret is that I didn’t connect with her sooner.

Currently, I’m hard at work writing and researching the second book in The Key West Escape Series called Bahama Mama. I was back on YouTube just the other day researching sharks this time. There I was sipping a cup of coffee while watching a feeding frenzy, and I thought to myself: I sure have an interesting job. Lately, I’ve been thinking I may have to take a trip to the Bahamas, you know, in the name of research. ;)

Thank you so much for being here with us at Full Moon Bites today Tricia Leedom!! :)

Perfect for fans of Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Janet Evanovich, this action-packed debut from a fresh voice in contemporary romance offers a sexy and comedic take on love, adventure, and what it means to trust your heart.
English socialite Sophie Davies-Stone has been longing to meet her father since she was a little girl. When he sends her a mysterious medallion and asks her to forward it to him in Miami, she can’t help herself from doing something totally un-Sophie-like. Rather than mailing it as instructed, Sophie hops on a flight to Florida.
But the family reunion never happens. Instead, Sophie is attacked and almost kidnapped by her father’s enemies. Her savior is Jimmy Panama, a cocky and annoyingly handsome former Navy SEAL. Sophie isn’t the only one who’s annoyed. After years of trying to find a way to pay back his CO, Jimmy never thought his debt would get him mixed up with his commander’s uptight, British daughter. He just wants to put her on the next flight home and get back to his low-stress life in Key West, but fate has other plans.
As Sophie and Jimmy embark on a heart-pounding adventure through Key West and the Caribbean, Sophie finds herself falling for the snarky American. Still, her head says Jimmy is all wrong for her, and the more she finds out about him – and her father – the more uncertain she is about who she can trust.
One thing is clear. Sophie is in way over her head, and her greatest adventure might be her last.
