Interview with Angelina Kerner, author of Deity's Soulmate @kernerangelina

Please help me welcome author Angelina Kerner to Full Moon Bites for an interview! Read on below for info about her novel, Deity's Soulmate!

Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Angelina Kerner: I’m a wife, a mother, an aunt, an anthropologist, and a writer. I grew up with one sister in Novosibirsk, Russia. I have also lived in Kaluga, Russia, and in several California cities. I have taken road trips through the states by car and train and met a lot of interesting people! One state I would most like to visit would be Illinois.

I have one son and my book is dedicated to him. ^_^ He’s the joy of my life and about 4 months old so I’m a new mom...and exhausted, but loving it!

I don’t have a degree in writing but had heard in high school that, at the rate I was learning English, I would never be a writer so I soon set myself a goal to become one. Here I am. What’s great about our opportunities is that we can take them! We don’t have to wait for publishing houses or pay lots of money to share our stories. We can share them through blogs, writing communities, and through self-publishing companies. I’m happy that I took my opportunity to share my stories that were hidden inside my mind for way too long.

It’s harder to find time for my writing since I now work and take care of my son, but I move slowly forward with my next work-in-progress. When I’m not writing, I enjoy dancing (ballroom and belly dancing), needlework, playing with my son, and spending time with my family.

Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?
Angelina Kerner: I often just start writing. It helps me get the idea out and the premise of each story. Then, I create a file where I break down: list of characters, characteristics of characters, locations, language (if it’s important), quotes, and anything else that would help me. If a story turns out to be really difficult, I add chapter summaries to remember what happens when...but I really should be doing that either way! For my next novel, I’m adding character sketches. ^_^

Is there an author or book that influenced you or your writing in any way growing up or as an adult?
Angelina Kerner: Almost everything I read, but I was most influenced by James Clemens. He wrote the The Banned and the Banished series about a young girl, her magick, and a journey. He was amazing! I remember buying his first novel in passing from a bookstore. It was one of those businesses that would rent a place for a while and then disappear. It was only $5 and I didn’t read it right away, but when I did I was hooked. I went to Barnes and Noble and bought all of his book in that series.

It was the first time I got the full feeling I’d been transported to a fantasy realm and of wanting to reread a series. Until the very end, I was enraptured by everything about it! Someone should really adapt that series into a tv show or several movies.

I want to be able to transport my readers into my worlds as well.

I know authors get asked this a lot, but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?
Angelina Kerner: Have the right attitude. A boring advice? Maybe. It’s the best one I that I got to share.

Here’s an experience from being part of a writing community. A writer got discouraged with own writing after seeing the writings of others. He stopped sharing his work, communicated less and less, and later wondered how he got into his situation. His attitude made him lose his own voice. His despair and jealousy closed many doors for him. And when the community was shutting down, he shared his feelings. It made me sad to read his goodbye. If only he had the right attitude and was happy for other writers then he would probably not have lost his voice and were able to write many more amazing works.

Have the right attitude. There’s no hand holding when it comes to being a writer. You have to work hard, whether you’re a published author or a writer in a writing community. If someone receives more feedback or more reviews, it’s because they have worked hard to get those. Getting more feedback or reviews shouldn’t be your goal. The goal should be to get your story out there and to have the right attitude.

Good luck!

Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your book?
Angelina Kerner: Deity’s Soulmate is a story of Gardenia, an 18-year-old goddess-in-training. After witnessing the savage side of human nature, she goes and does something stupid that gets her punished by Zeus. Her punishment is to learn about 13 days of creation from 13 different teachers. But she’s allowed her choice of teachers she goes with Zeus’s nemeses, the dragons. Along the way, she learns what it takes to create life, to love, and that the truth is far more complicated than she imagined.

I won’t say anymore for fear of spoiling the plot.

Where can we purchase this book?
Angelina Kerner: It can be purchased in many places. I’ve included some links to buy:

Barnes & Noble – Deity’s Soulmate: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/deitys-soulmate-angelina-kerner/1126235658?ean=9781545109519

Amazon – Deity’s Soulmate: http://a.co/0Bjb9bM

Kobo – Deity’s Soulmate https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/deity-s-soulmate

Can we expect more novels from you in 2017?
Angelina Kerner: A sister chapter to Deity’s Soulmate - Into the Flames, may be released in the winter of 2017 if everything stays on track.

Are you working on anything at the moment?

Angelina Kerner: Yes, on Into the Flames. It’s a fantasy novel about a 22 year-old girl and the world of phoenixes.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?
Angelina Kerner: Thank you! Having readers read and enjoy my work is the best. Seeing those reviews makes my heart flutter and puts a smile on my face even if I’ve had a hard day. Before I had a book published, I was part of a writing community where I learned the importance of readers, fellow writers, beta readers, and friends. That’s where I learned that all of us have potential and that a lot of us are trying our best reach it. When readers tell me that they can’t wait to read the next book in the series, it drives me forward. It makes me want to continue writing about my favorite characters and not stop. Having readers enjoy my writing is one of the best feelings in the world for me. I want to reach their hearts and make them want to tell their hidden stories as well.

From author Angelina Kerner (Seven Hours: Challenge Accepted) comes an all-new fantasy series about Gardenia, a daughter of Athena, and her 100 years of coursework on how to create whole new worlds and subjects of her own.

A sheltered schoolchild in a realm of condescending gods and goddesses, Gardenia goes to Earth on a dare to  witness the unsavory side of mankind for herself.  Believing she can do better, she undertakes the formation of an entire galaxy, but without permission from Zeus.

Zeus disciplines her by assigning an epic 13-fold creational lesson destined to take her a century to complete.  But he is taken aback once more when she makes an odd choice.  She vows to fulfill this knowledge quest by tracking down a lost race of dragons, and discovering the secrets they’ve kept since time began.

Searching the universe to meet even one dragon may be a fool’s errand, but that’s the least of her worries.  For ancient wartime resentments linger between the nations of dragons and deities, and some dragons would attack Gardenia on sight!

Yet she ventures out undaunted, learning unexpected things about nomadic life, tender love, and mortal peril along the way.  The biggest surprise of all, though, goes by the name of Ri.  Ri may be the man of her dreams, the voice in her head, the dragon she’s seeking, or all these things and more...
Meanwhile, the Fates brew sordid plans of their own and Hera jealously sets traps and trials for Gardenia at every chance.  What’s a young goddess to do?  Flight or fight?

About the Author

Angelina Kerner, a Pisces, was born during the Chinese astrological year of the Snake, which she absolutely adores. Angelina loves snakes, and was once allowed to feed one a rat. That was an experience of a lifetime.

She moved around during her young years from Novosibirsk to Kaluga in Russia. Finally settling in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, her teenage years were spent dancing in troupes and performing on stage. The dances ranged from waltz to tango, from Jewish to Russian, and finally belly dance. She was accepted into six out of seven universities, and decided to stay close to her family. Angelina pursued a psychology degree until she saw graduates working for Starbucks and then decided to pursue another career path in the department of Social Sciences. The difficult coursework, her job, and finding her life partner inspired her to turn to writing which, at the time, wasn't so much a hobby as a way to escape daily routine.

She worked on countless stories, never really finishing them, but came to understand that flash fiction wasn't for her. After finding an online community where she met her best friend, her writing flourished, making publication a possible next step. She is now the author of one published novel for both young adults and adults, and aspires to publish her other fantasy and crime fiction works soon. Her next project involves a competition for a beautiful phoenix. That novel will, hopefully, make its debut in 2017 or 2018. Angelina currently divides her time between her family, work, writing, and a lot of cats.
