Interview & #Giveaway: OUT OF SIGHT by Melissa Klein @klein_klein344

From Award Winning Author
Melissa Klein
When tragedy upends her life, Mia Jones must fight to regain her lost memories and win the man she loves.
Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a former teacher and social worker. I’m married, and my husband and I have two grown children and two grandchildren. The little boys speak primarily German, and for some reason instead of Oma or Grandma, they call me Hund—that’s German for dog. Could that come from my collie mix, Mackenzie or the fact I get on the floor and play dog with them?

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?
Out of Sight was born from a very scary and painful period in my family’s life. Mia and her traumatic brain injury mirrors my daughter and an accident she suffered. My wish is for this book to make you laugh, cry, and believe if these two can have their Happily Ever After, you can too.

What do you do when you are not writing?
When I’m not writing, I enjoy gardening, redecorating my new home outside Atlanta, or visiting my daughter. I also love spending time with my grandsons.

Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?
I definitely fall into the plotter category. Both my husband and son are certified project managers, so some of their work has rubbed off on me. In fact, my life is governed by lists, post-it notes, and calendars. Before beginning each book, I do a great deal of pre-writing. I devote a notebook to each manuscript, and in it I create character sketches, maps of the town, family trees, as well as a detailed outline.

I know authors get asked this a lot but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?
My advice to aspiring writers is to write, write, write. When you’re not doing that, read. I learned so much about deep POV, dialogue, and pacing from reading J. R. Ward. Also, you should join professional groups, attend conferences, get a critique partner—anything to improve your craft and put you in touch with current trends in writing.

Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your book?
Having grown up together in the same rotten foster home, Mia and Hank have always seen each other as family. That is until Mia’s attack and Hank ditches his plane in the sea. Along with a traumatic brain injury and the memory loss that comes with it, it falls on Mia to discover the identity of her attackers—all while dealing with her new found feelings for Hank. He too sees Mia in a different light, but with his own medical diagnosis, he believes holding on to her is the height of selfishness. As the bad guys close in, Hank almost discovers too late that it doesn’t take a physically whole man to love a woman wholly.

What was the inspiration for this novel?
My daughter, Laura, is the inspiration for Mia. She suffered a traumatic brain injury 3 years ago due to a skiing accident. Her injuries and memory loss are similar to Mia’s. Despite doctors’ initial diagnosis, Laura made a full recovery and went on to graduate from Boston School of Medicine this year. (Yes, I’m a proud mom.) Laura showed the same tenacity as Mia, and I was pleased to dedicate Out of Sight to her and the hospital that play such an important part in her recovery.

Where can we purchase this book?

Can we expect more novels from you in 2017?
The next installment in the Out of Uniform series comes out August 16, 2017. Out of Time is on Amazon pre-order.

Are you working on anything at the moment?
I’ve just finished my contribution to
an anthology called Love Around the Table. It will release in November and all proceeds with benefit Ronald McDonald House charities. I’m also working on the third book in the Magnolia Springs series. Someone She Once Knew should come out late 2018 with The Wild Rose Press.

Can you tell us a little about your first publishing experience?
Despite my first book, A Risk Worth Taking winning several awards, it was rejected multiple times. The age of my characters played a part in that rejection in an industry that wants heroes and heroines to be at most in their mid-thirties. The Wild Rose Press not only accepted more mature characters, they had a line devoted to lovers over 40. Once I signed a contract, my editor took time to not only edit the story, but to show me how to make future books better. Everyone with TWRP has been very supportive to my writing career. I’m so glad I found them.

How much of you or people you know do you think make it into the characters in your novel(s)?
That’s a tricky question, especially when my extended family accuses me of writing about them or airing family secrets in public. The only person I will admit inspired a character is my daughter, Laura. All others are a combination of people I’ve met or a product of my imagination. Although, my husband does claim to be the model for all my alpha-males.

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?
Lewis Carroll said, “In the end… We only regret the chances we didn’t take, the relationships we were afraid to have, and the decisions we waited too long to make.” I love this quote because it reminds me to live boldly.
Do you have any upcoming appearances that you would like to share with us?
I will be participating in Escape Into Books on August 5, 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s a casual time for readers and authors to spend time together. Dianna Love, Mary Buckham, Linda Joyce, Rachel Jones, Marilyn Baron, and many other well-known authors will be there as well. Here’s a link to the event.

Random Quickies!

Pepsi or coke?  I’m from Atlanta, so Coke, of course.

Cats or dogs? Both and any other animal I can convince my husband to let me have. My first professional ambition was to be a large animal vet.

Favorite book to movie? My favorite book is Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. I read it every year to my students.

Favorite book or author? Yeah we know it can be hard to choose! ;) Hands down, my favorite author is J. R. Ward.

Hardback/Paperback or eReader? eReader for instant gratification and hardback/paperback for keepers.

Do you own a laptop or desktop computer? I use a HP laptop. I don’t have a specific office or writing space. Some days I want to write in my sunroom, others I write in bed. I’ve love scenes on airplanes and dark moments in doctor’s waiting rooms. I can only do that if I have a laptop.

Have you ever been out of the state where you live? My husband works for one of the major air carriers, so we’ve been able to travel extensively. I’ve been to 41 states and 10 foreign countries. Hawaii is next on our list.
