Guest Post & #Giveaway: The Big F by Maggie Ann Martin @maggersann

Read on below for a guest post from Maggie Ann Martin as she tells us about the inspiration for The Big F and it's characters. Also read on below for more info about the novel and a GIVEAWAY!

Many of my ideas while drafting a book start as little seeds that come from real life. Throughout my day, I will observe things around me and constantly ask “What if this happened right now?” Thinking in that mindset help me formulate book or scene ideas later.

The initial idea for The Big F came from when my sister was searching for colleges and went to a “college psychic” to help her find the perfect college for her. It made me think “What would happen if a college psychic’s daughter didn’t get into the school she was destined to go to?” The rest snowballed from there.

Danielle as a character stems a lot from struggles that I was going through as a college student. I wrote The Big F while I was in college, and was feeling anxious about having to make huge, earth-shattering decisions about what I wanted to do with my life without feeling entirely prepared.

I was absolutely obsessed with the MTV show Awkward while I was drafting The Big F and I really tried to model my tone after it. The characters were smart and witty, but still talked like high schoolers (and not like adults trying to use hip lingo to appeal to a younger crowd).

The character Porter draws a lot from the character Jess Mariano from Gilmore Girls. I’ve always been a sucker for the quietly intellectual type, and both Porter and Jess no-doubt fit that bill.

Music-wise, I listened to a lot of Katie Herzig while drafting because her music is light and upbeat and made for a killer writing soundtrack. I like to imagine that her song Way to the Future is The Big F’s theme song.

It’s fun to go back and think about where the idea for a certain scene might have stemmed from, or recall exactly which song I wrote each part to. I hope you can point to a few influences now when you read The Big F!

Danielle effed up. Big time.
Danielle’s plans for the future were pretty easy to figure out… until she failed senior English and her single college application was denied. Suddenly she’s in hot water with very few options, because honestly who applies to a safety school when their mom is a semi-famous “college psychic”?!
Determined to get her life back on track, Danielle enrolls in her hometown community college with a plan: pass her English class and get back into Ohio State and her mother’s good graces. Romance isn’t on her radar… until she reconnects with her childhood crush and golden-boy-next-door, Luke.
Between family drama, first love and finding her own way, Danielle can’t help but feel a little overwhelmed. Thankfully she has her friendship with the snarky and frustratingly attractive Porter, her coworker at the campus bookstore, to push her to experience new things and help keep her afloat.
One thing’s for sure: This time, failure’s not an option.
