Interview & #Giveaway: Dream Me by Kathryn Berla @BerlaKathryn

Hello Everyone! Please help me give a warm welcome to Kathryn Berla, author of young-adult novel Dream Me!

Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself? :)

Kathryn Berla: My young adult novel, DREAM ME, released July 11 so I’m very excited to finally see the book on the shelves of many bookstores (Barnes & Noble included) as well as for sale online through Amazon and others. I have two more upcoming young adult novels which are being published by Amberjack Publishing. THE HOUSE AT 758 comes out this October and GOING PLACES in March of 2018. My young adult romance, 12 HOURS IN PARADISE, was released last year.

Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?

Kathryn Berla: I don’t outline but I generally have the book already formulated in my mind before I start writing. I also make copious background notes.

Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your book?

Kathryn Berla: I like to take on a challenge when I write a book and when I wrote DREAM ME my challenge was to write a book that fused contemporary romance/friendship with sci-fi fantasy. But I hesitate to call it sci-fi because the time travel aspect is more an allegory of a contemporary issue—the plight of a refugee who is alone in a strange world. DREAM ME is the story of a girl who moves from everything familiar in California to the southern part of the United States. Zat is a boy from the future whose very life depends on leaving everything familiar and relocating to a new place (in his case, traveling back in time). Whether or not I succeeded in the challenge of fusing these genres is up to the individual reader to decide but I can tell you I had a great time writing it and I put a lot of myself in this book.

Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?

Kathryn Berla: In a sense, the characters were always with me just waiting for a plot. So I suppose the characters came first.

What was the inspiration for this novel?

Kathryn Berla: The concept of Zat and his situation came to me in a dream. This is what gives the book a surreal, dreamlike quality. The contemporary story was based on my own experiences.

Where can we purchase this book?

Kathryn Berla: Everywhere!

Can we expect more novels from you in 2017?

Kathryn Berla: Yes! THE HOUSE AT 758 will be released October 17 this year.

Are you working on anything at the moment?

Kathryn Berla: Yes, it’s percolating in my mind. I haven’t written anything yet but the entire story is just waiting to be fleshed out on paper.

Do you think you may ever go into another genre?

Kathryn Berla: Yes. My first adult novel (women’s fiction) will be published August 2018. It’s called THE KITTY COMMITTEE. I’m VERY excited about it.

How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?

Kathryn Berla: You can only write about what you know, so if you don’t know someone with personality traits shared by your character you have to do research or be an extremely perceptive person. I think I’m a perceptive person but I had to do a great deal of research to come up with one of the main characters in THE KITTY COMMITTEE who has sociopathic tendencies.

Why this genre(s)?

Kathryn Berla: I originally started writing young adult because I realized that no matter how old a person gets, the years they will remember most vividly are their high school years. It’s the time we come into our own as full-fledged people independent from our parents and yet we haven’t completely cut our ties with home. We’re very dependent on our peers at that age.

Where do you see yourself at in five years—writing wise?

Kathryn Berla: Taking chances and writing whatever I feel might challenge me to grow without worrying about how it might or might not be received. At least I hope so. And, obviously, I hope it will be received well čśë

Can you tell us a few do’s and don’ts for aspiring authors?

Kathryn Berla: Don’t try to write for the market. Don’t try to be the next [insert current popular genre or book]. Be creative and forge your own path for others to follow. Or not. But at least do what is interesting to you. It will show if you’re just trying to follow a trend.

Is there a genre that you love to read, and would like to write, but just cannot?

Kathryn Berla: Absolutely. Historical fiction.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?

Kathryn Berla: I would like to thank my readers for taking hours out of their lives to spend with my story. Whether or not you like my book(s) I genuinely appreciate the time you have invested. So, all I can say is one big THANK YOU. I really wish that all readers could understand how important they are to authors and how much we appreciate them. I also love to hear from my readers on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. I check all of them frequently.

Random Quickies!

Kathryn Berla: Coke, of course.

Favorite kind of chocolate?
Kathryn Berla: Dark.

Cats or dogs?
Kathryn Berla: Dogs (sorry cat people, I do like the idea of cats)

Do you read more than you write?
Kathryn Berla: Yes, I read more than I write

Favorite movie?
Kathryn Berla: The Apu Trilogy (which is actually three movies)

Favorite book or author? Yeah we know it can be hard to choose! ;)
Kathryn Berla: Favorite book is “Earth Abides”. Favorite author is Margaret Atwood.

Hardback/Paperback or eReader?
Kathryn Berla: I’d be lost without my kindle.

Why do you like eReaders more?
Kathryn Berla: Because I can lie in bed late at night on my side with no light and hold the book while turning pages with just one finger.

Favorite color?
Kathryn Berla: Pink because it makes me happy

How many paperback/hardcover books do you own?
Kathryn Berla: Hardly any. I gave away all my hard copies and only read on my kindle now.

Do you own a laptop or desktop computer?
Kathryn Berla: Laptop

If a laptop, what kind do you own and would you recommend it to other authors?
Kathryn Berla: I love my Macbook Air.

What book are you reading today?
Kathryn Berla: “Second Acts” by Teri Emory (ARC)

Have you ever been out of the state where you live?
Kathryn Berla: Yes. Many times.

Genres: Romance, Time-Travel, Young Adult

Zat is a dreamer from the distant future—a time when humans no longer dream and Earth is a desolate wasteland. He dreams of the beautiful Earth of the past, and a fiery-haired beauty named Babe. Against the wisdom of his peers, Zat decides to risk everything to travel back in time and live in Babe’s dreams…
Babe is the perpetual new girl in town. Her father’s job frequently moves the family around the country, and Babe just longs for a place to call home. As she settles into the sleepy town of Sugar Dunes, Florida, Babe begins to have strange dreams of a green-eyed boy named Zat. Night after night, Babe shows Zat her world. But the dreams come at the cost of nearly crippling migraines every morning. Babe’s life outside of her dreams pales in comparison to her growing love for Zat and their time spent together.
But the more time Babe and Zat spend together in her dreams, the more Babe’s pain increases, and Zat begins to question the reality of his existence. How can he live a life with Babe, when all they have is her dreams?
Can a dream become a reality?
