Interview: Dirty by R.L. Kenderson @rlkenderson #Giveaway

Hi! Would you tell us a little bit about yourself? J
A.     R.L. is actually for Renae and Lara. We are two best friends who write books together. We met in college and while Renae was always an avid reader, that was where Lara gave Renae her first romance novel. Renae is a part-time sonographer, an almost full-time stay-at-home mom, and a wife. Lara is a pharmacist and a mom. We live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, and in our spare time we write steamy romance novels.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your readers?
    1. Thank you for taking a chance on our books! We wouldn’t be here without you. And to the readers who followed us from the beginning, thank you for sticking around while we were on a two-year hiatus for very personal reasons. Thank you for being patient.

What do you do when you are not writing?
A.     We are both moms and one of us is a wife. We both work in the medical field, one of us full-time, and one of us part-time. We like to read, watch TV, and hang out with each other on our downtime.

Do you write an outline before starting a book or just write?
A.     Sometimes. We find that they don’t really work for us because our stories always take turns we weren’t necessarily expecting. Often, we will write mini outlines toward the end of books just to make sure we know the length and that we don’t forget any important things we want to include.

Is there an author or book that influenced you or your writing in any way growing up or as an adult?
A.     Our paranormal series it multi-point of view. The biggest influences in this were Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooters Series and J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brother Series. We like how you get into other characters’ heads so that when you get to their book you already know them. And we like the steaminess of Linda Howard books.

Your life is an action/suspense novel; your stuck on a ship and it’s about to blow. If it was just you, you would jump overboard and get away fast, but there are a few people that were being held captive on the ship too. What do you do?
A.     Brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm on how I could save them, of course. If I were in an action/suspense novel, I would hopefully have some kind of secret skills or training so I could actually accomplish saving them!

Can you tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published?
A.     We did a lot of query letters and tried to go the traditional publishing route. We received some good advice along the way, but ultimately decided to self-publish, and we are really glad we did. It helped us stay true to our stories.

I know authors get asked this a lot but do you have any advice that you would give to aspiring writers?
A.     Just do it. And remember that you don’t write the finished novel right away. You start writing your story and you may change or add things along the way. That’s how your story develops. Just write. Even if it’s a paragraph a day. That’s a paragraph more than you had the day before.

When did you realize that you would like to write and publish a book?
A.     We’d always kind of talked about writing together, but it really came together when we were on a road trip for an out-of-town wedding. Being stuck in the car for four hours really helps getting the creative juices flowing. We decided then that we were going to go for it.

Can you tell us, in your own words not the book description, a little about your book?
A.     It is a light-hearted, funny, romance. It’s about two people who knew each other in college and meet up again. The hero was a player in college and heroine had always avoided him. Now, ten years later they end up in bed together and end up falling in love.

Which came first for you, the characters or the plot?
A.     The plot

What was the inspiration for this novel?
A.     We really wanted to write a contemporary romance, since all our books before this are paranormal. We wanted to write something fun that readers would enjoy. Then the hero is inspired by Renae’s husband and sons.

Where can we purchase this book?
A.     You can purchase Dirty everywhere. You can find the links on our website.

Can we expect more novels from you in 2017/2018?
A.     Definitely. We released our fourth paranormal romance a month after Dirty. And we are working on a prequel to Dirty about Rachel and Sean.

Do you think you may ever go into another genre?
A.     Haha. No, definitely not. We are hardcore romance readers and therefore hardcore romance writers.

What is the hardest part of writing in your opinion?
A.     Finding the time to do it. Lara works full-time and Renae has three kids. Sometimes there are just not enough hours in a day to get in the writing we want.

He’s a player. She’s too smart to let him in her pants. Until a night of drunken sex has her kicking herself and vowing she’ll never let it happen again. Or will she?

After returning home due to her father’s illness, Elise Phillips reunites with her college friends, including Luke Long. Luke was a player back then, and Elise had always prided herself on not being another notch on his bedpost.

Luke is still gorgeous though, and he knows it. And he checks all her boxes—intelligent and sexy with muscles and a hard body.

Following a night of beer and shots, her resistance runs out, and he finally does check her box. And Elise knows that it can never happen again.

Luke had always thought of Elise as the pretty girl that was friends with his roommate’s girlfriend, but now she’s all grown up. When their night of passion rocks Luke’s world he realizes he must have her again.

The two enter a friends-with-benefits relationship with the agreement that they’re just going to have fun. The only thing is, with mutual friends involved, they have to hide their indiscretion.

But what harm can come from a dirty little secret?

About the Author

R.L. Kenderson is two best friends writing under one name. Renae has always loved reading and in third grade wrote her first poem where she learned she might have a knack for this writing thing. Lara remembers sneaking her grandmother’s Harlequin novels when she was probably too young to be reading them, and since then she knew she wanted to write her own.

When they met in college, they bonded over their love of reading and the TV show Charmed. What really spiced up their friendship was when Lara introduced Renae to romance novels. When they discovered their first vampire romance, they knew there would always be a special place in their hearts for paranormal romance. After being unable to find certain storylines and characteristics they wanted to read about in the hundreds of books they consumed, they decided to write their own.

They both live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where they’re a sonographer/stay-at-home mom/wife and pharmacist/mother by day and a sexy author by night. You can find them at, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, and Goodreads. Or you can email them at They always love hearing from their readers.
